Chapter 17:

Roger

Kitty

"G'night, Marlene, see you tomorrow." Roger shouted over his shoulder as he headed for the door, ready to clock out.

"Wow, I think that's the most you've said to me in the last 75 years." Marlene shouted back, beginning to feel much better after her encounter with the human creature. "I hope it continues!"

"Don't hold your breath," he mumbled to himself, as he hung up his jumpsuit. "Or maybe you should." He pictured her face turning blue as he pushed through the swinging door.

After seeing how poorly Abaddon had handled this whole situation today, Roger felt the need to tell someone of importance how he was feeling about it. And who better than The Man, himself. The Boss. Roger wanted Abaddon's job, after all. What better way to weasel into a position of power.

Roger headed in the direction of the Boss's office, mumbling to himself about how "Someone needs to take care of this, and if Abaddon can't get it under control, it might as well be me." He practiced out loud as he walked.

He passed the Demon Lounge, where he noticed Nigel on his tiptoes peering through the window. Probably staring at Veronica, he thought. He knew how much Nigel missed her, and even though Roger detested the little lizard man, he couldn't help but feel bad for him. It was kind of, sort of, Roger's fault that they broke up.

"Nigel." Roger whispered, in an attempt to get his attention without alerting the Gossip Gals to his presence.

Startled, Nigel turned to face Roger, his cheeks turning a maroon as he realized he'd been caught peeping on his One True Love.

"Hey, Roger, old buddy. How's it going?" Nigel asked quietly, as he slowly backed away from the lounge door, trying his best to be inconspicuous.

"Well, I'm just heading to the Boss's office to talk to him about this 'human girl' situation. Do you know anything about it?"

"Well, yeah, actually. I'm afraid I do. Abaddon put me in charge of finding her and bringing her in for questioning. But I guess I was taking too long, so he decided he would do it himself, only he didn't tell me about that part." Nigel rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. "Anyways, we had her but she got away, and now Abaddon's real mad at ol' Nigel."

"Oh, I see. So Abaddon wasn't successful in catching the girl." Roger raised an eyebrow, figuring he could use this information to his advantage, when he spoke with the Boss.

"We had both tracked her down to Cerberus' room in the dungeon, but she, uh, escaped. Yeah, she's a wild one, she is!"

"Thanks for the info, Nigel. Oh, and a word of advice? Stop spying on Vee. Delores is going to kick your lizard ass from here to the Lake of Fire." He turned and walked away, leaving Nigel alone in the hall.

Roger arrived at the door to The Boss's Office. He rapped his knuckles on a wooden door with peeling paint. After a moment of silence, followed by hushed voices and some shuffling, the door opened and Larry ushered him inside, glancing around the hallway to check for onlookers before quietly closing the door.

"Roger, what's happening? Is everything alright?" Larry asked, glancing nervously back at Gary, who was sitting at a small desk facing the wall, like a child placed in time-out.

"Um, everything is fine, I just thought I might talk to The Boss about something rather urgent. Is he in?" Roger scanned the office for another door that might lead to a bigger interior office, as this tiny room appeared to be nothing more than a closet. He couldn't identify anything that appeared to be a door.

"Oh, you know what? he's in another meeting at the moment. I can schedule a time for you to come back? He's got a calendar opening in about three business years." Gary said as he flung open a calendar on his desk and began shuffling pages frantically.

"Oh, no problem. Where is this meeting? Maybe I can catch him when it's over." Roger said, still glancing suspiciously around the mostly empty closet space, and wondering why this was labelled as The Boss's Office.

"I, um, we—" Larry began to stutter, when Gary jumped in. "He doesn't tell us where the meetings are, it's a need-to-know basis kind of thing."

"Yeah, that's right!" Larry nodded along as if it came up with the idea.

"You two are the worst. How did you two get a job with The Boss, but I got passed over? How does that make any sense?" He shouted as he left the closet, slamming the door shut behind him.

"Do you think he bought it?" Gary asked as they both stared at the back of the door.

"Not a chance." said Larry, picking up the phone receiver.
