Chapter 1:
The Fifth Council
He causally leaned his chair back, resting it on a small table behind him. The rectangular room was dimly lit by the light coming from the curtained windows. Beside the small table was a bed, in front of Shin'ō a larger table with various books and notebooks scattered on it. His phone stand with his mobile sat on the table, projecting a video call with his 4 friends.
“So I'll be bringing the chips. What are y’all bringing?” the same voice rang out again.
"I'm bringing the soda. Two big bottles." A different, energetic voice came out.
“I’ve got some cash left from last week. I’ll grab extra stuff if needed.” A deep and calm voice came.
“I’ll bring my motorcycle. I’m not walking to school on the last day.” Another voice came.
Shin'ō stopped looking up and turned to the camera, his voice deep as he said.“I’ve got data, so I’ll just bring my phone. It's getting late. Bezkon. Audaxor. Remember to grab the soda and chips before the stores close."“Yeah, yeah. Relax, dude.” The same energetic voice came again.
The next day Shin'ō sat alone in his seat at the back of the classroom. Sunlight pouring in through the open windows, as he secretly took out his phone to check the time.
“Seems like I’m the first one again…” He thought.
Thirty minutes later, Bezkon and a taller boy, Helwin came to the class. They both slumped into the seats beside Shin'ō.
"You didn't forget the cash, did you?" Shin'ō questioned, looking at Helwin.
"Yes, it's right here." He pointed to his inner coat pocket.
15 minutes later Audaxor and Jovino came. They took their usual places on the last seat behind the other three.
Bezkon looks behind and asks. "You got the stuff?"
"Yes, five bags for each of us." Replies Audaxor. While Jovino flaunted his motorcycle key.
"Helwin, what time is it?" Shin'ō glanced over.
Helwin pulled out a silver pocket watch from his left coat pocket. "Exactly 7:25" he replies.
During class, Shin'ō leaned back and whispered, "Hey, give me my chips bag. I'm going to record this."
Audaxor smirked and passed him the bag. “Send me that video later.”
They both chuckled, quiet enough not to get caught.By the end of the school day, the group was hanging out near the school gates. The air was full of the strange mix of excitement and melancholy that only the last day of school could bring.
Jovino grinned. “This day is gonna be unforgettable.”
Bezkon glanced at Shin’ō, his smile dimming slightly. “Hope so… even if we never meet him again.”
That night, the streets were quiet. Shin'ō stood alone under the dim blue glow of a flickering street lamp. Staring at his phone, he crossed the street where one end was completely filled with darkness. Only the street light and Shin'ō's phone illuminated the place.
“So… where is this place?” he mumbled.
Just then, a new message flashed on his screen: Look right.
Confused, Shin’ō turned to look at the darkness, then suddenly a blazing white light blinded him.
CRASH!
THUD.
Silence...
Shin’ō's body layed motionless in the street. The truck that hit him had already skidded past and escaped. The driver drove the truck far in the nearby forest and stopped. He got out, hands trembling. He removed his mask.
It was Jovino, his face pale.“I’m… I’m sorry.”
In a tall building overlooking the street, Helwin sat in a dark room, furiously typing on a laptop. CCTV feeds flickered and vanished.
“Why didn't they do it in a place with no cameras? Alright, deleting all of it now…”
In the alley, Audaxor lifted Shin’ō’s lifeless body, gently and carefully. “Huh… bro’s surprisingly light.”
Bezkon stood at the corner of the street, waving a traffic baton and shouting, “Hey. Hey! This road’s closed for maintenance! Dangerous stuff ahead!”
A curious pedestrian turned away, changing his route.
Far above the city, the view zoomed out.
The boys’ phones buzzed simultaneously.
A distorted voice crackled from each device.
“Mission Complete.”
