Chapter 1: The Hum of the Sprawl

Dark Ascendancy: Resonance of the Neon Sprawl

Chapter 1: The Hum of the Sprawl

The city stretched beneath Edrien’s feet like a vast, restless sea of neon and cold steel. Far below, hovercars hummed between monolithic skyscrapers, leaving behind jagged streaks of crimson and sapphire light. Leaning against the Academy’s rooftop railing, Edrien let the high-altitude wind ruffle his dark hair. To most, the city was a deafening roar, but to him, the hum was a comfort—it was quieter than the constant chaos echoing in his own mind.

“Edrien! Spacing out again?” a voice barked, breaking his trance.

He turned to find Kael, his grin as bright as the advertisements flickering on the horizon. “Don’t tell me you’re daydreaming about some legendary duel again. Save it for the sims, man.”

Edrien smirked, adjusting his stance. “Maybe... or maybe I’m just enjoying the only quiet spot in this whole Sprawl.” He stretched his arms, careful to hide the lingering tension in his shoulders.

Behind them, Lyric—the tactical heart of their trio—was already buried in his work. His fingers danced across a holographic datapad, casting a pale glow over his focused expression. “Focus, Edrien,” Lyric said without looking up. “Training starts in five minutes. You can’t just float through life pretending the world isn’t watching you.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Edrien muttered. A faint grin tugged at the corner of his lips. Around these two, he could breathe. He could joke, laugh, and tease without the weight of expectations. But the moment he was alone, that weight returned—the crushing pressure of the city and the unknown threats lurking just beyond the reach of its neon glow.

Training began with the standard Academy drills: high-frequency sword strikes, precision footwork, and combat maneuvers with dulled energy blades. The simulators hummed to life, projecting holographic specters that lunged and slashed with lethal, unpredictable patterns. Edrien moved through the digital onslaught with the grace of a predator. Every strike was clean, every parry was calculated. His eyes remained eerily calm, reading the data before the light even solidified.

“Sharp as always, Edrien,” Lyric remarked, finally glancing up from his screen. “But you’re still holding back. Your stats would double if you’d just let your instincts take the wheel.”

Edrien shook his head, deactivating his blade with a hiss of escaping ozone. “Control comes first. Power without control is nothing more than a dangerous mistake.”

Kael snorted, swinging his own practice blade in a wide, flashy arc. “You sound like a walking textbook, Ed! Just swing the sword and have some fun for once!”

Edrien’s lips curved into a fleeting, genuine smile. With them, he was human—relaxed, serious, and lighthearted all at once. It was a side of himself he guarded fiercely, a sanctuary kept away from the rest of the cold, judging world.

But even in the glow of the Academy, shadows were lengthening. And Edrien would soon learn that the darkest shadows weren't lurking in the alleys of the Sprawl—they were wearing familiar faces, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
