Chapter 4:
Kuu-Chan is Hard to Read
“Erisa!” Nakano Sae called out to her friend who was sitting on a bench placed in the lobby of the Arts and Design Building. Nakano Sae was a second year student at the University as a graphic design major. She had just come out of her class and planned to meet her friend right after. She had straight, black hair that went down to the center of her back and was carrying a large brown tote bag across her left shoulder. Her friend looked up from her phone and greeted her with a smile.
“Ah! Sae, you’re finally done with class.” Hanazawa Erisa was a second year student who is a fashion design major. She had brown pigtails that reached her shoulders and wore a preppy-style outfit reminiscent of a high school uniform.
“Sorry, the class went on longer than usual. Were you waiting for a long time?”
“No, it’s fine. I just took the time to look over stuff from other classes. I also did a bit of shopping,” Erisa grinned widely.
Sae chuckled, “You haven’t changed a bit.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Ah, nothing,” Sae sat down near her friend. “So, how do you like it here?”
“Hmmm. The Fashion department is definitely better. At the other university, it was so focused on Sciences that the Fashion department barely had any new equipment.”
“I told you to come here when you apply here during high school.”
“It was too hard to get into. But, luckily I worked hard my first year there to be able to transfer here,’ Erisa let out a sigh of relief. “By the way, ever since I’ve been here, there’s been talks of a Fashion Department prince?”
“Prince?” Sae thought for a moment then held up a finger once she figured out who Erisa was referring to. “Ahh, I’ve heard of him. Aikou Noriyuki, he’s a third year here.”
“Really? Is he single? Maybe I can try to get closer to him and we can become a campus couple!” Erisa wrapped her fingers together and placed them near her cheeks as she closed her eyes daydreaming.
“Like I said before, you really haven’t changed,” Sae looked at her friend with embarrassment. The entrance to the building opened and Noriyuki came inside. As he was walking across the lobby, he stole the attention of the many students that were within his presence. He received looks of admiration from both his male and female colleagues and greeted all of their gazes with a warm smile. “Looks like he just entered the building.”
“Really? Where?” Erisa turned her attention towards the entrance and when her eyes fell upon Noriyuki, her breath was taken away. Everything in the room seemed to disappear and it was as if she and him were the only two people in the room. “He’s…my ideal type,” she stated confidently. She turned around to face her friend and went up close to her face, “Tell me, he’s single right?”
Sae backed away with a nervous look on her face, “I don’t know. I’ve never talked to him so I don’t know him well.”
“Well then, that doesn’t matter. What matters is that I make him fall for me and soon we’ll become the number one campus couple.” Her hands wrapped around her cheeks as she closed her eyes to daydream again with a lovestruck look on her face.
“But, how are you gonna do that?”
“Heh,” Erisa let out a confident chuckle. “Take a look at me! I’m beautiful! There’s no way a guy could turn me down.” Sae looked at her friend with a mix of embarrassment and amusement as she confidently spoke about herself. “Plus, that’s just how the world works. Beautiful people will always end up together. Have you not seen how movies and TV work?”
“You…really haven’t changed.” From behind Erisa, Sae spotted Noriyuki talking to Nonoka and pointed it out. “Well, looks like your delusion can’t come true.”
“Huh?” Erisa turned around to witness the same thing Sae was seeing. “Who’s that? And why is she talking to him?”
“I’ve seen her around the building, but I don’t know her.”
“Curses! She’s cute too! Well, it looks like I have a rival then! Just wait, I’ll make him fall so hard for me that he’ll forget all about her! Sae, you’re right, I should’ve applied here way before. My life here is starting out to be more interesting than I thought.”
“You do realize this is reality and not some romance anime, right?”
Erisa let out a condescending chuckle, “Romance animes are just a mirror of real life.”
“If this was a romance anime, you’d be the villain though.”
“EH?”

