Chapter 4:

The Vanguard's Crisis (2)

Gekireki: A High School Hero's Journey

"That was Hana-chan."

I turned. Kikyō stood at the courtyard entrance, bag on her shoulder, expression somewhere between "proud" and "ready to kill you."

"How long have you been there?"

"Long enough to watch you walk into a four-on-one with your hands in your pockets like you were BROWSING."

"I was helping."

"You were being STUPID." She walked over. Her eyes were bright, the kind of bright that meant tears were nearby but had been told they weren't allowed yet. "Do you know who that guy was? He's HUGE. He could've HOSPITALIZED you."

"He's about 1.2 times my size. People always round up."

"You're correcting me right NOW?"

"Accuracy matters in..."

"FINISH THAT SENTENCE AND I WILL HIT YOU HARDER THAN SHE EVER COULD."

I didn't finish the sentence.

Kikyō took a breath. Let it out. The tears were sent back to wherever Kikyō stored emotions she wasn't ready to deploy.

"You know her?" I asked, once it seemed safe to speak.

"Middle school friends. Her name is Natsuki Hanabi." She was calmer now, shifting into information mode. "She was a sprinter. Really good, like nationals-level good. Got injured last year. Hasn't been the same since."

The pieces clicked. A runner who couldn't run. Energy with nowhere to go except fists and sarcasm.

"The fighting is new," Kikyō continued. "Before the injury, she was focused. Driven. Fast. Now she's just..." She gestured at the empty space where Hanabi had been. "That."

"On fire with nowhere to run."

"Exactly." She looked at me. "Why'd you step in? And don't say 'seemed like the thing to do' because I will THROW something."

"She was going to throw the first punch. Win or lose, she'd have gotten expelled. And she's too interesting to waste on a fight that small."

Something in her expression shifted. The same flicker I'd seen yesterday when I'd accidentally described her as a girlfriend without the paperwork. Recognition. Like I'd said something that confirmed a theory she'd been testing.

"The third lunch is for her," she said.

"I figured."

"She won't thank you."

"She already told me she wouldn't."

"And she won't eat the lunch tomorrow."

"But you'll bring it anyway."

"Obviously."

"Because you cooked AHEAD."

She didn't respond. Just smiled the real smile, the one that arrived slower than the performance version and stayed longer, and started walking back toward the building.

"Sora?"

"Yeah?"

"Next time you walk into a four-on-one, TELL me first."

"So you can stop me?"

"So I can FILM it."

That evening I walked home alone.

The system had been quiet since the courtyard. I stopped at FamilyMart. Different items than yesterday. Green tea gave me +0.3 INT, with a note that consistent tea consumption strengthens the mind gradually. An RPG that promoted balanced nutrition. My mother would have approved.

Home. The apartment was quiet. The Polaroid wall had three new additions since this morning: the rooftop skyline, Kikyō mid-laugh, a vending machine with an empty coin slot that only I understood the significance of.

I sat on my bed. Thought about the girl with the red tips.

The system responded.

[PARTY CANDIDATE IDENTIFIED] Name: The Blood-Flame Vanguard Class: Warrior / Fighter Disposition: Hostile (Surface) / Loyal (Core) Fortune Link compatibility: HIGH

The Vanguard's flames require direction, not suppression.

I thought about Kikyō.

[PARTY CANDIDATE IDENTIFIED] Name: The Radiant-Spring Saintess Class: Cleric / Healer Disposition: Devoted Fortune Link compatibility: VERY HIGH

The Saintess has been supporting the Hero since before the Holy Sword was drawn.

Recommended action: The Hero should recognize what has already been given freely.

The Hero should recognize what has already been given freely.

Three containers. Every day. The third one full and waiting.

The system commented on my stat allocation:

A balanced approach. The Hero walks the path of the Generalist. This is either wisdom or indecision. Time will reveal which.

"Bit judgmental for a system that calls juice an elixir," I muttered.

I lay back. The system continued narrating:

The Hero rests. Even in slumber, the flame of destiny burns within him. Tomorrow brings new challenges. The Vanguard's fire awaits. The Saintess prepares her offerings.

"Shut up," I said to the empty room.

The Hero speaks with authority. But destiny requires no permission. Sleep well, Chosen One.

I closed my eyes. The coin under my pillow was warm. A girl with fire in her hair and no direction for it. A girl who cooked three lunches and wouldn't say why. A system that called juice an elixir and had opinions about my destiny.

For the second night in a row, I didn't want the day to end.

That was new. That was worth something.
