Chapter 7:

Ann (Actually, it’s Anthe)

My Life When the World Sleeps

“Oh hi! You must be new also!” Fawn yells at her, swallowing her massive bite of bread.

“Huh?” I turn my head to look at the new person so fast I think I got whiplash. “New-”

“What is this absolutely weird place?” she screams.

“Summer Falls,” Fawn supplies.

“Why am I over here? Stupid DRAGON!” the new girl yells.

Then the bundle in her arms twitches and I realize it is not a bundle, it’s a cat. Sorry, I meant dragon.

“Why am I here? WHY AM I AN ELF?” she screams, disturbing the cat. I mean, dragon.

“One of the perks?” I shrug. “You get used to it.”

“Uh, do you know each other?” Fawn asks, taking another bite of her bun. Oh right- my bun. I take another bite.

“Obviously not,” the new girl yells. “Why did I just get teleported to an elven village? Why did I just change magical species?”

“What do you mean change magical species?” I gape.

“I mean I just got turned into an elf, stupid!”

“HEY!”

“Did you-” Fawn starts, but the new girl interrupts her. “I want to know how I went from the extremely peaceful forest to this elven village and why I’m an elf! I was sleeping peacefully! PEACEFULLY!”

“Wait, calm down!” Fawn wails. “I’m trying to eat my bun!”

“Everyone, SILENT!” An authoritative, booming voice tears through the bakery, immediately shutting everyone up. Miss Fae, the all-powerful baker, has spoken.

“I don’t know, I just wanna go home!” the new girl grits her teeth. “This place is crazy! I have opposable thumbs!”

“You what?” Even Miss Fae is stunned.

“Um, what exactly were you?” I ask. Fawn is busy stuffing the rest of her bun into her mouth, her eyes popping out of her head.

“What do you mean ‘what’? Do elves think all creatures other than them are inferior or something?” she practically hisses. I can imagine her as a cat. I mean, dragon.

So naturally I have to say so. “Were you a cat? I mean, were you a dragon?”

“NO! Are you stupid? I was not a cat OR a dragon!”

“Then what were you?” Fawn screeches, having finally finished her bun. “The suspense is KILLING ME!”

“It’s not fair!” the new girl rages, ignoring everyone. “I used to be- majestic and humble!”

“I don’t think you can be humble and say you’re majestic,” I mutter.

She ignores me. She starts aggressively kicking at the floor. “My legs are- gangly and- long! And I have arms!” she pinwheels them before aggressively face planting into the ground. “AND MY ANTLERS HAVE POOFED!”

“Ohh! Were you a birch deer? The cool thingies from the stories?” Fawn yells.

“I hate having hands!” the new girl shrieks. “And I’m not a thing and I’m not a story either!”

“Well, birch deer are notorious for being extremely aggressive in the old fables,” Miss Fae muses.

I sigh very loudly. “It’s almost like a toddler throwing a tantrum,” I grumble loudly.

“Stop being a jerk! I have- have- fingers! Why are they twitching?” she wails.

“Okay, please calm down!” Holy cow! I mean deer. “You got turned into an elf while you were sleeping?”

“I did! This better be a dream!” she moans. “What happened to the world where elves were myths and I had no appendages?”

“Okay wait. I may or may not be in the same situation as you so PLEASE calm down and let me talk to you!” I yell.

“Huuuh? What?” Fawn yelps.

“I am so confused,” Miss Fae mumbles. “This is beyond my expertise as a baker!”

***

“So you were both teleported from other worlds while you were sleeping?” Fawn asks, her mouth gaping. “Woaah. That explains why So-So was so confused when I found her at the tavern.”

“So-So?” the new girl smirks. “What an un-majestic name.”

“It’s not my fault,” I protest. “It’s Sophia, thank you very very much.” We’re sitting at Miss Fae’s kitchen table. New Girl had to be dragged here on wobbly legs while wailing about her appendages.

“What’s your name?” Fawn asks loudly. It’s typical of her to find out that I’m from another universe and be completely unfazed only five minutes later. Well I mean I’ve known her for like two hours, so who am I to know what’s typical? “I’m Fawn!”

“It’s Anthe,” she mutters.

“Wooah, that's a cool name! Can I call you Ann?”

“NO!”

“Ann. Hi Ann!” I grin devilishly.

"Please shut up.” She glares at me. Woah, that’s actually intimidating.
