Chapter 3:

Eyes In The Ruins

DAYS GONE

As the city rotted like a wound left to fester, Eli and Ava moved through hollow buildings, checking for any sign of survivors.

"Let's split up," Eli said. "You cover the high ground while I stay down here. Maybe that way we'll find something sooner or later."

Ava nods and climbs the hollow buildings with ease, moving like an athlete. Elias watches her, quietly impressed.

Standing at the pinnacle, Ava spots a thin trail of smoke rising from the eastern side of Shibuya.

"Eli, come up here," she calls. "I found something."

Eli quickly climbs up to join her. The view of Shibuya is far from pleasant.

"Look, over there" she says, pointing towards the rising smoke.

An explosion shatters the silence, and the moans of the walking dead rise as they turn toward the noise.

"Well, this is going to be a problem," Eli says. "Could it be a sign of survivors? I don't think the explosion happened by accident... maybe it's meant as a diversion," he adds, scanning the area.

"Maybe or maybe it's a trap. Either way, we need to be careful." Ava says

"Even so, they're probably on the move by now, Eli days, scanning the ruined streets. "Who knows where they're headed... or maybe it's just an accident."

The sun dips behind the ruined skyline, casting long shadows across Shibuya. Eli and Ava scan the streets one last time before darkness swallows the city.

"We'll stay here for the night," Eli says, settling behind a collapsed wall. "Move during the day, stick to the rooftops, and avoid the walking dead as much as possible."

Ava nods, dragging a few supplies to a small patch of cover between hollow buildings.

"We can rest here, keep a low profile. First light, we follow the route i marked on the map. slow and careful."

They move quickly but quietly, creating a makeshift perimeter with rubble and broken furniture. Eli keeps watch, eyes scanning the empty streets for movement. "Any noise, any sign of trouble, we retreat," he mutters.

Ava studies the map one more time. "The smoke's to the east. if we wait until dawn, we can approach from the rooftops and avoid most of them. Shadows and height are our advantage."

As darkness settles, both of them hunker down in their temporary camp.

Ava stretches quietly, her movement precise even in stillness. "You always think three steps ahead," she murmurs, glancing at Eli.

He smiles faintly, watching her ease with the shadows. "And you see what I can't," he replies. "I've learned to trust it... and you."

For a moment, silence falls over them, filled only by the distant groans of the walking dead and the occasional creak of the ruined city. There's no need for grand words. In this darkness, understanding and trust speak louder than speech.

Ava leans back against a broken wall, letting herself relax slightly. "I'm glad it's you out here with me," she admits softly.

Eli meets her gaze, the corners of his mouth turning up.

"Same here, Ava. we've got each other's backs...that's enough for tonight."

Eli stands. "I'll keep watch, you can rest" he says, climbing to the pinnacle of the hollow buildings.

Ava feels a quiet warmth in her chest, a small sense of safety she hasn't felt in a long time. She let's out a soft breath, finally allowing herself to relax. Slowly, she leans against the broken wall and closes her eyes, resting for the first time that day.

As Eli kept watch, he noticed something unusual.

while other undead stumbled in random directions, this one is moving with purpose. it pauses at intersections, turning its head slowly as if deciding where to go.

For a moment, it paused again. its head tilted strangely.

Eli squinted.

it looked like.... it was watching him but the distance between him and that one infected was far, too far really.

At that range it was impossible to tell anything for sure. A tilted head could just be the wind nudging a loose neck. A pause could mean the corpse had simply gotten stuck on debris.

he leaned back slightly , forcing his eyes away from the street.

still...

When he glanced again, the same figure seemed to be standing in almost the exact same place.

Not wandering.

Not bumping into anything.

just.... standing there.

Eli frowned.

Maybe the distance was playing tricks on him.

"Yeah," he muttered to himself quietly. "I need sleep."

The wind pushed through the empty buildings with a low whistle, carrying the faint smell of smoke from the east while The crowd of the dead groaned and shifted in the street, nothing more than a restless sea of bodies.

still....

Eli kept his eyes on that spot a little longer than he meant to.

Hours passed by slowly. Gradually, the black sky softened to gray.

a faint line of pale light appeared along the horizon, creeping between the shattered buildings. The first rays of sunlight spilled across the ruined streets, revealing the silent wreckage of the city in cold morning light.

Below them the wandering dead shifted sluggishly, their movements slower in the early hours.

Eli glanced back toward Ava. she stirred slightly as the sunlight reached their camp.

the long night finally giving way to day.

Ava rubbed her eyes and sat up.

"Morning already?"

Eli nodded toward the east.

"Yeah. It’s time to see what caused the smoke."

As they both gathered their supplies, she glanced at Eli. Something about him made her pause.

The dark circles under his eyes were deeper than usual, and his eyelids tagged with exhaustion. His shoulders looked heavier too, like the night had pressed down on him and never quite let go.

"You didn't sleep at all, did you?" Ava said quietly.

"Sorry," he said with a nervous laugh. "Couldn't get any sleep last night. Kept thinking about today."

Ava raised an eyebrow. "Thinking about what?"

Eli shrugged. "Nothing. Just... the smoke, the explosion. Figured we might run into trouble."

He gave a quick laugh. "Not like I was worried or anything."

Ava gave him a small, knowing smile but didn't press. "Well, whatever it is, you should've tried to get some sleep," she said, slinging her bag over her shoulder. "we're moving soon, and you'll need your focus."

Eli nodded, forcing himself to straighten. The sunlight caught the edges of the ruined buildings, making the city look even harsher than it had in the shadows of night. Every shattered window, every toppled sign, every abandoned vehicle seemed to stare back at him.

He kept his gaze on the streets below. That one figure from the night lingered his mind, the way it had stood so unnerving still, almost as if it had been waiting.

"Ready?" Aca asked, glancing up at him.

"Yeah... let's go." He says.

They moved quickly sticking to the rooftops as they planned. The pale morning sun made the city feel exposed, every detail unforgiving. Dust rose in the wind, and the groans of the undead carried faintly from the streets below.

Eli scanned the east. Smoke still curled upward from the distance, a thin gray line against the sky. He forced himself to focus on the path they mapped, but the memory of the unmoving figure tugged at the edge of his mind.

Ava noticed hesitation. "You okay?" she asked quietly, keeping her voice low.

"Last night..." he began, "I saw something. Not like the rest."

Ava frowned. "What do you mean?"

Eli, trying to keep his tone casual but the memory tightens his chest.

"One of the walking dead... it wasn’t wandering like the others. It... stood in one place. Just...watching. i dont know how to explain it."

Ava's eyes widen slightly, scanning the streets below. "Watching? like... noticing you?"

"Yeah," Eli admitted. "Atleast, it. felt like it. And it stayed there. Didn't stumble, didn't bump into anything. just...stayed."

Ava went quiet, studying him. "That's...unsettling."

Eli forced a laugh, rubbing the back of the neck. "Yeah, I guess. Maybe it was nothing. Could've been a trick of the shadows, the distance... but I've got this weird feeling. like it's waiting for something."

Ava’s gaze shifted to the east, toward the thin column of smoke. "Then we need to be careful. Maybe it's tied to the explosion... or the survivors. Either way, we keep our heads down and stay sharp."

Eli nodded, feeling slightly relieved that she didn't panic. "Yeah. Stick to to the rooftops, shadows, and move slow. That's the plan."

Ava gave him a small, tight lipped smile. "Good. let's see what's waiting for us then."
