The last class of the day felt long.
Not because anything bad was happening. Everyone was just restless. Chairs scraped across the floor. Someone near the window kept tapping a pencil over and over.
Masaki leaned back in his chair and stretched. “We should do something after school.” Kira turned around in her seat.“That sounds like trouble.” Hiro leaned forward from the desk behind them.“The mall outlet,” he said. Masaki snapped his fingers. “Oh yeah. The outdoor one.”
Kiyuri looked interested right away. “The one with Cookie Palace?” “Exactly,” Hiro said. Masaki grinned. “I’m in.” Kira shrugged. “I could go for cookies.” Kiyuri looked over at Tsukihito. “You coming?”
Tsukihito thought about it for a second, then nodded. “Yeah. Sure.” Masaki clapped her hands once. “Perfect. After school then.” When the final bell rang, the hallway filled with noise. Students packed their bags and rushed out of classrooms. Lockers slammed. Laughter echoed through the hall. Masaki walked backward as they headed for the stairs.“We’re going straight there.”Tsukihito shook his head.“I need to stop by home first.”Hiro nodded. “No problem. We’ll wait in front of Cookie Palace.” Kiyuri smiled.
“Don’t make us wait forever.” “I won’t,” Tsukihito said. They split at the corner near the station. Tsukihito walked toward his apartment alone. The apartment was quiet when he got back. His aunt wasn’t home yet. He set his bag down and sat at the table.
For a while he just sat there doing nothing. Nobody was talking about his parents. No teachers, no relatives, no neighbors. They all looked at him the same way. Like he was supposed to be completely broken. But when Tsukihito thought about it… He didn’t feel much. And that scared him.
His chest tightened. His breathing sped up. “Why don’t I feel worse…?” His hands started shaking. He leaned forward and took a slow breath. Then another. After a minute the feeling passed. The room was quiet again. Tsukihito rubbed his face. “…I don’t feel like myself anymore.”
He stood up, grabbed his jacket, and left the apartment. The outlet mall was busy.People walked between stores carrying shopping bags. Music played softly from speakers above. The smell of food drifted through the open air. Tsukihito passed clothing stores and small cafés.Eventually he spotted a red sign.COOKIE PALACE
His friends were standing out front.
Masaki. Hiro. Kira. Kiyuri.
They were talking and laughing about something. Tsukihito started walking toward them. He was only a few steps away when someone suddenly slammed into him. “Whoa-!” The person hit his shoulder and kept running. Tsukihito lost his balance. He fell backward.
When he hit the ground, something under his shirt slammed hard against the pavement. His pendant. For a moment everything felt strange.A strange feeling rushed through his body. His chest felt lighter. His hair slid across his face.Long. Too long. Tsukihito blinked. He pushed himself up slightly.“Ah-” His voice sounded higher. He froze.Hair fell past his shoulders.Footsteps rushed toward him.Masaki crouched down.“Hey, are you okay?”Kiyuri hurried over too.But when they looked at him, they paused. Hiro blinked. “…Wait.”Kira tilted her head.Masaki helped him sit up.“What’s your name?” Masaki asked.Tsukihito’s mind went completely blank. The first thing that came out was whatever everyone else called him yesterday. “A… Arakuri?”The group looked at each other.Hiro snapped his fingers.“Oh! You’re that new girl people were talking about!” Kiyuri’s eyes lit up. “So you're Arakuri Kisaragi?”Arakuri slowly nodded.Kira smiled.“Well, nice to meet you.”Masaki stood up and offered a hand.“Welcome to the school, Arakuri.”She grabbed his hand without thinking.Masaki pulled her up.Hiro pointed toward the store.“You're Tsukihito’s cousin, right.” said Hiro. "We were waiting for him but I don't think he's showing up."Kiyuri grabbed Arakuri’s wrist.“Hang with us today, come on!”Arakuri looked at all of them. They were smiling.Talking.Acting like she had always been there.Masaki opened the door to Cookie Palace.“Alright,” he said. “Let’s go.”Arakuri followed them inside. Her friends were right there. And none of them realized who she really was.
