Chapter 12:
Master of the Cosmos: Dimension Chaos
The ship hung in the sky like a wound.
Xen stared up at it, his dimensional sense screaming warnings that his conscious mind could barely process. The vessel was vast—larger than any structure he'd ever seen, larger than the city itself. Its surface was a shifting mosaic of dimensional energy, constantly rippling and reforming, as if it were alive.
They built this. The cooperators built this with the dimensional ocean's help.
They've been preparing for this moment. Waiting for it.
And now they're here.
"Xen, what do we do?" Valeria's voice was tight with fear, but there was steel beneath it. "We can't fight that thing. It's too big."
"We don't have a choice." His voice was cold, his mind already racing through possibilities. "We fight, or we die. And I'm not ready to die."
He turned to Captain Vance, his orders sharp and precise. "Evacuate the non-combatants to the deepest tunnels. Set up defensive positions at all entrances. I want every weapon we have ready to fire."
"And if they break through?"
"Then we fight them in the tunnels. We make them pay for every inch of ground."
Captain Vance nodded grimly and hurried off to carry out his orders. Xen turned back to the ship, his eyes narrowing as he studied its movements.
It's not attacking. Not yet. It's waiting for something.
Or someone.
"Valeria, stay close to me," he said quietly. "I have a feeling we're about to have visitors."
[WARNING: DIMENSIONAL TRANSPORT DETECTED]
[SOURCE: COOPERATOR FLEET]
[DESTINATION: BASE - SURFACE]
[ESTIMATED ARRIVAL: 2 MINUTES]
[THREAT LEVEL: EXTREME]
[RECOMMENDATION: PREPARE FOR BOARDING]
The beam of light descended from the ship, its glow so bright that Xen had to shield his eyes. When it faded, a group of figures stood at the edge of the crater.
They were human—or had been, once. Their bodies were twisted by dimensional energy, their skin pale and faintly luminescent. Their eyes glowed with the same sickly light that marked the rift-touched.
And at their head stood a figure that Xen recognized.
Gao Yang.
But he was different now. Transformed. His body was encased in a suit of dimensional armor that pulsed with the same energy as the ship above. His face was hidden behind a mask, but his eyes—his eyes burned with a hatred that was almost palpable.
"Xen," he said, his voice distorted by the armor. "We meet again."
Xen stepped forward, his hand on the engine. "Gao Yang. I should have killed you when I had the chance."
"You should have." Gao Yang's voice was cold, mocking. "But you didn't. And now it's too late."
"Too late for what?"
"Too late to stop what's coming. Too late to save your precious alliance." Gao Yang gestured to the ship above. "I've been busy since our last encounter. I've been building. Preparing. Gathering power."
"Power to do what?"
"To take back what's mine. The engine. The city. The world." Gao Yang's eyes burned brighter. "And then, to take the dimensional ocean itself. To become its master."
Xen laughed—a harsh, bitter sound. "You're insane. You can't control the dimensional ocean. It controls you."
"Maybe. But I'm not the one who's going to be controlled." Gao Yang raised his hand, and the dimensional energy around him surged. "I'm the one who's going to win."
[HOSTILE: GAO YANG - RANK: TRANSCENDENT]
[THREAT LEVEL: EXTREME]
[ENERGY: UNKNOWN]
[POTENTIAL: UNKNOWN]
[RECOMMENDATION: AVOID DIRECT CONFRONTATION]
[RECOMMENDATION: USE TACTICAL ADVANTAGES]
Xen read the system's assessment and felt a cold certainty settle over him.
He's stronger than before. Much stronger. The dimensional ocean has been feeding him power, transforming him into something beyond human.
I can't beat him in a straight fight. I need to be smarter.
"Gao Yang," he said, his voice calm. "Let's talk."
"Talk?" Gao Yang laughed. "Why would I want to talk?"
"Because I have something you want. The engine. And I'm willing to make a deal."
Gao Yang's eyes narrowed. "A deal? What kind of deal?"
Xen stepped forward, the engine pulsing in his hands. "You want the engine. I want the safety of my people. If you let them go—if you promise to leave them alone—I'll give you the engine."
"Xen, no!" Valeria grabbed his arm, her eyes desperate. "You can't! If he gets the engine—"
"I know what I'm doing," Xen said quietly. "Trust me."
She stared at him for a long moment, then slowly released his arm.
Gao Yang studied Xen, his eyes calculating. "You're lying. You'd never give up the engine."
"Maybe. But I'm willing to make the offer. The question is whether you're willing to accept it."
Gao Yang was silent for a long moment. Then, slowly, he began to laugh.
"You're clever, I'll give you that. But not clever enough." He raised his hand, and the dimensional energy around him surged. "I don't need to make deals with you. I can just take what I want."
