Chapter 1:

The island

Vain of piety

The air in the ballroom was thick with the scent of crushed peonies, expensive bourbon, and the sweet, lingering exhaustion of a twelve-hour party.

John loosened his silk tie, the knot finally surrendering after hours of maintaining a perfect dimple. He looked across the champagne-stained table at Jane. Her hair, once a masterpiece of intricate braids and pearls, was now a soft, golden-brown halo of flyaways. She was laughing—a loud, uninhibited sound that had been the soundtrack of John’s life for the last five years.

"We did it," she whispered, her eyes bright with the kind of energy that shouldn't exist at 2:00 AM. "We are officially, legally, and permanently a 'we'."

"I’m still waiting for the paperwork to clear before I believe you’re stuck with me," John teased, pulling her chair closer.

They were that couple—the ones who had survived three apartment moves, two career pivots, and a very dramatic period where they tried (and failed) to raise a sourdough starter named 'The Yeast Beast.' Five years had only sharpened their edges into a perfect fit.

The Inner Circle’s Intervention

"Alright, break it up, lovebirds," a voice boomed.

Jax and Sarah drifted over, looking surprisingly coherent for people who had been leading the Conga line for the last forty minutes. Jax was John’s oldest friend, a man whose idea of a vacation usually involved a machete and a GPS tracker.

"So," Sarah said, leaning on the table. "The big question. Where are you two disappearing to tomorrow? Please tell me it’s not another all-inclusive resort where the most 'adventure' you get is a lukewarm buffet."

Jane groaned. "We actually haven't booked anything. We were so focused on the 'I do' part that the 'Where do we go' part got buried under a mountain of seating charts."

Jax’s eyes lit up. This was his moment. He pulled out his phone, scrolling rapidly through a gallery of photos that looked like they belonged in a forbidden issue of National Geographic.

"Forget the Bahamas. Forget Aruba," Jax said, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "You guys need Tiridunga."

The Island of the Hidden Sun

"Tiri-what?" John asked, squinting at a photo of a jagged, emerald-green mountain rising straight out of a turquoise sea so clear it looked like glass.

"Tiridunga," Jax repeated. "It’s a tiny speck in the Caribbean, tucked away from the main cruise ship lanes. Most people haven't heard of it because the locals like it that way. It’s not for the 'sit-by-the-pool' crowd. It’s for the 'climb-a-volcano-at-dawn' crowd."

"It’s beautiful," Jane breathed, leaning in. "Look at those cliffs."

Sarah nodded enthusiastically. "We went last year. There’s this one spot called the Devil’s Throat—it’s an underwater cave system you can only reach by kayak. And the town? It’s just one winding street of brightly painted shacks and the best spicy goat curry you’ll ever have in your life."

"Is there... you know, a bed?" John asked, half-joking. "Or are we talking hammocks and mosquito nets?"

"There’s a small eco-lodge on the north ridge," Jax promised. "But John, man, the energy there is different. It’s raw. It’s high-octane. It’s exactly the kind of place that matches you two."

The Decision

Jane looked at John. The fatigue seemed to vanish, replaced by that familiar spark of mischief. They weren't the type to spend a week reclining; they were the type to get lost and find their way back by the stars.

"High adventure?" she asked.

"Not so famous?" he countered.

"Spicy goat curry?"

John laughed, grabbing his wife’s hand. "If we can survive a wedding with three hundred relatives, we can handle a secret Caribbean island."

"To Tiridunga," Jane toasted, raising a half-empty glass of flat champagne.

"To the unknown," John replied.

As the DJ played the final slow song of the night, the plan was set. John and Jane Doe weren't just heading toward a honeymoon; they were heading toward the edge of the map.
