Rachel sat within the dimly lit operations room, her cheek pressed lazily into the palm of her hand. The monitors hummed, paperwork piled high, and the background TV droned on regarding Auroran politics.
"The first Purani President has proven."
She rolled her eyes.
"I'm so bored!!!!!"
The shrill city alarm cut through the monotony.
The blare of the alarm propelled Rachel into action. After a scramble of shouts and radio calls, she and her team soon found themselves swept into the market district.
Chaos erupted as they arrived, the scene unraveling into panic around them.
Screaming civilians. Overturned stalls. People arguing, clawing past each other.
"MOVE!"
"Don't shove me!"
"Where is my kid? SOMEONE HELP!"
"I am helping myself!"
Above the turmoil, something else was stirring.
Murmurs.
Small, pale, manta-like wraiths, their undersides covered in whispering mouths. The sounds were not sound. They were thoughts, poured where they were not invited.
A vendor grabbed a random man by the collar.
"Say it again! SAY WHAT YOU JUST SAID!"
A woman dropped to her knees sobbing. Two complete strangers began shouting at each other like lifelong enemies. A person laughed uncontrollably. Someone ran into a wall.
"Secure the civilians first!" the captain barked.
Aisling, standing amidst the chaos, was already using her power to grow thornwalls along market paths, steering panicked crowds away from trampling each other.
Captain Femi cracked his flaming whip, burning one out of the air, but more drifted in.
"Rachel," Femi snapped. "Cut the noise. Now."
"On it!"
Rachel exhaled.
Rachel's legs flickered as fur and sinew merged with skin, awakening her foxstep ability.
She sprang off a vendor stall, launching herself into action.
Blades flashed once.
Twice.
Three times.
The Murmurs burst like haze struck by Light, dissolving harmlessly.
"Clear," she called, landing lightly.
Nearby, the vendor clutched his head in despair.
"MY! CABBAGES!!"
"Anmwey! Cause as minor property damage as possible! The captain said."
"Yeah, sorry," she said, holding her neck awkwardly.
A child nearby watched Rachel wide-eyed.
Rachel winked.
"Don't tell anyone I'm cool. I'll never hear the end of it."
The ground shook.
Two Gnashers burst from opposite ends of the market. Wolfbear brutes with stone-crushing jaws and embers burning underneath their fur.
Femi's flaming whip coiled around one and slammed it to the ground, holding it down.
The second barrelled toward fleeing civilians.
Aisling's thornwalls erupted, cutting it off and funneling it down a narrow street.
Rachel darted after the beast, weaving rapidly through wrecked stalls and dodging debris as she gained on it.
The Gnasher spotted a little girl.
It charged.
She screamed.
Suddenly, a stone struck its eye from the crowd.
"Pick on someone your own size."
The beast turned.
"Oh, hey! When I said that, I didn't mean me!!"
"DADDY!!"
"Stay down! I'll be back!"
He ran.
Rachel reached the girl.
"You okay?"
"It's chasing my dad."
Her hands grabbed Rachel's sleeve.
"Please protect my dad."
Rachel nodded.
"I promise I'll get him back to you."
The beast cornered him in an alley.
Trash bins toppled. Stone cracked beneath its claws.
"Hey, if it's about the joke, we can talk this out," he said nervously.
Perched atop a nearby building, Rachel watched, tension coiling as she prepared to intervene.
The beast lunged.
She dropped into the fray, timing her move as the beast lunged.
"Walking Twilight Fox!"
Tendons tore.
The monster staggered.
"Leave it to me. They're waiting, and I promised her."
He blinked.
"Ma'am, I'm emotionally fragile. Please warn me before flirting. But…thanks."
He ran.
She exhaled.
"I may not be able to beat you… But I can stall you until backup gets here."
She launched herself forward once more, movements a blur of calculated precision.
Light followed her feet.
Constellations burst across the alley walls. Starlit foxshapes flickered behind her.
