Chapter 1:

Miss Witch

The Last Witch

Visix let out a long breath as she walked along the city’s quiet, freezing streets.

The sun had nearly set. With snow falling, not many people were out and about. Although, Visix could still spot a group of kids playing snowball fight in the street. They smiled and waved when they saw her pass by.

“Where are you off to, Miss Witch?” one of the children asked.

“Just taking a walk,” Visix replied with a soft smile. “Aren’t you cold? It’s already late. You should head home, or you’ll catch a fever.”

“But we’re having too much fun.”

“Yeah, we are!”

“If we get sick, Miss Witch can heal us. So it’s fine.”

Their innocent answers made Visix smile faintly.

“Sure, I can cure you all. But it’d be better if you didn’t get sick at all, right? So don’t stay out too long playing in the snow.”

“Okay! We’ll go home soon!” the kids answered in unison, obediently.

Visix waved and continued on her way. A few minutes later, she reached the city gate.

“Where are you going this late in the afternoon, Miss? And in the middle of a snowfall. Wouldn’t it be better to stay home and enjoy the warmth of your fireplace?” the gatekeeper asked.

“Honestly, I’m not exactly in the mood for a snow shower. But my neighbor, Mr. Kale, has a sore throat. I’m out of medicine, so I need to head into the woods for a few ingredients. Poor man would be coughing all night long, especially in this weather.”

“Ah, I see. Well then, take care on the road, Miss.”

“Thank you. I will.”

After a brief chat with the gatekeeper, Visix pressed on. Once past the gate, she pulled a small wand from her waist pouch, waved it, and transformed it into a long staff. She mounted the staff, then took off to the air.

She flew for about half an hour before crossing the border into the neighboring land, arriving at a small town—or what was left of it.

Visix landed in the middle of what used to be the town square. She shrank her staff back to its original form and tucked it away. She looked around, reminiscing.

The wall surrounding the town had collapsed, riddled with holes on every side. Debris from the fighting was scattered here and there, mixed with moss and filth. Most of the houses and buildings had been razed to the ground.

The scene of ruin slowly brought back a terrible memory.

Visix had once slaughtered thousands of people in this town. In the name of the Kingdom. A grave sin she could never atone for.

....I am sorry.

She bowed her head, clasped her hands together, and prayed for all her victims. It was the one thing she could do to ease her guilt.
