Chapter 1:

Scene 1

Itheh - Humanity's Final Cradle

There's an eerie echo that belongs to the sound of rope under tension. This was especially true when you see your own mother laughingly attached to it. It was the same reoccurring nightmare that Abel supposedly already graduated from.
"Abel? Are you asleep?" a voice roughly pulled him away from the nightmare.
Abel lets out a groan. "What is it, David?"
David laughed, "Land ho, my friend."
Abel got up to see the mountainous island. The united governments of different countries called it "God's Island", but Abel knows it by a different name: "Itheh... At last."
"You're really doing this, aren't you?"
"Until I find the answers to my mom's stories I won't sleep well."
"Abel, they're just words of a demented woman."
He knew David was right. Abel's mother, the late Esther, was diagnosed with a severe case of dementia. Of course he did not know better and listened to her many stories with no care in the world. When the news broke that the government had been hiding an island for over twenty years she muttered that name. The artifacts that came back all matched those in her stories. She even predicted the madness that would swoop over all who ventured to the island and came back to the old world. A few years later he would find that scene that would haunt his dreams for years.
"I don't know. Even without her weird stories, I'd still wanted to come."
"Once you cross the red rocks there's no coming back."
Abel did not say a word, he just offered his hand. David hesitated, but he shook it.
"I won't forget you, brother."
"Thank you for everything you've done."
It wasn't David's family that took Abel in. He was, however, welcomed like family in their home shortly after the event. A decade of friendship was eventually forged into a brotherly bond that they thought could never be broken.
"I'm going to miss you. It's going to be really quiet back at home."
"Will you tell them..."
"Already did. How did you think I was able to borrow our boat?" Just as he thought, David always had his back.
Abel went through the pockets of his jacket and pulled out a brand new phone. "Take it."
David's face lit up with excitement. "That's a brand new...!? With touch screen and all!"
"It's useless on the island. Turn it on and BOOM."
David accepted the gift. The first thing he did was make a picture of the two together - one final memory before an eternal parting.
The formalities they needed to share were exchanged. Abel got out of the boat and sank knee deep in the water. The red stone paved the way to shore. But it wasn't "Veilige Haven" that Abel was interested in. He decided that his journey started the moment he arrived.
