Chapter 26:
That month of yearning
The first question was easy enough that my pencil moved before I finished reading it, but Saya's eraser kept scraping two desks away. Her posture was a bit hunched, but maybe she was trying to focus a bit.
I gaze over the number of questions and the time remaining. The questions were close enough to what we revised yesterday, so I think she should be fine today. But after a glance towards Saya's direction, my confidence nosedived.
She had completely abandoned her weapon towards the side of the dominant question paper. She bent deeply over the paper, looking like she will take a dive inside the questions. After a while, she let her head roll and lay on the table. Oh well, looks like it will be a hard one for her.
I decide to attend to my paper first. A question on past participle. Well, that's easy. I take some more time to verify the answer anyway, and soon after I circle the answer. And that's two down.
My focus was jolted again by someone just two desks away. Saya was rubbing through the paper like anything, maybe the pressure was getting to her? Actually, it looked like she was just second guessing her answers a lot. She circled one, rubbed the answer, and then did it again. It was actually pretty funny that even without showing her face I could just understand her.
Her shoulders were droopy though, like they lacked the energy to hold their weight. Did she miss out on sleep again? Her habit of overthinking really backfires in these scenarios.
I came back to my paper, trying to regain my composure. I read the question, a simple true or false. But mistakenly I circled the reverse of what I wanted to do. That ... was weird. I quickly corrected my mistake. Okay, maybe I am getting a bit worried about Saya.
But to my surprise, she seemed calm now. She straightened her paper, and appeared deeply thoughtful, as if she was remembering something from before. It was pretty comical how she showed all kinds of expressions through this exam, but seeing her at peace was the best. It appeared as if she regained her composure, and should be fine now. Though that thinking face really didn't suit her.
Seeing that time was running out now, I quickly resolved the remaining questions which were quite easier than the rest. Light at the end of the tunnel, I suppose?
I took another look at my answers, only to notice that misanswered question again. I had marked it pretty hard in confidence, but after realizing my mistake I tried to correct it. But, once marked, the lines were still there. Just a bit faint for the eyes to notice. Except to the one person who made the mistake. But as long as I corrected it, it shouldn't be a problem right? I pondered over that thought as the bell rang to signal the end of this test.
