Chapter 22:

The Heart

Story of My Life: Revenge or Love?

The underground facility groaned as chunks of concrete fell from the ceiling.
Emergency lights flickered wildly.
Somewhere in the distance, an automated voice echoed through the corridors.
"Warning. Structural integrity at 42%."
"Emergency protocol initiated."
Shiromi stood between Eiji and the frightened children.
Blood trickled from a cut above her eyebrow, but her eyes were steady.
This time, she wasn't fighting for revenge.
She was protecting someone.
Eiji slowly removed his torn black coat.
Underneath, countless scars covered his arms and chest. Thin surgical lines crisscrossed his skin like a map.
Shiromi's expression hardened.
"They experimented on you too..."
Eiji glanced down at the scars.
"They didn't experiment on me."
He looked back at her.
"I volunteered."
Silence.
Hayato couldn't hide his disbelief.
"You... chose this?"
Eiji nodded.
"I was dying."
His voice remained calm.
"I had an incurable disease. Project H gave me another life."
He clenched his fist.
"It gave me strength... purpose... a future."
Shiromi frowned.
"So you decided everyone else should suffer too?"
"No."
His answer came instantly.
"I decided humanity needed to evolve."
Across the room, Hayato helped the rescued children toward an emergency exit.
One little girl tugged on his sleeve.
"Big brother..."
He knelt beside her.
"What's wrong?"
She pointed toward a large reinforced door at the end of the laboratory.
"There are more..."
Hayato froze.
"More children?"
She nodded.
"They're asleep."
His heart sank.
Dozens...
Maybe hundreds.
Meanwhile, Shiromi and Eiji slowly circled each other.
Neither attacked.
Not yet.
"You know," Eiji said quietly, "I watched you grow."
Shiromi didn't respond.
"Every training session."
"Every injury."
"Every victory."
"You became stronger than every prediction."
She felt sick.
"You treated me like data."
"I treated you like hope."
Shiromi's jaw tightened.
"You murdered my family."
Eiji closed his eyes briefly.
"They were good people."
That answer shocked her.
"They loved you."
"Then why?"
Eiji opened his eyes.
"Because they refused to surrender you."
The words struck harder than any punch.
"They tried to escape the project."
"They wanted you to grow up as a normal girl."
"I warned them."
"They wouldn't listen."
Hayato, listening from across the room, stopped walking.
For the first time...
Eiji sounded genuinely regretful.
"I gave them one last chance."
"They chose you."
Shiromi's fists shook.
"My parents..."
"They died protecting me."
Eiji nodded once.
"Yes."
The silence was broken by another alarm.
"Core Reactor Online."
"Project H Central Intelligence Activated."
Every monitor in the laboratory suddenly lit up.
One sentence appeared on every screen.

BEGIN FINAL EVALUATION
The lights switched from red...
...to white.
A new voice filled the facility.
Not Dr. Shinohara.
Not Eiji.
Cold.
Mechanical.
Emotionless.
"Welcome back, Subjects."
Everyone froze.
Even Eiji.
His eyes widened.
"...No."
The voice continued.
"Director authorization confirmed."
"Commencing Project H: Phase Two."
Eiji whispered under his breath,
"...He's alive."
Shiromi stared at him.
"Who?"
Eiji looked toward the ceiling with an expression she had never seen before.
Fear.
"The man who created Project H."
