Chapter 38:

Draw for the save

En Passant Grandmaster Volume 6

Back at board 3 on the men's side, Mori scowled as Hans-Ulrich grinned and captured the pawn at e4 with his knight. "Really getting on my nerves," he thought as he captured the pawn at h2 with his bishop. "Check!"

Hans-Ulrich let out a chuckle and shook his head. "Ah, a suicidal play. This will do nothing for you," he thought as he captured said bishop with his king.

"Check. Stop with the chuckling, asshole," Mori retorted as he moved his queen to h4.

Hans-Ulrich simply grinned and shrugged as he slid his king to g1, allowing Mori to capture the knight at e4 with his queen.

"Rook e1, queen h4, bishop e3, f-rook e8, rook c1, rook e6, g3, queen h3, queen f3, a-rook e8, pawn b3, rook f6, queen g2, queen g4, pawn d5, pawn h5, wow, Mori's playing really solidly. If he keeps this up, he might be able to get into a drawn endgame," Danny noted.

Hans-Ulrich then moved his bishop to f4, allowing Mori to check him by capturing the rook at e1 with his rook, however Hans-Ulrich simply captured said rook with his own rook soon after. Next, a pawn trade occurred on d5 with Mori first capturing the pawn at d5 with his c-pawn, then Hans-Ulrich following up by capturing said pawn with his c-pawn.

Mori then moved his pawn to h4 while Hans-Ulrich moved his queen to e4. He then captured the pawn at g3 with his h-pawn, prompting Hans-Ulrich to capture said pawn with his bishop. Then, Mori moved his queen to h3 and for a few moves, it looked as though he'd get a draw by repetition.

"Queen h1, queen h3, queen e2, rook h6, queen f3, bishop g4, queen g2, queen h5, rook e3, pawn b5, things are looking like a draw," Nancy noted.

"Mori's been playing even the whole game. Pretty big accomplishment for him," Danny smiled as Hans-Ulrich moved his pawn to d6.

"But can he hold it? It's clear at a glance Mori's the more exhausted one," Nancy frowned as Mori moved his bishop to d7.

"Chess is a game of skill and endurance, mainly at the longer time controls. In blitz, it's mostly just "don't mess up" unless its a marathon," Danny quipped as Hans-Ulrich moved his rook to e1.

"It's harder to win as black, and Mori is forced to play black against a grandmaster-level player in a high stakes match. That's bound to effect his psych more given he's the lower-rated player," Nancy argued as Mori pinched his forehead and moved his bishop to e6.

"On the flip-side, don't you think it might be more pressure for Hans-Ulrich to beat this opponent rated so much lower than him in order to secure, at the very least, a draw for the team?" Danny countered as Hans-Ulrich moved his pawn to f3.

Nancy zoomed the camera in on the players. While Mori was clearly exhibiting signs of stress, Hans-Ulrich was relaxed and grinning. "Sure doesn't look stressed to me," Nancy growled as Mori moved his bishop to d7.

"Hey, he could get overconfident," Danny pouted as Hans-Ulrich moved his rook to e7.

"If Mori wins this, I'll shave my head," Nancy glared as Mori moved his queen to c5, putting Hans-Ulrich's king in check.

"Wait, you serious!?" Danny gasped as Hans-Ulrich moved his queen to f2.

"ONLY if Mori wins. They draw, nothing. That's just how confident I am Hans-Ulrich won't blunder away the game," Nancy growled as Mori moved his queen to h5.

"Oh," Danny frowned as Hans-Ulrich moved his queen to e3.

"I'll ask for further elaboration after the broadcast is over."

Back at the board, Mori desperately moved his queen to h1, but that too proved to be futile as Hans-Ulrich simply moved his king to f2. He then tried moving his bishop to h3, which seemed to yield good dividends as Hans-Ulrich moved his queen to e1 to counter.

"Check, CHECK!" Mori frantically shouted as he moved his queen to g2.

"My, only a little while longer to outlast you," Hans-Ulrich thought as he moved his king to e3.

However, Mori didn't give up and moved his rook to e6, prompting Hans-Ulrich to capture it with his rook.

"Yes... YES! I got him!" Mori thought as he captured the rook at e6 with his bishop.

Hans-Ulrich's smug grin he had been sporting for the whole match suddenly vanished. "Nein... NEIN! SCHIZER!" he thought as he moved his queen to f2.

Mori on the other hand was overjoyed, yet still at his mental limits. He maintained enough mental strength to move his queen to h3, prompting Hans-Ulrich to move his queen to e1. Mori immediately moved his queen back to g2 while Hans-Ulrich moved his queen back to f2. He then desperately moved his queen back to h3, but if Hans-Ulrich didn't move his queen back to e1, he'd be in trouble. However, Hans-Ulrich, too flustered to think things out, decided to do so, allowing Mori to move his queen back to g2, triggering the threefold repetition rule and ending the game in a draw.

"SCHIZER!" Hans-Ulrich fumed aloud as he slammed his fists on the table.

Though Prussia still led 1.5-0.5, it was frustrating for Hans-Ulrich that he couldn't cement the advantage. And worse, it gave Okisato a confidence boost.

"Mori really pulled his weight. As for you, ya one-eyed monster, you want the Baron Buster, you'll GET the Baron Buster!" Okisato thought as he slammed his king down on e2, bringing a maniacal smile to Diederich's face.
