Chapter 3:

Big Bro

Mr. Werewolf & Ms. Vampire

The morning following Sora Kohaku’s outrageous, unblinking declaration had been an absolute exercise in mental chaos for Yuki Hinote. She had barely slept, her mind trapped in a relentless loop of his deep voice saying that single, world-shattering word: Yes. He had claimed to be her boyfriend without a single trace of hesitation, leaving her entire household in a state of celebratory confusion managed entirely by her ecstatic Mom.

By the time the next afternoon rolled around, Yuki was determined to corner him at school and demand an explanation. But Saturday arrived, and before she could even formulate a proper plan of confrontation, the front doorbell of the Hinote residence rang.

Yuki opened the door, only to find the towering figure of Sora standing on her porch. His messy, dark-gray hair caught the bright afternoon light, and his crimson eyes blinked down at her with that same infuriatingly calm, oblivious expression. In his right hand, he held a sleek, minimalist box tied with a silk ribbon, bearing the elegant, gold-embossed logo of Amber's Bakery.

Commonly referred to by those in high-society circles simply as Amber Bakery, the establishment was legendary. Nestled in a quiet, exclusive district away from the bustling tourist crowds, it was a notorious hotspot for the incredibly wealthy to hang out and indulge in artisanal treats. The prices were astronomical, the kind of place where a single pastry cost more than an average student’s weekly lunch budget. Sora held the luxury box casually, swinging it slightly as if he had just picked up a cheap pack of convenience store buns. He didn't intend to hide where it came from, nor did he boast about it; he simply presented it forward with a blunt, straightforward gesture.

"Hey, Hinote-san," Sora said, his voice smooth and even. "I had some extra time, so I brought over some pastries. Is your Mom home?"

Yuki stared at the expensive box, then up at his face, her mind momentarily stalling. "My Mom isn't home right now. She went out to handle some community district errands," she answered mechanically, her voice tightly controlled. She crossed her arms, her icy blue hair shifting over her shoulders. "Kohaku-kun, what exactly are you doing here? And why did you buy something from Amber Bakery? That place is-"

"Who's at the door, Big Sis?"

A small voice interrupted her from the hallway. A young boy with messy, soft brown hair and bright, curious brown eyes peeked out from behind Yuki’s waist. It was Akasuke Hinote, Yuki’s younger brother. At eleven years old, he was exactly five years younger than his sixteen-year-old sister, and he possessed none of her frosty, intimidating aura. He looked like an ordinary, energetic kid, wearing a simple t-shirt and shorts.

As soon as Akasuke’s brown eyes locked onto Sora, the boy froze, his gaze traveling up Sora’s impressive height, taking in his sharp red eyes and effortlessly cool appearance.

Sora didn't skip a beat. Instead of acting awkward or distant around a strange kid, his entire demeanor softened. He crouched down to Akasuke's eye level, balancing the luxury pastry box on his knee, a completely genuine, friendly smile breaking through his usual expressionless face.

"Hey there," Sora said warmly, extending the box toward the boy. "You must be Akasuke. I'm Sora Kohaku. I brought some sweets from a nice bakery. Why don't you open it up and pick out whichever pastry you want first?"

Akasuke’s eyes went completely wide. He looked at the beautiful assortment of tarts, éclairs, and delicately layered cakes resting inside the box. Then, he looked back up at Sora, his young mind instantly deciding that this tall, handsome older guy with the dark-gray hair was the coolest person he had ever met in his life.

"Wow... thank you, Big Bro!" Akasuke cheered, completely bypassing any formal introductions as he eagerly pointed to a rich chocolate mousse cake.

Yuki’s left eyebrow twitched violently. "Big Bro?" she repeated, her voice dropping a fraction of a degree. A wave of mild irritation washed over her. Big Bro? He’s been in our lives for less than twenty-four hours, and my brother is already giving away familial titles?

"Kohaku-kun, don't encourage him," Yuki grumbled, closing the front door behind Sora as he stepped inside. "And Akasuke, don't just call people 'Big Bro' when you've only just met them."

