Chapter 19:
I Wanna Tell You About My Schizo Friends But I'm Not Sure They'll Let Me
At some point, when I was younger, as opposed to earlier in this particular episode, I tried to go through all the world's scriptures. I thought I needed something and that I thought I would know what.
Nobody knows what anyone needs.
There were a lot more of them than I thought. You know the main ones and they are sort of intertwined. Moe says that but I already knew. He doesn't like when I tell him the others are sort of intertwined too. Everything is.
Anyway a lot of it is just about control. Telling weaker people what to do in a way that will appeal to them even if what they're supposed to do doesn't.
I found what I was looking for when I finally found my own eschatologist. She set me right.
I thought she was a palm reader. It seemed like the only kind of fortune telling that would be meaningful. I hadn't cut my hand yet. It was accidental anyway, and it didn't cut any of the lines I thought would've meant anything.
-Let me look at your hands, was the first thing she said to me. I thought she said my name but she insisted she didn't.
She did say she wanted to talk to me about my future. She said it was urgent. Not something that can wait.
She said she should've said my name but she didn't know it. She only knew my role in the future.
So that added up to me to a palm reader.
The end of the world is the end of you but the end of you is the end of the world too.
When the sky crackles and snaps it's like somebody pushing into your eyes.
Wars and disease and forced fasting and destruction. Things that are always there ready for the right combination.
Prophetic vision is seeing the future like it's already in the past. Something like that.
I don't say these things. They're said to me, when sometimes I'm listening.
There's always been land wars in Asia, as long as there's been an Asia. There's always been war. There's always been everything even when there wasn't a word for it yet. Or anyone to name it but who made it.
If I could line every word up from aardvark to zzyxcylb I could tell you what it means. It would take too long. Maybe I could cut them out.
I don't name things but I know they're real anyway. But it's easier to think about that way. And it's easier not to stop.
Anyway. I went to the big box tool store for a big tool. It was time to make things right.
A lot of them feel great in your hand, like an extension of your hand. A dead blow hammer is fantastic but it's very conspicuous. But if that doesn't matter, you want one of those instead of a sledge hammer.
Wrenches are good too but they're just fancy metal sticks.
I was looking for something different. I can tell by the way it handles in my hand.
Instead of a hammer head it's got a metal contraption at the end. It makes you look like you're supposed to have it because you obviously know what to do with it.
Hand tools are a lot better than knives. You can lead a hand tool, it's like you're extending your arm in space and in force. Knives lead you. You can cut but then you're kind of pulled in with it.
You know what I mean if you've ever sliced into a piece of meat just the right way.
Bone is different of course.
By the time I had gotten back to the park it had started to rain. I tried to keep my thoughts to myself, keep my plans to myself, formed but unnamed, but they seeped out. And it rained.
Not a little bit like you can't tell if it's just around you or for you or a mirage or something. Rain like it's definitely rain and you probably smelled it before it came.
Maybe I had smelled it.
The park was empty and I was dripping wet. It wasn't crowded anymore.
I remembered looking out the window and imagining throwing Skull and the other one out there. I'd left it open.
Maybe it could wash them away.
Maybe this would be the rain that washes everything away. But all the texts tell me it's a fire next time.
I'm not going to start a fire. I'm not going to will one into existence. I don't want to put this here because I don't want to get in trouble. It would solve a lot of things.
So it wouldn't be fair if it happened. I would get blamed for it even though I didn't have anything to do with it because I benefited from it.
But now it was raining. And it would stop.
Then I got bit by a mosquito. They were back. With their diseases.