"Silverveil StarDance."
She rose as if gravity loosened.
Her silhouette shimmered.
Her tail flickered.
Her pupils narrowed into thin golden slits.
"You think I'm done? Please."
She leapt.
Her body twisted mid-air.
When she landed, she was no longer entirely human.
The faint outline of a fox flickered around her.
Meanwhile, Roe watched from the mouth of the alley.
The way she moved.
Almost beautiful.
Almost euphoric.
Every strike is deliberate. Every movement is deadly.
She ricocheted from wall to wall within the narrow alley, every leap blending seamlessly into the next as she advanced on the beast, relentless.
Afterimages multiplied.
Fox spirits raced alongside her.
The beast fell back.
It staggered.
Then it changed.
Hide thickened.
Claws sharpened.
It absorbed her Light.
It grew larger.
It roared.
The claw caught her leg.
Slammed her into the wall.
She hit a stone.
Again.
Blood filled her mouth.
Her scream tore through the alley.
Roe froze.
The scream twisted in his head.
Fire.
Smoke.
Voices pleading.
Not again.
Not again.
Not again.
Rachel slid down the wall.
"I don't want to die alone…"
The monster turned toward her.
Roe stepped forward.
The alley froze.
Frost spread across brick and cobblestone.
His breath rolled white in the air.
The beast swung.
Roe slid swiftly across the slick, freshly formed ice coating the alley floor, moving underneath the monster's outstretched arms.
Low.
His fist drove into the creature's chest.
Ice built up over its core.
The monster roared and threw punch after punch.
He shifted.
He dipped.
He adjusted.
The beast overextended.
Roe caught the arm mid-swing.
Frost surged over his knuckles.
Ice sealed around the limb.
The other arm came down at him.
He bent backward.
Planted a foot against the frozen arm.
Flipped upward.
Using it.
The monster tore its trapped limb free.
The frozen arm shattered at the shoulder.
Blood sprayed.
Roe was already above it.
Upside down.
Ice surged along his forearms.
Twin curved blades formed.
He crossed both arms downward.
The monster's head separated cleanly.
It hit the ground.
Roe landed.
The body kept moving.
Staggering.
Reaching blindly.
Rachel saw it through fading vision.
The headless body lurched toward Roe.
Right before it grabbed him
"Frostbite."
The blood spraying from its neck froze in mid-air.
Every vein turned white.
A snowflake pattern bloomed across its chest.
The entire body was locked in place.
Then shattered outward.
Ice and crimson dust exploding in a crystalline burst.
Silence.
Snow fell where the monster had stood.
Roe stood there, frost fading from his arms.
"Hehe, look at a snow day in the middle of summer."
Roe turned and looked over his shoulder at Rachel lying on the ground.
"Please don't die," he muttered."But more importantly… don't make me regret this."
Darkness claimed her.
When she next awoke, beeping surrounded her.
Sterile air.
Flowers beside her bed.
"Your husband and daughter came every day. I'm glad you're finally awake," the nurse said gently.
"I don't have a husband," she said.
"Oh. Then you must have a secret admirer. He and his daughter brought these."
She handed her a card.
Thank you for keeping your promise and getting my daddy back to me. I hope to see you soon and get well.
Rachel's throat tightened.
An hour later, Captain Femi stood at her bedside.
"You had me worried sick. Do you remember anything?"
She hesitated.
"Just blackness."
His eyes sharpened.
"Nobody with that type of ability was on patrol that day. Nothing but a half-frozen corpse. If you remember anything, tell me."
"Yes, sir."
She remembered everything.
And she kept it.
Several days later, after her recovery, Rachel was drawn by the scent of spice into a small restaurant.
Behind the counter stood the man.
"It's you."
He blinked.
"Oh. Hey. Name's Roe. Nice to meet you."
The bell above the door chimed.
Rachel's new routine had begun.
