Chapter 1:
That month of yearning
I always wondered what's going on in her mind. Short bangs, free-flowing hair that reached down to her stomach, voice sweet as honey, but the way she responded to me always felt so... haughty. Did I ever meet her before? As I was wondering about these thoughts, Saya came up to me, put her dainty hands on top of my desk, and started.
"What is your dumb mind wandering off to? It's lunchtime, let's go," she demanded.
"Yes, yes. Just give me a minute. I want to finish writing these notes."
"Sure, let me just sit beside you in the meantime. Do it quickly."
You could have just left me and gone off. Why does she always want to stay so close to me anyway? Sensing her tone, I could never feel any affection, so it must be something altogether different. Is she purposefully keeping me on my toes, just for some fun? Feels like too much work for that. Well, I can't keep her waiting for too long with my obvious excuses, so I close up my notebook, put it inside my bag, and take out my bento to leave for the cafeteria.
As I left, I saw a slight glimpse of a smirk on Saya's small, but incredibly well-toned face. "Well, aren't you happy seeing my miniature lunch box? I guess this is my limit, since I don't have that much time to cook in the morning. I even made your favourite tamagoyaki this time!" I glared.
She was taken aback by that statement. Maybe she did not expect me to catch her staring at me in that moment. Collecting herself, she said, "Didn't see you as someone who could cook as well, with the way you carry yourself." Again with that tone, slightly condescending while being warm at the same time. Like it's hiding something, but I just can't grasp it. We have been friends for over two years now, so why does she never let me off the hook? I am done beating around the bush. Today, I'll clear up all the misunderstandings that I have with her.
"Saya, meet me in the backyard after school. I have to discuss something with you."
"Sure, just keep it short. Or not," she teased.
