Chapter 3:
Vargshimore
I managed to shake off the shock — I needed to react, and I did. I quickly teleported behind the girl. I appeared at her back before she could react, and managed to snatch her magic bag. She spun around as fast as she could the moment she felt her bag was gone. I could see the worry on her face, as if now she was the one who was screwed. Immediately after, she launched herself at me trying to hit me in the face. The wretch even forgot the first rule of every superhero story: always deliver an incredible speech before attacking. I dodged her attack easily — she moved at the same speed as any average human, which told me she had no physical powers. She threw a couple more punches at me, but all she managed to look like was someone operating a puppet with no puppet.
After her desperate and utterly pointless attempt on my invaluable life, she tired herself out. I told her in a tone that was in no way egocentric and was entirely humble:
"You almost got me."
When I finished the sentence and looked away from her gorgeous poker face, I realized all the tiny creatures had frozen in place. Overcome with curiosity, I decided to rummage shamelessly through the bag I had taken from the girl. It seemed to be some kind of bottomless bag. I could feel thousands of those wretched little creatures packed inside — a whole mountain of them, completely static as if they were toys. The texture was unpleasant, so I pulled my hand back out. But as I did, I noticed something different buried in that mountain of disgusting little horrors: it looked like a kind of knuckleduster, but made of wood and with a far more artistic finish. I managed to pull the device out, and immediately all the creatures stood up. That device controlled them. She must have dropped it when I grabbed the bag and it had stayed inside.
It felt incredible to hold that device in my hands — it radiated an enormous aura of power. But just as I was admiring it, I saw the creatures come running toward me again. This time, though, they seemed to want to flatter and glorify me. They told me I was incredible and that I was their king. Even then, I didn't find them quite so unpleasant. They were at my feet and they looked rather adorable.
As I stood there blushing and basking in having such devoted subjects, I remembered I was in the middle of the initiation trial at the best school in the country. I almost let that minor detail slip my mind — but try to understand, no one had ever loved me this much before. The thing is, when I looked around for my rival, the girl was gone. I figured she had fled. I mean, the bag was all she had — she probably couldn't take the humiliation I was putting her through. I didn't think much of it, so I went off to find the remaining mannequins to win. I found two very quickly, but when I destroyed the second one I heard a buzzer and a commanding voice announcing: "Trial over."
I was in shock. I couldn't understand what had happened. I mean, I'd taken her bag, and those creatures were useless without the controller — there was no way she could have found the mannequins and saved them that fast. And besides, I had been watching her very carefully the entire time. It's not like a wooden knuckleduster that controls an army of tiny humanoids had distracted me at all.
I still couldn't wrap my head around it when I heard angry shouting in the distance. It was her, storming toward me and yelling:
"Hey, you miserable lowlife, you filthy little worm, give me back my bag right now, you shameless, unscrupulous thief!"
She looked literally like the angry face emoji — her eyes were practically popping out of her head. When she reached me I couldn't say a word. I just handed her back the bag and the knuckleduster. I couldn't find my voice, I was too embarrassed, but I managed to get out:
"Hey... how did you do it?"
"What you lacked in height you made up for in stupidity. Did you really think you'd beaten me just by taking my bag?"
"But how—" I replied.
"It's true I'm not that strong or that fast, and the bag is just a gift from my family. But I do have some magic — I can generate small portals to move myself a few meters, and depending on the object, I can teleport things from one place to another. It's not that powerful, but it's better than nothing."
"So you're like me?" I asked, surprised.
"Obviously, you idiot," she answered, indignant. "I'm your cousin. Did your dad never tell you about me?"
That hit hard. I couldn't believe it. The first girl I've liked at this school and she turns out to be my cousin. This could not be starting any worse.
