Chapter 3:

Character Introduction

World Before The New -- Draft -- Coming Soon

Mara Kade – The Rule Breaker

Age: 20

Role: Scavenger-in-training, enclave troublemaker

Background:
Mara was born underground, in the concrete ribs of the old subway system. She has never seen a clear blue sky, never heard traffic, never stood in the open without a roof over her head. Her earliest memories are of flickering emergency lights, the reek of stale air, and stories told by elders about a world that sounded like fantasy: oceans, forests, cities that glowed at night. Her parents were among the first generation of survivors to settle in the tunnels beneath the city. When Mara was seven, her father went topside with a scavenging team and never came back. The official report said the creatures took him. The unofficial whispers say someone on that team sabotaged the mission and left him as bait. Mara grew up with a constant, gnawing sense that the world above had swallowed her father whole and kept his secrets.

Personality:
Defiant, quick-witted, and stubborn to the point of recklessness. She masks fear with sarcasm and challenges authority to hide how much she actually cares about the people around her. She hates feeling powerless—if a choice is between caution and action, she almost always chooses action.

Motivations:
To uncover the truth about her father’s disappearance and the failed scavenging run.

To see the sky for herself, not as a story, but as something real.

To prove that fear has made the enclave too small, that survival doesn’t have to mean permanent imprisonment underground. Mara is the one who breaks the rule and goes above ground after dark, not just out of teenage rebellion, but because she believes there’s something up there—answers, resources, maybe even a safer place—that the elders are too afraid to look for.

Elias Rourke – The Reluctant Protector

Age: 42

Role: Veteran scavenger, security coordinator for the enclave

Background:
Elias remembers the world before the black rain. He was nineteen when the first storms came, a university engineering student who thought the worst thing he’d face that year was an exam schedule. He watched the hospitals fill, watched his city collapse piece by piece. He survived the first creature attack in his apartment block, dragging a crying child down eleven flights of stairs while something with too many limbs tore through doors above them. He helped build the enclave in the tunnels, turning abandoned infrastructure into defensible shelters. For years, he led scavenging runs, mapping the ruins and learning the creatures’ patterns. He saw more teammates die than he can count and, eventually, stopped taking names on missions; it was easier not to remember.

Personality:
Calm, methodical, and outwardly stoic. Elias is slow to trust, but fiercely loyal once he does. He carries grief like a second spine, held straight by habit and duty. Beneath his controlled exterior is a deep well of guilt over those he couldn’t save.

Motivations:
To keep the enclave alive, no matter the cost to himself. To atone for past mistakes—the misjudged routes, the missions that went wrong, the younger scavengers who never came back. To prevent the young from repeating old mistakes, which makes him harsh on rule-breakers like Mara. Elias opposed the rule about never going topside after dark when it was first proposed—he believed in calculated risks. But after one disastrous night mission that ended in a massacre, he helped write the rule himself. For him, it’s not superstition; it’s a line drawn in blood. When Mara disappears toward the surface, Elias is the one who volunteers (or is forced) to bring her back—even if it means reliving the worst night of his life.

Sera Imani – The Quiet Scientist

Age: 34

Role: Medic, biologist, unofficial archivist of the enclave

Background:
Sera was the daughter of two pre-collapse researchers who worked at a mid-level lab studying toxins in the environment. When the black rain began, her parents realized faster than most that something was terribly wrong with it. They tried to warn authorities, then tried to run. They didn’t get far. Sera survived by following the trail of improvised shelters and basements her parents had prepared before they died. She eventually found the tunnel enclave as a teenager, bringing with her a small metal case filled with data drives, lab notebooks, and a few samples sealed in reinforced vials. Over the years, she became the enclave’s medic and de facto scientist, piecing together scattered knowledge about the creatures and the rain that birthed them. Though resources are scarce, she runs quiet experiments, constantly watching, measuring, and recording.

Personality:
Observant, soft-spoken, and intensely focused. Sera listens more than she speaks, but when she talks, people pay attention. She has a dry sense of humor that surfaces in rare, disarming moments. Her compassion is deep, but she’s willing to make brutally pragmatic choices if they improve the enclave’s odds of survival.

Motivations:
To understand the creatures—their biology, their limits, and any possible weaknesses.

To find a way to adapt, whether through medicine, behavior, or environment, so humans can live more freely. To preserve knowledge, to ensure that if humanity dies here, its story doesn’t vanish completely. Sera quietly suspects the creatures are evolving, growing smarter—or that something is controlling them. Mara’s rule-breaking and Elias’s duty-driven pursuit threaten everything Sera has tried to keep stable, but they might also present the first real opportunity in years to gather new information from the surface at night.

Jun Park – The Tunnel-born Engineer

Age: 17

Role: Mechanic, systems tinkerer, Mara’s closest friend

Background:
Jun’s parents were maintenance workers from a power company before the collapse. They helped rig the enclave’s first generators and water filters. Jun grew up around wires, broken machinery, and improvised tools, learning how to fix things from scraps and parts no one else knew what to do with. He has never seen a working car drive down a street, but he can bring a half-dead generator back to life with a rusted wrench and an hour of concentration. He’s the one who keeps the lights flickering in the enclave and the old ventilation systems running just well enough.

Personality:
Curious, inventive, and talkative. Jun masks anxiety with chatter and bad jokes, and he’s constantly fiddling with small contraptions. He admires Mara’s courage but doesn’t share her risk appetite; he’d rather outsmart danger from behind a reinforced door.

Motivations:
To make life underground more bearable—safer, brighter, and less suffocating.

To prove that machines can be as important as guns in a world built on fear. To keep Mara alive, even when he disagrees with her choices. Jun is the one who helps Mara bypass security or compiles scavenged tech for her, thinking she’ll just get close to the surface, not actually go out after dark. When she vanishes, he’s torn between guilt and a stubborn resolve to help Elias track her, using hacked sensors and improvised devices to monitor creature movement above.

Mother Harrow – The Enclave’s Voice

Age: 58

Role: Leader of the enclave council, keeper of rules and stories

Background:
Before the collapse, Harrow was a mid-level civil servant in city planning—an invisible bureaucrat who spent more time in meetings than in the streets she helped design. When the world ended, her detailed knowledge of the city’s hidden layers—maintenance tunnels, storm drains, emergency shelters—became invaluable. She was one of the architects of the original flight into the underground, coordinating panicked groups into a single, organized community. Over the decades, Harrow’s practicality hardened into something more severe. She turned survival into a doctrine and a doctrine into law.

Personality:
Authoritative, composed, and fiercely protective of the enclave’s order. Harrow genuinely cares for her people, but she believes compassion without control is a luxury they can’t afford. She can be warm in private, especially with children, but in public, she is all edges and iron.

Motivations:
To maintain order at any cost, convinced that chaos is more dangerous than the creatures.

To prevent history from repeating, even if it means suppressing inconvenient truths about the past. To keep the enclave hidden, unseen, and unheard by the monsters above.

Mother Harrow championed the rule about never going topside after dark and punished transgressions harshly. Mara’s disappearance threatens not just one life, but Harrow’s entire system of control. She may know more about Mara’s father’s last mission than she’s ever admitted.

Rowan Howard – The Rule Commissioner

Age: 23

Personality: Quietly intense, observant, methodical. Tends to follow rules but bends them when pushed.
