Chapter 1:
Maddie is Missing
The room was deathly silent, and I could feel the air crawling up my spine. Just this evening, I had seen something impossible - Maddie had died right before my eyes. It was just after school when Meg and I had witnessed it, Maddie jumping off of the school rooftop. The sensation of blood splattered across my sweating face, the stains tainting my sleeves.
My hands rub together, an attempt to rekindle any sort of normalcy back into my permanently altered life.
"What do you think they'll say?" Meg hesitates, her long brown curls falling over my shoulder. Her hand clutches mine, yet no warmth emanates from it.
"I don't know...", my hand begins to shake, "I don't know anything anymore. I don't; I don't understand." My heart dums against my chest, threatening to burst at any moment.
The door ahead bursts open instead, the heated glare of a detective inside greeting us. We shakily enter, the room a sweltering sauna under his gaze.
"Girls, you've had a tough day." He frowns as we sit. The door shuts behind us.
"I'm terribly sorry, but you're under arrest for the murder of Maddie Smith."
Meg stands, chair falling behind her, "I-I don't understand"
He smiles, "Ah, not you. Her"
He turns to me, and for the second time that day, my world changes.
