Chapter 20:
generation dead as a corpse
The system categorized everything.
That was its strength.
That was its flaw.
The Anomaly Test
It started small.
Like everything else.
A distortion in space—localized, precise—wrapped around Alec as he walked home.
Not an attack.
A measurement.
Reality bent subtly:
Distance stretched.
Sound dulled.
Time… dragged.
Anyone else wouldn’t notice.
Anyone else would adapt unconsciously.
Alec stopped walking.
“…Oh,” he said quietly.
Observation
The pressure increased.
The system adjusting variables—
Testing response.
Testing limits.
Testing definition.
Alec looked around—not panicked, not confused.
Just… thoughtful.
“This is inefficient,” he murmured.
Break (Not Like the Others)
He didn’t fight it.
Didn’t tear it like Diego.
Didn’t slip around it like Jenny.
Didn’t overpower it like Stephanie.
He simply—
disagreed.
Correction
The distortion… stuttered.
Like a sentence rewritten mid-word.
Alec took a step forward—
and the space corrected itself to allow it.
Not forced.
Not broken.
Just… realigned.
Another step.
The system pushed harder.
Reality bent deeper.
Alec frowned slightly.
“…No.”
Unmaking the Frame
The distortion collapsed.
Not outward.
Not violently.
But inward—
like it had never been a valid state to begin with.
Silence.
Normal space.
Normal time.
Alec blinked once.
“…That was strange.”
Elsewhere — Reaction
Tara froze mid-sentence.
“…Did you feel that?”
Gage looked up.
“Yes.”
Jenny’s eyes sharpened instantly.
“…That wasn’t us.”
Stephanie already knew.
“…Alec.”
