Chapter 6:

Fire fight

Mercenary

As soon as the carrier stops Sarko gets off of his seat and heads outside. He looks for any threat and reports that he sees no one. “Good.” said Gil. “Alright everyone we need to be quick. Tuta go outside and give me a damage report and an estimate on how long it would take to fix, if it’s too long we walk the rest of the way. Noko, get a good vantage point and scan for threats. The rest of us will set up a defensive perimeter around the ship.” Everyone gets up and gets to work. Tuta heads behind the ship and looks at the damaged lift engine to see what happened. He runs a nanite line through a hole and the nanites scatter through the engine to check the damage. “report.” says Tuta through the comms. “The damage is minor. The engine was damaged but is repairable and the lift had its power cut. ETA, about 25 minutes to repair.” Gil comms Tuta. “Fix the engines.” “Roger.” Tuta takes out his tools and gets to work.

Sarko goes around the ship and lays down disposable barriers. He lays them on the ground and they light up to make a wall of white light. Sarko then heads to his position and is alone. Gil orders both Vhilem and Triton to back up Aphra. The trio head to the opposite side of Sarko and Aphra stands behind the barrier that Sarko put down. Vhilem stands near her and Triton stands away from the two, but is still close. Noko jumps onto the roof of the ship and cloaks. His invisibility is perfect able to be undetected from all kinds of known detection except psychic awareness. He stands to gain as much of a vantage point as he can and looks around the area. In the distance he spots soldiers coming their way and notes down their armor, weapons and coordination. “we got soldiers coming in. Tier 5 armor, modern era weaponry, good coordination. I count 30 of them coming. Most likely a scout platoon sent to test us.” Noko reports to Gil. Gil comms in everyone. “Noko has spotted the enemy. Hold for further orders.” Gil turns off the comm and talks to the crate. “Nova mortar, AOD shells.” The crate opens up and lifts a smart mortar made by Nova. The mortar is capable of independent fire, auto loading, walking, and since it’s Nova it can vibrate. Nova is an adult toys company that also sell explosives. Nova, they explode when you explode, Nova.

Gil turns on the mortar, and it follows Gil. Gil then grabs the shells and loads them into the auto loader. He then heads outside and comms Noko. “Give me their coordinates.” Noko looks through his visor and sees the exact coordinates of the enemy advance and sends them to Gil. Gil then makes some calculations in his head and orders the mortar to fire a line down the middle of the group. It fires, and the shell goes into the air and splits open. Explosives make a line and land directly in the middle of the group, but hit no one. “suppressive fire and aim to split the group.” The mortar responds to Gil in a cute energetic anime girl voice. “You got it cutie teehee.” It fires multiple times and makes a dividing line to force the enemy platoon to split, it works. The enemy is split apart, but they still head towards the downed carrier. “10 to the left, 20 to the right.” Noko reports in. Gil comms everyone. “Sarko you got 20 low tier trash heading your way. Do you need support?” “NO SIR. I can handle it alone.” Sarko turns off his comms and grins. “Aphra you have 10 low tier trash coming your way. You take the lead and you have command over Triton and Vhilem.” “Yes sir.” Aphra says in a meek tone of voice.

Sarko runs into the woods with surprising speed. He sees the oncoming enemy and instead of taking cover he shoulder charges a soldier. They open fire on him but it’s useless his tier 1 power diffusion plate make hexagonal patterns all throughout the armor. The bullets shatter as they hit him and he feels nothing. He then grabs the soldier he ran into by the head with one arm. He then repeatedly smashes him on the tree killing him instantly, but it doesn’t stop Sarko. As he is making a show with the body of the soldier he keeps a look out for anyone capable of hurting him, but spots no one with such capabilities. One soldier freaks out and panics. He desserts and runs away as he runs another soldier yells out to him. “NO WAIT DON’T!” The deserter explodes, leaving a massive hole in his chest. Seeing the man explode Sarko knows making them dessert will not happen, so he throws the body and moves into the trees. He flows like water and hits like a tank. His gun is semi automatic and each time he fires his gun kicks like mad bull. A shot hits a soldier’s center mass and his body is split in two. The upper half makes 3 full 360’s before it hits the ground. The bullet doesn’t stop it goes through a tree and hits the side of another soldier. He caves in and forms a V. He walks for a few seconds before collapsing and dying. Sarko moves around from tree to tree and away from the ship making the soldiers focus on him.

