Chapter 6:

The Door That Felt Wrong

That month of yearning

The classroom door was open, which felt wrong. Ideally, it would remain closed during this harsh winter but today looked like it would be a great day for me. Having already read ahead in the lecture, I had nothing to occupy myself — which, without realizing it, had turned into stealing sharp glances at Saya whenever I could. At least now I had something to distract myself with.

The cold breeze hit me right on my nape, as my seat is completely in the back, directly opposite the open door. I could hear distant sounds of the athletics team practicing in the ground, empowering me as they give it their all. Looking ahead, I could see Saya focusing on the lecture at hand. She had always been a headstrong girl, focusing on the things in front of her and planning for the future. But what she was currently doing didn't feel natural to her.

I could see her looking back at me from the corner of her eyes, as if she was looking for something important. Our eyes met for a split second, before she quickly snapped forward, as if to say "Oh, why are you staring at me in between a lecture?". Well, I could ask you the same thing, Saya.

After the lecture was over, she came up to me like a Pomeranian running full speed ahead. She took a spare seat and sat opposite me looking into my eyes.

"If you are free after class, can we go out for some time?"

Hmm, looks like she wants to spend some time alone. She looked very enthusiastic with her invitation. The way she started this, looked to me she had been thinking over it for a long time. It might be a tipping point to how our relationship might grow, whether I like it or not, but I cannot take a lazy approach here. There was nothing on my schedule, more like I have a boring life anyway, so I had no excuse to reject her.

"Sure, but I do have a curfew so let's wrap it up quickly."

"Yeah, yeah, I know. Let's go to that sweets shop opposite to the train station"

"The one that is ahead of the closest station?"

"Yeah, is there a problem?"

Yeah, plenty. Not only is that quite a walk from here, there were multiple shops nearby that fit the bill. Why was she going for such an obscure one anyway? Recently, it feels like this girl is not the easiest puzzle to solve. As I was wondering this, Saya stood up and started leaving. She took a quick twirl, as if to show her cute bangs to me, providing some relief in this brazen cold.

"I'll take that as a no, be ready to leave after class ends"

Not that I will have any choice, but I could feel some excitement brewing inside my heart. What else is Saya up to!
