Chapter 28:
KILLRIGHTS
Vadars laid in the dark cell alone. He could hear a lot of stuff such as the dripping pipes and the skittering of whatever insects decided to reside in that room. There weren't many cells. Only one. In that one, Vadars stared at the ceiling. It was an awful ceiling. A bored looking one.
He was sweating. He could feel the sweat pour down from his back and armpits. He mostly didn't care about the condition of his body but his mind was starting to pay attention to detail.
"Hey ceiling," Vadars said.
The ceiling didn't reply.
It was this solitude that made Vadars uncomfortable. It was almost unnerving. Everything was unnerving. He was going to die in a couple of days. He didn't even know whether it was night or day. There wasn't a window and the door in front of him sealed off any light.
Through this, the only thing he could interact with was his mind. He started to remember stuff like the time he went through the mess hall fridge with Janda that one time to get milk and other delights. He got busted and did discipline whilst Janda got away after cleverly talking his way out saying he was 'monitoring' him.
Vadars glared. The nerve of the bastard.
He then remembered Akio. Gosh, Akio and her big mouth, wringing him out for that. Rosner kept all hush and Uvo just laughed his ass off. That was Delta. His home. His family.
A sigh left his lips.
Was it really his family? What even was his family?
His real family was dead. Gone and never to be found. He was raised in the academy and was drafted in to Delta.
But even then, who had he become?
Well, he was Vadars Keinricht. He was loud, boisterous and brazen. His strength exceeded the average Killright and he was a dark horse amongst everyone but then nobody really liked him. Akio hated him, Uvo was close but he was an adult, his colleague, nothing more, nothing less, Rosner was secretive and Janda was Janda.
He started to think whether these were people he could call his family. He was put through so much, Brinehook, Rosner's secret and now he was stuck in a stinky, caged jail cell with nothing but his own mind and the picture of Wade stuck in his brain that he couldn't get out.
So much hate. Vadars wanted to let it out but it wasn't just hate for him.
It was for everything.
He hated how his life was, he hated Akio for being so law-abiding, he hated Janda for being such a cynical and indifferent piece of crap, he hated Uvo for trying to be a glue guy but ultimately never keeping people together like this phony façade he had created and he especially hated Rosner for just being a captain, a symbol of dependence and leadership, and not even show an ounce of care for anyone but himself and his stupid past.
Everyone sucked. He sucked.
I mean, who was he, right? He had gone to Brinehook to start an actual Desperado mission but nearly got a girl that he had just met to die and almost died to somebody that could've cleaved through him had he not been around Rosner.
His strength, the very thing that separated him from everybody else, had failed.
It didn't feel much real at all. He felt this creeping and unrelenting poke at him that just wouldn't shut up. He wanted to get rid off it, put it away in a box and just find something else to do but nothing seemed to work at all.
This cage confined him and it was of his own doing.
It was because he was a Killright.
Killrights were strange people. They were higher than the average officer. They had the right to kill but ultimately, they had to kill something else in the process.
Their own sense of self.
In this world, people did nothing but lie, cheat, steal and kill. Everyone, in their own twisted way, was a Killright. Having this power, this pin, this weapon that could bring destruction only made his own life more miserable and for damn sure he didn't bring any peace to any other.
Sure, there was Brinehook but... the place had suffered. He couldn't ignore the suffering at all. What if a new evil struck the town? What if something had happen?
Tilly.
The kiss.
It flooded him like a heat wave. That sensation. He wouldn't feel it again for a long time, if not, ever. He took that for granted, acting like a big idiot.
He sat up and faced the bars in front of him.
In his own, putrid mind, he was trapped. He had never realized why so much misery happened in the first place. It was far before the Vitruevice War, far before Death's birth. Why did so many incidents, pain and wronging happen?
He didn't know but it made him hate himself all the more.
Vadars couldn't ignore who he was or what he had become. All the more, he was just another jerk like Wade, just another killer like Feast and just another fool like any other man that walked this ground.
Thinking about it just made his mind ache. Oh, well, dying didn't sound bad at all. He'd just have a lot of lights and this overwhelming sensation of being a jerk would go away.
But, looking beyond himself, he couldn't find a strand of anything worth it. Not a friend, not a relationship, not even a purpose.
The thing that had led him to become a Killright.
Yeah, what was it?
It was...
