Chapter 4:

Crescent and big mansion

The wanderer from Nanoxate

I got briefed by Salonte on what my job entails. So basically, all I have to do is to tend to the garden and clean the house. I won't even have to do anything like cooking, as they already have professional cooks.
I spent the night experimenting with magic, so I wound up oversleeping a little and I came into the slave establishment a little late. Apparently, Crescent, the girl who'll be working as a slave alongside me, is already waiting in the holding room where the magic-restricting collars will be put on.
Salonte ushers me into the room, and I immediately spot Crescent standing among two well dressed men of large stature, whom I assume to be our escorts. In comparison to the men, Crescent looks unremarkable. She has a small body, and she's dressed in cheap civillian clothes. However, her physical appearance completely caught me off guard. She has long silky brown hair with bangs that are cut neatly, sitting atop her forehead pretty. Her face's void of any blemishes, and her big red eyes draws me in.
In other words, she's really, really beautiful. She looks like nobility. You can dress this girl in noble clothes and she'll fit the look perfectly.
I must have been staring too much, and she notices it. She gives me an acknowledging nod, and I immediately jumped at the chance to introduce myself.
"Hello! You must be Crescent. I'm Javean, 18 years old and I'm from Nanoxate! I hope we'll work well together!"
"Likewise. I'm Crescent, and I'm of the same age as you. I'm from Gratearia." She replies with confidence, looking straight into my eyes. She didn't seem to be fazed at all to learn my place of origin, unlike most other I met here in Dooratias. Maybe it's because Salonte had already told her about it?

"Javean, come here." One of the escorts called for me, and he handed the magic-restraining collar to me.

Contrary to my expectations, it fits perfectly on my neck, and it doesn't even feel the slightest of uncomfortable. I do feel my Magic potential being lowered greatly, though.

The men prompt us to move out, and we tagged along with them outside the building to head towards where we will be working.

Judging from looks, I assumed that Crescent would be more of a reserved person, but she's anything but that. Her gaze's fixated on me as we walk the streets, and she initiated conversation in no time.

"Nanoxate, huh.. You must be pretty good at magic then, Javean?" She maintains the confident tone she used back in the holding room.

"Eh, not really. I'm kind of a deviant in Nanoxate.. I used swords in combat and my magical abilities are limited. I wasn't really popular with the authorities and such back there due to that."
It feels really nice to finally be able to talk to someone like this.. A beautiful girl being a huge plus. It has been really mentally tiring for me ever since I left the Nanoxate engulfed in inferno.. I haven't really got a chance to catch my breath.
Her face brightens up a little, akin to a child that's excited by interesting conversation. However, she maintains the same composure in her tone, speaking with a confident voice.

"You know about Gratearia, right? We're the town that specializes in healing magic. It's kind of ironic how healing's all about helping others with the healer's pure and kind heart.. I was never good using healing magic, and I realized as I grew older that I could apply my healing magic really well in creating remedies using plants. But the adults in Gratearia never accepted that and I received a lot of criticism for shying away from our traditional healing magic." The spark in her eyes grow, probably excited by the fact that she got to meet someone like her.
"You're the first person I have ever met that's in the same boat as me.." I smiled at her in reply to what she said.
Speaking of similarities, she has no surname too.. Does that mean she's an orphan, too?
The guards stop walking all of a sudden and we follow in kind. I turn my attention from Crescent to what's in front of us, and an absurdly out of place mansion stands before us, it's grand size and white colour standing out from all the dull buildings that surrounds it. I can already see the garden, it being a part of the front yard. The path to the entrance of the mansion is decorated with large statues of fierce warriors, which I assume is war heroes of Dooratias in the past.
"I have never seen a house so grand in my life... Not even back in Nanoxate in the wealthy areas.." The words slip out of my mouth, the mansion absolutely leaving me in astonishment.
I look over my shoulder, and surprisingly, Crescent looks just as calm as she is before we arrived. She smiles at me, to acknowledge me again.
The escorts turn to face us for the first time.
"The owner of this mansion is a famous writer, Zam Curfate. He already has slaves who are working with him long term, so please coordinate your work with them. We'll be taking our leave now. All you have to do is to give a knock at the entrance, and introduce yourselves. He have already been informed of your arrival today."
The escorts leave and we move forward towards the entrance. I gulp anxiously, this being the first time I ever enter a place owned by someone wealthy. Crescent maintains her confident smile as we inch closer towards the entrance.
At least I have this girl with me.. She gives off an impression of being a nice person so far, so I hope she'll be pleasant to work with and we can build a good relationship..
And so we continue down the path with the entrance feeling like it takes an eternity to reach..
