Gust ball

I kept the letter in my pocket. I need to catch up with my classmates, this letter could wait until the end of this subject. Although I got to admit, I’m absolutely dying to know the contents of this letter. But then again, “priorities”.

‘Come on Shin, you don’t know this girl and you don’t know her motives behind these actions.’

I kept on speed walking until I caught up with my classmates. When I caught up with the line, I was greeted by a Kido-san who gave me looks of suspicions. She was staring at the pocket where I kept the letter from Hina. That stare, it’s almost as if she’s saying, “What’s in there?!”.

I just smiled awkwardly and tried to look away hoping that she’ll just forget about this for now. Like I said before, I would prefer to date Kido-san. So I know that I should clear up this issue later. I might even let her read the letter, no wait, that’s a terrible idea.

“Okay we’re here!”, Remi-sensei shouted as she prompted the group to stop.

“Uhhm sensei, this is just an open field”, one of my classmates pointed out the fact that this place looks nothing like a school gym. It’s just some open grass field with some bumpy uneven surfaces.

“Earth Magic: Terrain Shift”

After Remi-sensei casted that spell, the terrain around us started to change. Dirt and rocks were piling up. The ground below us shifted and started to look more like a decent flat floor surface. Soon the open field we were standing on became something like a coliseum.

“Woah”, that was all the whole class was able to blurt out from the amazement of seeing such a masterful display of earth magic.

‘So she can cast such a spell with ease, no wonder she’s a teacher here’

“Okay children, listen up! We’re here today to practice how to play Gust ball”

Gust ball is a famous ball sport that is enjoyed by most people of all ages. The rules are simple, get the ball passed the opponents’ goal keeper and ultimately making it passed the line of the opponent’s goal post all whilst only using wind magic to move the ball. Making contact with the ball using any part of a player’s body is absolutely forbidden by the rules. And also, using magic on your opponent is also considered against the rules.

Growing up as a child, I’ve watched plenty of gust ball games which were broadcasted through the light crystals. I have always wanted to try playing gust ball too when I learn how to use wind magic. And now the opportunity to do so has finally arrived.

“I’m sure most of you know what gust ball is. Now to begin this activity, let’s divide the class into two teams.”

Our class was comprised of twenty-eight students, twelve boys and sixteen girls. So Remi-sensei divided the class into two teams each team having six boys and eight girls, and of course members for each team were chosen randomly.

“Aozora Kido, you go with team A”

……

“Shinzo Kazuchi, you’re on team B”

‘Noooo! I have to go against Kido-san. Oh well’

“Alright, now that the groupings are settled, let’s move on with the lesson on how to actually play gust ball”

“First, remember to put on your personal power adapters”

The whole class puts on their respective power adapters. Remi-sensei takes a look around to check if everyone did as they were told.

“Now, wind magic… The easiest element to cast spells with, but at the same time, it is the hardest to master since the possible applications and techniques are limitless. All, if not, most of you have probably read about it during your reviews before even entering this academy. And I have seen that you all have remarkable aptitudes for elemental magic. So I believe the basic techniques needed for gust ball would be very manageable for all of you.”

Remi-sensei goes to pick up her bag, inside it was deflated ball. She then touches it with her index finger and the ball became inflated.

“So here I have the standard ball used for playing gust ball.”

Remi-sensei tossed the ball up into the air. The ball came falling down but then it stopped, just a few inches off the ground. There seems to be some force from a vortex of air that’s keeping the ball airborne. Remi-sensei then moves her hand left to right and the ball moved in the same manner.

“Ball control, the most essential skill that you will be needing for this game”

“You can achieve this by doing something similar to what I did, I manipulated the air around the ball to keep it afloat and also to maneuver it to whichever direction I please.”

“This is pretty much a simple task for any elemental affiliation student to accomplish. But mastering it to perform sharper and more precise maneuvers will take some time and effort.”

“Alright, I’ll go get the rest of the balls so each team could have a sufficient amount of balls to practice with.”

“Ohh and by the way, if any of you wants to be a part of the academy’s gust ball team, just contact me in my office after today’s classes.”

Remi-sensei walked up to her bag and pulled out more deflated balls. She inflated one and turned to face me.

“Here Mr. Kazuchi! Catch!”
