Chapter 38:

Reinforcement

I was just trying to watch fights to stave off boredom, but that didn't last long!

After running all the way to the Chairman's Office we take a breather, before the door in front of us is opened and someone inside tells us to enter.

The room is quite tall, with huge windows on the back. There was fancy carpet from the door all the way to the desk in the center, where two people waited for us.
As we walked forward, I looked around and noticed what looked like a room in one of the back corners, on the other side of the desk. Finally we sit on the seats prepared for us in front of the desk, as the woman next to it spoke.
She had shoulder length light blue hair, and wore normal glasses along with a maid-like uniform and flat shoes. Her face held a blank emotionless face.

"Gaia, it appears you have some... Noodles still drooping from your mouth."
"Hm? Ah! Sorry! Man, that was so shocking I couldn't finish eating. I never expected such a small waiting time, are you getting better with that?"
'Small...'
"I saw that it was your request and expedited it."
Gaia let's out a small laugh and thanks her.

I go to take a bite of the pizza slice when I realize that I had brought it along, causing the woman to stare at me.
"I uhhh... Didn't know what to do. Sorry."
"..."
"H-Hello?"
"...Yes, feel free to keep eating. There is no rule against it."
After that, she walks up to the chair and says.
"Ms. Chairman, they're here, your break is over."

The moment she finishes speaking she spins the chair around to face towards us, as the girl sitting on it says with a sigh.
"Five minutes... Longer than usual I guess. I'm glad."
She had a hair the colour of the sun in a long braided ponytail with two strands of hair on either side. She wore a coat and a flexible skirt ready for battle. But her most prominent feature was certainly the thick opaque glasses she wore. The moment I see her, my stamina suddenly feels full.
'...If she was in a manga those would totally look swirly...
Wait, what the hell am I thinking about?!'

"So, Gaia, what did you want with me?"
Gaia nods as she puts on a serious face.
"There is a group targeting you."
"When isn't there, heh."
She said that as if she was joking, but her tone showed she was tired.
"Probably... But these ones have mind bending magic. I believe they are-
...I believe some of them are dangerous."
'She caught herself there... Their personalities definitely don't make them that harmful, we should be glad about that.'
The Chairman gets a serious look and glances towards the other woman.
"Go on."
"So far there's been memory control, disintegrating magic, and magic that enrages people. We captured two of them, one is cooperative while the other is... Not so much, but he can very easily be scared into compliance. At least with not breaking out."
The Chairman nods.
"Anything else?"
"We don't have much more info than that... I felt it would be better to get the warning to you first before I asked further."
"I understand."
Gaia nods and continues.
"First I'd request that you take Pride, that's the uncooperative one, make sure you keep a guard on him so he doesn't break out."
The chairman stands up before saying.
"Our prison is top notch, he won't be escaping I promise."
"Then we'd request help in finding where the rest of their organization is."
She walks over to what looks like a room, grabbing a book from one of the bookcases, and begins reading it as she says.
"Some help then? Hmm, I think I've got just the one."

As she's doing it, I can't help but finally ask what's been on my mind this whole time.
"Uh... Excuse me!"
The three of them look at me as I continue.
"Why do you have a room here? I mean there's even a bed-"
The moment I say that both Gaia and the other woman scream at me, telling me to stop, which surprises me.
I turn to them and see them sigh as I hear footsteps coming closer, turning my head I see a very serious Chairman walking towards me.
"You ask about a room because of the bed. Why would a bed be there after all since I can't sleep, is that it? "Why would she sleep when she can't?" That's what you're thinking isn't it?"
I shake my head and try to speak.
"I didn't-"
"WELL I STILL WANT TO! I still..."
Just as she began shouting, tears come to her eyes.
"WAAAAAHHH!"
'Did I just make the Chairman cry...?'
The other woman approaches the Chairman and pats her back.
"Please, go back to normal."
"But he- He mentioned SLEEPING!"
"He did not, please go back to normal."
As that scene unfolds Gaia leans closer and whispers to me.
"You shouldn't mention sleeping or anything close to it in front of the chairman!"
I look at her and whisper back.
"Why?"

Before Gaia can answer, a crying Chairman runs out of the office, bursting through the doors before they automatically close.
"I'll explain."
Gaia looks at her and nods.
"Thank you Vice Chairman"
I glance over to her before looking back.
'That's the Vice Chairman?'
"You are probably wondering why that happened.
Because of an incident early in her life she can't sleep."
"Oh... That's-"
"Do not worry, she never feels tired. In fact, everywhere she goes people around her get their stamina right back to full. She could even cast magic non stop if she wanted to."
'I did feel that way earlier... Wait, what?'
"But... What about that whole thing she said about a five minute break?"
"She may never feel tired, but she very much longs to be able to sleep again. She likes to pretend and have fun like she only gets small breaks to rest and that that's why she can't sleep."
'So she's just playing pretend...'
Suddenly the Vice Chairman leans close to me.
"I know what you're thinking. She may be playing, but she is still very much overworked, so don't worry, when she returns to normal she'll quickly help you."
"T-Thank you..."
She nods and continues.
"No worries."

