Chapter 31:
meet the bloodbriars
Father stands in the shade.
Of course he does.
Mother insisted we go outside. “Sunlight builds character,” she said in a karen like impersonation but she knows well that the sun is a total menace underneath her veneer as the ice starts cracking through the sunshine.
“…Or destroys it,” Father muttered.
The playground is loud.
Children scream. Run. Fall. Repeat.
“…Fascinating,” I say.
Persephone nods. “Unregulated behavior.”
A boy climbs too high on the structure. He shouts, “Watch this!”
No one stops him.
We watch.
He slips. Falls. Cries.
“…Predictable,” I note.
Another child boasts about being “the fastest.” Persephone quietly nudges a conversation.
“Are you sure?” she asks sweetly.
The child runs harder. Trips.
Father, from the shadows: “…You’re not helping.”
“We are observing,” Persephone replies.
We sit together afterward.
Conclusion:
“Stupidity escalates without resistance.”
Father nods faintly.
“…Correct.”
