The red emergency lights pulsed like a heartbeat.
Shiromi knelt on the cracked floor, one hand bracing herself, the other pressed against her side. Every breath burned. Every muscle trembled as if her body was tearing itself apart from the inside.
Eiji Kurokawa stopped a few steps away.
Calm. Upright. Untouched.
“Look at you,” he said. “Wasting superior genetics on sentiment.”
Shiromi spat blood to the side.
“Still talking too much…”
Kurokawa’s eyes narrowed slightly.“Your parents made the same mistake. They believed love could override design.”
He took another step.
“They were wrong.”
Across the corridor, Hayato ran toward them, two frightened children behind him.
“Shiromi!”
He froze when he saw her condition.
Then he saw his father.
His voice cracked with rage.
“You did all of this… to children?”
Hayato's father didn’t even turn.
“I did what weak people are incapable of doing. I created survivors.”
Hayato clenched his fists.
“You created victims.”
Shiromi tried to rise again.
Her legs buckled.
No response.
Her nervous system was overloaded.
Project H-04 had pushed her body beyond its safe threshold.
Kurokawa finally crouched in front of her.
“There is one final stage,” he said quietly.“A release protocol built into your body.”
Her vision blurred.
“…what…”
“When survival probability drops below threshold,” he continued, “the limiter shuts off.”
He placed two fingers under her chin, forcing her to look up.
“You become what you were meant to be.”
Shiromi slapped his hand away.
“Shut up.”
But then—
A violent surge ripped through her body.
Her back arched.
Every vein along her arms lit sharply beneath her skin. Her pulse thundered so loudly she couldn’t hear anything else.
Hayato stepped forward. “What’s happening to her?!”
His father stood there.
“Evolution.”
Shiromi screamed.
Not from fear.
From raw overload.
The concrete beneath her palm shattered.
She stood.
Slowly.
Her trembling stopped completely.
Her breathing steadied.
Eyes clear.
Too clear.
She looked at her own hands as if seeing them for the first time.
No pain.
No hesitation.
No fatigue.
Kurokawa smiled faintly.
“There you are.”
He attacked first.
A straight strike fast enough to break bone.
Shiromi moved one inch.
Caught his wrist.
The shockwave cracked the wall behind her.
Kurokawa’s expression changed for the first time.
Surprise.
She twisted.
A clean throw sent him crashing through a steel support beam.
The facility shook.
Hayato stared.
“…What the hell…”
Kurokawa rose from the debris, blood at the corner of his mouth.
And laughed.
“Yes.”
He charged again.
They collided like artillery fire.
Punches split concrete. Elbows bent steel rails. Every movement was beyond human precision and force.
But Shiromi’s face remained calm.
Too calm.
No anger.
No emotion.
Just execution.
She struck his ribs.
Crack.
His knee.
Snap.
His jaw.
Impact sent him skidding twenty feet across the corridor.
Hayato felt cold dread crawl through him.
“Shiromi…?”
She didn’t react to her name.
One of the rescued children whimpered behind him.
“She looks like them…”
Kurokawa coughed, smiling through blood.
“Perfect. They erased your weakness.”
Shiromi walked toward him.
Step by step.
“Irrelevant target,” she said flatly.
Hayato’s eyes widened.
That voice—
It didn’t sound like her.
Kurokawa spread his arms.
“Then finish it.”
She raised her fist.
Hayato ran forward.
“STOP!”
For the first time, Shiromi paused.
Her eyes shifted toward him.
A flicker.
Tiny.
But real.
