Chapter 0:
Immortal Bullet
Bullet Trains. The fastest in the world and more efficient than other forms of transportation. Slick and silent, they carved through the night like shooting stars, gliding on elevated platforms hundreds of feet above the ground. Just another source of light pollution in the overpopulated city.
Midnight. A teenage girl rode the train to Central City. She had no interest in the people around her, and neither did they. Black visors over their eyes let them immerse themselves in a diluted world.
She'd never been on one of COT's sky lines. The ticket folded in her pocket was proof of her struggle. Late nights spent researching, plotting, agonizing over every detail of her runaway.
Everything was in its place. She left her bedroom tidy and didn't wake her parents. Working at the convenience store in her neighborhood allowed her to save money, but the biggest problem was getting a ticket. The train system didn't take cash. Her parents refused to use digital currency, so she had to make a card without their knowledge.
Betraying their trust was wrong. They were good people, and they did everything they could to protect her from the rapidly developing city that devoured their quiet neighborhood years ago.
This was necessary. It satisfied a curiosity from her childhood.
She had no siblings, and besides her childhood friend, not many deep connections. Every day, she was surrounded by photos of them. People she'd never met, but knew plenty about. A guy who died before she was born, a close friend of her dad. And his child—the one who disappeared 16 years ago.
The mystery surrounding his disappearance plagued their family for years. The boy's mother suffered with worry for her child. He was the last piece of her lover who passed away tragically.
She left home that night in search of a boy who would now be 18 if he were still alive. She had no idea what he'd be like...
Until she saw him a week earlier. COT aired an exclusive interview with some recruits from one of their projects, 'Humano'. Her parents were asleep, unaware of their teenage daughter staying up late to watch TV.
It had to be him. He looked exactly like his dad. Fluffy blond hair and green eyes. A bandage was wrapped around his head, suggesting the violence he must face as a part of COT's front lines.
Finding him became her number one priority, imagining the praise she'd receive if she brought him back and revealed the truth about his disappearance. That COT concealed him and forced him to join their brutal military operation.
She would join Humano to rescue him.
Saya would bring him home.