Aphra heads into the trees and takes the two brothers with her. She knows the enemy will have difficulties hurting her so she orders The two brothers to hide behind the trees and wait for her signal. Not long after the enemy spot her and fire at her. Her bounce plate has a slippery outer surface and is made of strong yet flexible material. Bullets come at her and fly off in random directions. She angles herself properly and the bullets fire back at the enemy. She then looks for a soldier who is further behind. She finds one and fires her loud needler at him. It uses gauss tech to fire and so the shots are silent. The soldier is hit and is caught completely off guard. The needles then vibrate and the pain is excruciating. More needles hit the soldier, and he stands still as the vibrations make his body bleed through every pore and make the soldier turn red. He dies standing as his body keeps being destroyed and the others look in horror. “Now fire at them.” Aphra gives the command and the two brothers look over to fire. Triton has no issues. The soldiers armor has their neck exposed so Triton aims for the neck. His killer instinct and aim are impeccable and he does not miss. Vhilem on the other hand struggles. Vhilem has never killed anyone in his life. He thought it would be easy, but it isn’t and he has trouble pulling the trigger. His mind replays a scene when he was younger about a man who had done terrible things at the orphanage. He vaguely remembers how it went down. A man appeared at the orphanage and took someone dear to Vhilem. His mind blocks the rest, the details he forced himself to forget, but he remembers how he tried to fight him and was unsuccessful and was beaten near to death. It was then that Triton gets the upper hand and breaks the mans legs with his pickaxe from the mines. He then hits him again and again with brutal malice tearing him apart. Vhilem zones out at the worst time and when he finally regains focus he is too late.

The soldiers focus is back to the small squad and one opens fire at Vhilem. He holds down the trigger and unloads a spray of bullets at Vhilem. Bullets hit him hitting his shoulder, midsection, and blowing off his ear, destroying his hearing. He falls to the ground in pain and Aphra notices. She runs to him and orders Triton to suppress the enemy and grab their attention. Aphra is on top of Vhilem and inspects the damage. She makes a quick calculation of how much nanites she will need and takes out her hyper-dermic needle. She inserts the needle and gives a small dose just enough to fix the damage. The nanites get to work and quickly seal up his wounds and replace the missing ear. The pain quickly goes away and his hearing is fixed. “Get up. You’ll be fine.” Aphra is both commanding and reassuring at the same time. Vhilem gets up and they both aim at the enemy, but there is no one left to fight. Aphra looks around and counts the bodies. “10 bodies.” She says to herself. She looks over at Triton with both awe and dread. “lets head back. were done here.” Aphra then runs back to the carrier and the two brothers follow.

Noko spots something alarming. “I see 10 more coming our way. Tier 3 heavy power armor and shielded. They all have plasma rifles. ETA 5 minutes till arrival.” Gil is alarmed hearing this and comms Tuta. “Tuta how much more time do you need!” “10 minutes. gonna forget about reinforcing and just focus on making it work.” Gil nods to himself and takes a second to think. “…Hellfire adherent.” The crate on the ship stands up and runs to Gil with the shells he requested. Upon arrival Gil grabs the shells and loads them into the auto loader of his mortar. “Noko give me their coordinates.” Noko does as instructed and Gil makes his move. He inputs his orders into the mortar and it fires, sending one shell in front of the incoming troop. It sprays hellfire adherent as it falls and once it hits the ground it explodes into a massive wall of dark red fire. This stops the troop from advancing too fast. Even though the shielding they have make them immune to electrical attacks and have heavy resistance towards physical attacks it gives them no resistance to extreme temperature changes. They look around to see another way through and choose a direction. They run and suddenly one trooper in front caught on fire and the wall of flames erupted. Gil had shot another shell and timed it. He gambled that they would choose that direction instead of another one and his gamble payed off. The trooper engulfed in flame tries to step out of the wall of fire and his armor melts. He barely had enough time to step out of the flames before most of his power armor melted turning him into a steel statue. The flames keep burning and soon the steel statue turned into a metal puddle. The rest of the troop backed off and backtracked. Gil clicks his tongue in frustration those two shells costed an arm and a leg to get and they were the only ones he had.

“Done!! everyone on the ship now.” Tuta announces over the group comm channel. He is the first one to board and then Aphra, Vhilem, Triton, Sarko and lastly Noko. Gil was the last one to enter but before he did he ordered his crate to give him one more shell: a sun flash shell. He then ordered it to get in the carrier and he loads the shell into the Nova mortar. The mortar loaded he enters the carrier and sends the ship flying, but the troop arrives. Their plasma rifles are more than capable of destroying the carrier in one volley, but as soon as they aim the mortar explodes into such a brilliant and bright light it can be seen from space and blinds the troop permanently regardless if they had enhanced eyes or not.

They make it out safely and head to the meeting point.

Gil then aims his gun at Noko. Noko has his arm folded and doesn’t seem scared. “How the hell did you not see the lumbering tanks coming our way.” Gil said in a deep voice while staring down Noko. Noko looks at Sarko and asks. “Sarko. how many bodies did you count.” “I counted ten. I did find it strange but just assumed they ran off and died.” Noko nods his head. “They almost got us. Send in everyone with trash gear and hold back the real threat once they got a taste at what they were up against.” “And why didn’t you notice it sooner?” Gil asked calmly with no accusation in his voice. “I was looking over at Aphra’s squad as over watch. They were struggling and thought they might need some support. We are fortunate that they dealt with their side quickly and gave me the opportunity to look around again.” Gil shakes his head. “this mission is gonna be the death of us. A full squad of plasma plus shields. Volsta is serious about winning this.” Noko nods. “agreed. Let’s hope our mission is just to stand guard.” Noko says sarcastically.