...

Some time passes, and I notice the Vice Chairman hasn't stopped staring at me, making me start to squirm around.
"Excuse me."
"HUH!?"
She call outs to me, catching me off guard as I almost shout a response. Slowly she walks over to me and says.
"Yes... It is you."
I look around before looking back at her and replying.
"Me?"
"You're her son. I can detect her divinity."
'...?
...What? Huh? Wait... WHAT?!'
"Do you... Know my mom?"

Gaia slaps me on my back with a smile, I look at her before she says.
"That's her teacher."
I spin around, only to be face to face with the Vice Chairman as she had leaned incredibly close to my face.
"I sense a great power in you... Along with something else I cannot recognize..."
'...I guess she doesn't know my teleportation magic. Wait...'
"Are you saying... I have the potential to learn that kind of magic?"
She stands straight again and quickly answers.
"No. I have only had three pupils of True Holy magic, and because of the second, my standard became incredibly high."
She smiles slightly before continuing as she looks up.
"Though that didn't stop your mother from still succeeding in becoming my third pupil."
Her smile fades and she turns back towards me.
"Do not think of this as an insult. I'm just saying you need to train much harder to reach the discipline I require. Perhaps in the future, who knows."
'Discipline huh?'

She then turns to Gaia before saying.
"I sense her divinity in you too, though... Something else as well..."
Gaia looks away from her, and a moment later her eyes widen a bit, before she continues.
"Could it be...?"
Before she continues analysing Gaia, I quickly stand up and ask.
"Wait, what's divinity?"
They both turn to me and the Vice Chairman explains.
"I taught three, but, much like everyone else, each of them learned in a different way. It settled in their brain differently. They practiced differently. In turn, their magic gained a different signature for each. Think of it like a scent, or a trademark sound."
'...A scent?'
I take a gulp and slowly ask.
"What uh... What do you mean scent? How would I-"
The Vice Chairman quickly cuts me off.
"Is it not obvious? She cast protective magic over you. From the looks of it it is a Holy Command. It has clearly been with you for many, many years."
She turns to Gaia.
"You have one too."

'Protective magic? ...This whole time.'

"Though yours appears to have taken some kind of beating some time ago. and is still recovering. So it is not at full power."
I turn towards Gaia.
'Was that me...?'
Gaia lets out a small laugh before noticing me looking at her, and giving me a gentle smile.
"Don't worry little Kazu."
"...! I..."
I take a deep breath and nod at her. Then suddenly, the Vice Chairman speaks.
"What I taught her... Despite what happened, helped save people. I am happy. I am... Glad..."
She then murmurs something under her breath which I manage to catch.
"...that it was not a mistake..."
A single tear drops from her eye, and I can't help but look down, as I too start to feel sad.

...

After what feels like an hour, the Chairman finally opens the doors and walks in, causing us all to look at her.
"Hello everyone!"
"Ms. Chairman, I am glad you are feeling better."
"Hm? What about?"
'She said that so casually with a big smile on her face... She definitely removed that memory from her brain.'
"About nothing of course. So have you done your duties?"
"Of course! I'm the Chairman, something like this is nothing.
I present to you... Reinforcements!"
She quickly motions to the door, making us all look at it only to see nothing.
"..."
She lets out an awkward laugh before repeating once again with a shout.
"I said... REINFORCEMENTS!"

"Oh right!"
We hear a voice come from the door, and from it a new person slowly walks in.
Tall height. He was bald with a trimmed black beard. He wore loose black sweat shorts, and a black tank top with "HERO" written on it in bold orange letters. But the most striking thing of all were the few runes tattooed all over his big muscly body.
He waved at us as he spoke.
"Hello everyone."
The chairman then begins introducing him.
"This here is-"
"Full Throttle!"
Everyone turned to me as I cut off the Chairman.
"I can't believe it. So awesome- Ah!
...Sorry. I'm a fan since I heard he created his own type of magic. And in such an unique way too..."
'...The only hero from out of town that I have a chapter for in my book. Man what a shock, I really didn't expect it...'

Full Throttle laughs and approaches me, shaking my hand.
"I didn't expect to meet a fan! Heck... I didn't know I had fans! This feels great!"
The moment he says the tattoo on the back of his left hand suddenly glows.
"Oops! Sorry, seems that was too much fun there!"
'...Gear 1!
No. I need to focus.'
Suddenly the Chairman coughs, gathering everyone's attention.
"As I was saying... Yes, it's Full Throttle. He will be helping you against that new organization."

Full Throttle turns back towards us and bows deeply for a moment before saying with a big smile.
"Pleasure to meet you. I'll make sure to help you bring them to justice!"
