Chapter 12:
generation dead as a corpse
No missions.
No targets.
No pressure.
Just… space.
Living Room — Late Night
Rain tapped gently against the windows.
The house felt softer somehow.
Less like a base.
More like a home.
Kari & Jackie
“You’re holding it wrong,” Jackie said.
“I’m not.”
“You are.”
Kari squinted at the tool in her hand. “…Okay maybe I am.”
Jackie grinned. “It’s fine, I mess it up too.”
“Good. That makes me feel better.”
Gage & Donna
They didn’t sit close.
They didn’t need to.
Weapons laid out between them—maintained in comfortable silence.
“You’re thinking,” Donna said.
“I always think.”
“More than usual.”
A pause.
“…They’re changing,” Gage admitted.
Donna nodded slightly.
“So are you.”
Tara & Elliot
“You’re quieter,” Elliot observed.
“I’m processing,” Tara said.
“That’s new.”
She tilted her head.
“Not really. I just don’t usually say it.”
He smiled faintly.
“I like this version.”
Tara considered that.
“…Noted.”
Diego & Irene
“You did well,” Irene said.
“You already said that.”
“I’m saying it again.”
He smiled slightly.
“…Thanks.”
A pause.
“I think I get it now,” he added.
“Get what?”
“Why they do this.”
Irene studied him.
“And?”
“…I’m not sure I agree with all of it.”
She nodded.
“Good.”
Stephanie & Jenny (Final Beat)
Back at the window.
Of course.
“Our dearest grandmother likes you,” Jenny said.
“She respects results.”
“That’s her version of liking someone.”
Stephanie glanced at her.
“…Then she likes you too.”
Jenny smiled softly.
“I think she always has.”
A pause.
Rain falling steadily now.
“You ever think about stopping?” Jenny asked quietly.
Stephanie didn’t answer immediately.
“…No,” she said.
“Me neither.”
Another pause.
Then—
“But maybe,” Jenny added,
“we don’t have to be only one thing.”
Stephanie looked at her.
That idea again.
Inefficient.
Illogical.
Dangerous.
…
“…Maybe,” she said.
Closing Image
The house was quiet.
Not empty.
Not cold.
Just… still.
For once, nothing was hunting them.
Nothing was watching.
Nothing needed to be erased.
They existed.
As siblings.
As something softer than what they did.
And for a moment—
that was enough.