[COMBAT INITIATED]
[HOSTILE: GAO YANG - TRANSCENDENT]
[THREAT LEVEL: EXTREME]
[ENERGY: 67/100]
[RECOMMENDED APPROACH: EVASIVE]
[RECOMMENDED APPROACH: USE THE ENGINE]
Gao Yang attacked without warning, his dimensional energy forming a blade of pure light that sliced toward Xen. Xen dove to the side, feeling the blade pass within inches of his face.
He's fast. Faster than before. I need to—
"Valeria, get everyone back!" he shouted, rolling to his feet. "I'll hold him off!"
"Xen, you can't—"
"GO!"
She ran, pulling the other survivors with her. Xen turned back to Gao Yang, the engine blazing in his hands.
"Is this really what you want?" he asked, his voice cold. "To fight me? To destroy everything we've built?"
"What I want is power," Gao Yang said, his voice filled with hunger. "And I'll do whatever it takes to get it."
[ABILITY ACTIVATED: DIMENSIONAL SHIELD]
[EFFECT: CREATE A BARRIER OF DIMENSIONAL ENERGY]
[DURATION: UNLIMITED (CONSCIOUS MAINTENANCE)]
[ENERGY COST: 10 UNITS PER SECOND]
[CAUTION: PROLONGED USE WILL DRAIN ENERGY]
Xen raised his hand, and a shimmering barrier appeared between him and Gao Yang. The dimensional energy blade struck it, sending sparks flying in all directions.
"You can't hide behind that forever," Gao Yang snarled, attacking again.
"I don't need to hide forever. I just need to hide long enough." Xen reached deep into the engine, feeling its power surge through him. "Long enough to find a way to stop you."
"You can't stop me. I'm too powerful. I'm too—"
"You're too arrogant. That's your weakness." Xen smiled—a cold, predatory smile. "And I'm going to exploit it."
[ENERGY DRAIN: CRITICAL]
[SHIELD STABILITY: 34%]
[GAO YANG - STATUS: ADVANCING]
[RECOMMENDATION: CHANGE TACTICS]
[RECOMMENDATION: RETREAT]
Xen felt the shield beginning to crumble, felt Gao Yang's power pressing against it like a tidal wave.
I can't hold him. He's too strong.
But I don't need to hold him. I just need to slow him down.
He let the shield fall, and as Gao Yang lunged forward, expecting to find a vulnerable enemy, Xen was already moving. He used the engine's power to enhance his speed, moving faster than any human should be able to move.
He struck Gao Yang's side, the engine's energy blazing through his hands. The impact sent the armored figure staggering.
"What?" Gao Yang's voice was filled with disbelief. "How did you—"
"I told you. You're arrogant." Xen struck again, and again, each blow fueled by the engine's power. "You underestimate me. You always have."
Gao Yang recovered, his dimensional energy surging around him like a storm. "You think you've won? You think this is over?"
"No. But I've bought myself time." Xen stepped back, his eyes cold. "Time to do what I need to do."
[MISSION: DESTROY THE COOPERATOR FLEET]
[OBJECTIVE: SEVER THE FLEET'S CONNECTION TO THE DIMENSIONAL OCEAN]
[PRIORITY: ULTIMATE]
[SUCCESS PROBABILITY: 4.2%]
[RECOMMENDATION: USE THE ENGINE]
[RECOMMENDATION: SACRIFICE EVERYTHING]
Xen looked at the engine, feeling its power pulse in his hands.
This is it. The moment I've been waiting for.
The moment I prove that I'm not just a survivor. That I'm not just a leader.
The moment I become something more.
He raised the engine above his head, channeling all his power into it. The light blazed brighter, hotter, more intense than anything he'd ever felt.
"Gao Yang," he said, his voice echoing across the crater. "This ends now."
"What are you doing?" Gao Yang's voice was filled with fear for the first time. "You can't—"
"I can." Xen smiled, and there was something terrible in that smile. "And I'm going to enjoy it."
[ABILITY ACTIVATED: DIMENSIONAL CONSUMPTION - ULTIMATE]
[EFFECT: ABSORB ALL DIMENSIONAL ENERGY IN THE AREA]
[RANGE: 10 KILOMETERS]
[DURATION: 30 SECONDS]
[ENERGY COST: 100%]
[SIDE EFFECT: POSSIBLE DEATH]
[SURVIVAL PROBABILITY: 0.001%]
[CONTINUE?]
Xen didn't hesitate. He activated the ability, and the world exploded into light.
He felt the dimensional energy of the fleet being drawn into him, felt it flowing through him like a river of fire. He felt the screams of the cooperators as their power was torn away from them, and he felt the satisfaction of a job well done.
And then, he felt himself beginning to fade.
I'm dying. I used too much power.
But it was worth it. It was all worth it.
I saved everyone. I saved—
"Xen!" Valeria's voice was distant, muffled, as if she were speaking through water. "Xen, hold on! Don't leave me!"
He tried to speak, but no words came.
And then, everything went dark.
