Chapter 0:
Moonlight Witch
Before the Christians came, when people still worshipped the spirits dwelling in nature, a different kind of power moved through the heart of the Philippine archipelago. The Babaylan existed — powerful shamans who acted as bridges between the world of the living and the dead. They healed, they fought, and they negotiated with the gods to protect those in their care.
Leya is one such Babaylan: powerful, lazy, and reckless. At the spirits' command, she accepts a child as her heir — a girl who will come to be known as Aliya. Aliya arrives already broken. Bound not merely by wounds and grievous injuries, but by multiple curses that seal something dark within her. Someone made her this way. She has promised herself they will pay.
But as her training unfolds, her world grows larger than vengeance. She will encounter a talking pig with an impeccable fashion sense, a blind shaman with an inexplicable terror of frogs, a grandfather trapped in the body of a bird she very nearly ate, and a fellow shaman who becomes her first true friend — people who fill her life with color she never thought to ask for.
Moonlight Witch is a story set before the Babaylan were branded as witches. A dark fantasy rooted in genuine Philippine mythology and history. It is funny, brutal, and truly devastating — a story about the cost of learning to trust again, after the world has already shown you exactly how cruel it can be.