"But he brought chocolate cake, Big Sis! And he looks super cool," Akasuke defended himself, already happily carrying the selected plate over to the low table in the living room.

Despite her lingering annoyance over the whole 'boyfriend' misunderstanding from the previous day, Yuki couldn't help but feel a strange sense of calm wash over her as she watched the two of them. Sora sat cross-legged on the tatami mat, entirely unbothered by Akasuke’s relentless barrage of questions about his high school, what sports he played, and how he got his hair to look like that. Sora answered every single question with immense patience, laughing softly at the kid's enthusiasm and offering him the best pieces of the remaining pastries.

He was incredibly, undeniably good with kids. There was a natural, protective warmth radiating from him that felt deeply genuine.

Yuki took a small sip of her green tea, her golden-brown eyes tracking Sora’s movements. The contrast between his intimidating, visual peak appearance and his gentle demeanor around her brother was striking. It made her chest feel oddly tight.

"You're surprisingly good with kids, Kohaku-kun," Yuki commented quietly, setting her teacup down on the wooden table. "Do you have a sibling?"

Sora turned his red eyes toward her, shaking his head slightly. "No, I'm an only child. My house is usually pretty quiet," he admitted, a brief flash of wistful sincerity crossing his face. "But... I've always wished I had a younger sibling. Someone to look after, you know?"

Akasuke stuffed another forkful of cake into his mouth. Yuki felt a strange, unbidden flutter in her heart. She looked away quickly, focusing on the empty plate in front of her to hide the faint tint of color rising on her cheeks.

"I see," Yuki murmured, sliding open her chair as she stood up from the table. "Excuse me for a moment. I need to use the restroom."

As Yuki walked down the quiet hallway, Sora finished up the last bite of his pastry. He noticed that a small dollop of the sweet, sticky vanilla cream from one of the eclairs had gotten onto the side of his thumb and palm.

"Hey, Akasuke, I'm just going to wash my hands real quick, alright?" Sora said, standing up.

"Sure thing, Big Bro!" the boy chimed back, completely absorbed in a comic book now.

Sora stepped out into the hallway and walked toward the bathroom area. The Hinote household was a beautiful blend of traditional and modern architecture, with a long, polished wooden corridor leading to the washrooms. As he approached the door to the restroom, he noticed it wasn't fully latched. It was cracked open by a few inches, a warm beam of light spilling out onto the darker hallway floorboards.

Assuming Yuki had already finished or was in a completely separate section of the washroom stalls, Sora gently pushed the door open to reach the communal sink and mirror area.

The door glided open without a sound.

Inside, standing directly in front of the large, brightly lit mirror, was Yuki. She was leaning forward, her hands resting tightly against the edges of the porcelain sink. Her head was tilted upward, her mouth slightly agape as she stared intensely at her own reflection.

Sora’s footsteps halted instantly. His red eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated shock.

Yuki’s lips were pulled back, and protruding clearly from her upper gums were two sharp, elongated, pristine white fangs. They were distinct and unmistakable, gleaming sharply under the overhead bathroom lights, extending well past her lower lip. Her fingers were raised toward her mouth, carefully pressing against the base of the sharp teeth as if she were trying to adjust them, or forcefully push them back into place after they had unexpectedly popped out.

The subtle shift in the air pressure from the door opening made Yuki freeze.

Slowly, her head snapped toward the doorway. Her striking brown eyes locked directly onto Sora’s paralyzed form. A look of absolute, soul-crushing terror washed over her pale face.

In a violent, panicked reflex, she gasped, her hands dropping from her face as she forcefully wrenched her jaw shut. A sharp, audible click echoed in the quiet room as she retracted the fangs entirely, hiding them behind her lips within a fraction of a second, trying desperately to pretend that nothing had happened.

But the room remained dead silent.

Yuki’s chest heaved with heavy, terrified breaths, her golden eyes trembling as she stared at him, her entire cool facade completely shattered into a million pieces. It was too late. The retraction had been fast, but Sora’s sharp, predatory reflexes had already caught every single detail. The image of those long, dangerous, supernatural fangs was burned permanently into his mind.