Noriyuki had just come out of his class with a sad look on his face and sighed, “I can’t believe Nonoka’s stealing Kuu-Chan from me this weekend. I’ll be so lonely.” As he was lost in thought, he bumped into a girl, causing her to fall to the ground. “Ah! I’m sorry, are you okay?”
Hanazawa Erisa was following through with her plan to get to know Noriyuki. “Heh, step one, check. Now, just make eye contact with him while giving him a cute, loving gaze.” She took his hand and looked up at him, making direct eye contact causing Noriyuki to blush. “Yes, now he’s probably falling in love after seeing my face.”
“Wow, her outfit is so stylish. I like her taste in fashion,” Noriyuki actually thought.
“I’m okay, sorry, I’m kind of clumsy,” Erisa gave an innocent smile causing Noriyuki to blush more.
“This girl…could be my muse,” Noriyuki thought to himself. “No, it’s my fault. I should’ve been looking where I was going.”
Erisa let out a small chuckle and stood up to face him, “ I’m Hanazawa Erisa. I’m a second-year fashion design major. I just transferred to this university this year.”
“I see! I’m also a fashion design major but I’m a third-year student,” Noriyuki introduced himself. “With a style like that, it doesn't surprise me that she went into fashion,” Noriyuki thought to himself.
“Ah, I’ve heard about you! You’re the Fashion Department’s Prince,” Erisa’s eyes were filled with awe as she looked at him.
Noriyuki blushed out of embarrassment, “I’m sorry?”
“You’re as handsome as other people say you are.”
“Thank you,” Noriyuki scratched his head with an embarrassed expression.
“Oh, you’re also a third year student, right? So, you’ve taken this class before?” Erisa went through her book bag and took out a textbook with the title “3D Illustrations for Fashion Design”.
Noriyuki took the book from her hand and skimmed through some pages, “Ah, I remember this class.”
“I’m having a bit of trouble with this. I can do 2D illustrations by hand, but I don’t understand the software we are using to make 3D images.”
“I see, if you want, I can try and help you with using the software. I had troubles with it too until a friend helped me,” Noriyuki thought of Osuke, who helped him understand the software’s mechanics.
“Really, you’d do that for me?” Erisa had a wide smile on her face as she looked at Noriyuki with sparkles in her eyes.
“Mm,” Noriyuki agreed. “As your senior, I should try my best to help out my juniors,” Noriyuki smiled.
“He’s handsome and nice. The complete package,” Erisa thought.
“I have time this weekend, we can do this in my apartment.”
“Ah, you’re a lifesaver!” Erisa jumped in excitement. “My plan is working flawlessly,” Erisa thought to herself and had a mischievous grin on her face.

“Huh?” Tomohiro looked at Nonoka with a blank expression.
“We’re going shopping together this weekend. I need new clothes.” Nonoka was at Tomohiro and Noriyuki’s place after she met with Noriyuki in the Arts Department building. She bumped into him after her class and told Noriyuki she’d be taking Tomohiro away from him for the weekend, only to leave Noriyuki depressed about not spending time with his Kuu-Chan. Nonoka and Tomohiro were sitting next to each other on the living room couch.
“New clothes, again? You fashion majors act like you need a new outfit for every day of the year,” Tomohiro complained.
“I’m getting tired of wearing the same things for two years now. I want to spend these last two years trying out a different style,” Nonoka wrapped her hands around the back of her head and leaned back into her seat.
“But, why drag me along?”
“Eh? Are you saying you don’t enjoy spending time with me?”
Tomohiro sighed, “I never said that. I’ll go with you since I have nothing to do this weekend. But, you’re not allowed to make me try on clothes and dress me up.”
Nonoka felt as if she had just been stabbed in the heart, “But…But…THAT’S THE FUN PART OF GOING WITH YOU!!!!”
“I knew it, you just wanted to dress me up,” Tomohiro shook his head in disappointment.
Nonoka pouted, “Fine! I won’t make you try on anything. As long as you’re coming with me,” she smiled at Tomohiro who returned with a smile of his own.

A couple of days later, Nonoka entered the Arts building to attend her class. She was looking up new stores online to plan out where she wants to go this weekend with Tomohiro. Because she wasn’t paying attention, she bumped shoulders with someone and that changed her awareness back to her surroundings.
“Ah, I’m sorry,” Nonoka apologized.
“No, it’s my–.” Hanazawa Erisa stopped as soon as she made eye contact with Nonoka. “It’s you!”
“I’m sorry, do we know each other?”
“You may not know it yet, but we are rivals of love!”
“Excuse me,” Nonoka looked at Erisa with a dumbfounded expression.
“I know that you may have connections to the prince, but I will not let you take him away from me,” Erisa confidently declared.
“Prince? Connections?”
“Don’t act all innocent with me. Right now, you may have him in the palms of your hands, but don’t let your guard down. Once I have my time with him, he’ll soon realize that I’m the girl of his dreams and leave you for good.”
“Uh…,”
“You may be cute, but judging from the look on your face, you don’t have the intelligence to comprehend what’s going on right now,” Erisa smirked.
“What’s that supposed to mean,” Nonoka angrily retorted while holding up a fist.
“I’ll just tell you how it is. I, Hanazawa Erisa, will steal the prince from you. Remember my name next time you think of him. You can do your best to keep him in your clutches, but you will fail no matter what because no guy can resist me!” Erisa let out a condescending laugh as she exited the Arts building, leaving Nonoka standing there just as confused as she was in the beginning.
“What was that all about,” Nonoka thought to herself.

“Sorry, Yuki. I won’t be able to be with you on Saturday.” Tomohiro apologized at the dinner table.
“It’s okay, I’m meeting someone that day,” Noriyuki reassured him.
“Oh, Osuke’s coming to meet you?”
“No, I’m helping out a junior with one of her classes.”
“Ohhh,” Tomohiro expressed in amazement.
Trivia: Tomohiro is a 3rd year Chemistry major, Noriyuki is a 3rd year Fashion Design major, Nonoka is a 3rd year Fashion Design major, Osuke is a 3rd year Biochemistry major
