Chapter 3:
Jaded soul
What is that sound?
Why did we stop?
"Selena do not come out, we are under attack by bandits."
I heard boots planted on the ground. You can feel it in the air. Darkness is everywhere.
Should I fight?
Should I keep my powers a secret?
I don't know what to do.
"Look Selena you are not weak or a coward, you must not show your true powers. If you do, every surrounding kingdom will want you for your power."
I understand.
Screaming is all I heard. The carriage rattled. The horses were getting scared. Thump after thump, bodies were dropping.
I peeped outside of my window. The storm is peeking at me tonight, looking deep in my soul.
"What are you talking about Selena, you are not going out of the carriage. I will bind you if I have to. This is for your own safety. Your power can turn a nation against another."
I know my power is unique.
"It's not unique, it's rare. You can get information, influence people to your will while being strong enough to be an arch mage."
Sighs. I guess you're right, Telna.
"Heh, I know I am."
I heard a howl of wind. I peeped out of my carriage again and the sky was purple-ish with dark grey clouds.
All my life I was this renowned princess. Everyone feared me while others were paid to like me. I saw it all but never thought it was true.
I thought about vanishing, running away. I was breathing steady and slow. My parents were not around a lot. They were doing their duties for the capital of Viram.
My father was the king of Viram. He was strong, one of the strongest kings you will ever see in a lifetime. There are stories about his triumphs. He was a force to be reckoned with. I knew deep down I have that same passion.
Making a difference for me, not being known as Selena the daughter of the king. I always was overlooked by that title.
Even at ShineRidge academy I was always one step ahead of most students. They admired me for me and not for my skills. However, in my last year a terrible incident happened. It was traumatic. I was doing a skill contest for my exam and everything was going well until I got hit with harsh words from a person named Mina.
Mina was the second heir to her family chambers. She specialized in poison magic. If you need some kind of drug to kill, to weaken, to submit, she was the person you go to. I respected her power. Not as good as mine but strong enough to consider her partial on par with me.
During the exams she came up to me, acted all friendly, then she said something that made me lose my cool. I grabbed her by the pink hair and slammed her hard into the ground.
I stared a cold glare into her eyes. She tried to push me off but my strength was like my fathers, hard to shake.
Say that again, I shouted, as I punched her face.
"This is what I wanted. Yes, beat me up some more, show me how you are like your father, a crownless king who has no decency. You are better off being poor and a nobody."
I just stood there over her petite body.
No words were needed.
Just pure utter screams from her.
Her entourage came in as if they were shocked to see this. One of them went to get the guards as if I was the one who started this.
Good thing I got off of her and acted as if nothing happened despite her entourage. The school will investigate this thoroughly if brought to the principal.
My power was formidable. I got onto the arena floor. Loud roars for me but it was not really for me, it was just to get in my good graces due to my father handing the throne to me.
"SELENA!"
I snapped out of it.
Yes?
"We are losing guards left and right. We only have a few more left. I hate to say it but you might need to get out there and burn them to a corpse."
I saw a glimmer of a shadow. An aura you don't see. No theatrical display. Just pure bloodshed.
The rain picked up louder and harder. I barely saw a glimpse of his eyes. It was scary, as if he had done this before. His long hair looked like he was homeless while his body said otherwise. He might be my age.
The moment I blinked he was finished. I heard a very shallow sound as one of the bandits yelled.
"Ouch, aw how cute. This kid thinks he can take me down with that dull blade."
"Here I come boy. You will be touched and sold on the market for a body like yours."
I heard huge stomps on the ground as if it was an earthquake. A loud thump fell to the ground and it stopped. The bandits were just as shocked as the guards that a kid took down the biggest person.
As the bandits were shocked I witnessed the rest of the guards finish them all beside one.
One guard in particular was impatient and ran over to him. No one stopped him.
He was dead the next moment. My first time seeing two dead lifeless corpses.
I walked out of the carriage to get a glimpse of what he looks like. We need to recruit him. He will be a good asset to have.
"Hi there, what's your name?"
"Thank you for saving us. My name is Selena Cross."
He just stared into my soul with his cold piercing eyes. Before I could get another word out he was gone with the gear from the bandits and the guard.
