Chapter 5:

what would happen if...

Emniyetli: Beyond the End of Earth

For my tenth birthday, my mom took me to a sports game that reminded me of Ice hockey. People slid around, slapping a ball with a stick, trying to score a goal; however, it wasn’t a ball- more accurately, it was a fire-breathing monster. Whenever someone hit the monster, it unleashed a fireball that the other team or even your teammates had to dodge. It was interesting to watch; however, I was worried for the goalies every time they made a save, they had to throw it to avoid the fire.

“ Wow, Airis, don't you just love sports? Anyways, this outing isn’t just for sports…” My mom took a deep breath. The game ended in a 5-3 loss for the white team. I wasn' t as interested as my mom in the event. “ Look, today is the day you visit the cleric; she’ll be able to tell us when you’ll awaken your powers. If everything goes well, your fire powers should blossom soon.”

“ Mom, I’ve had this question for a while. But what if I don’t get a fire ability? I mean, Mrs. Drathen said it would be determined based on your personality and other things I didn’t bother to remember.” I looked at her. At this point, we’d made our way from the stadium to the carriage and were now heading for a distant village where all the clerics lived.

“ Airis, how many times did I tell you to pay attention? But fine, your ability is based on your status for its level, your personality for its specific power, and your blood for its element. So there’s very little chance you could be anything but fire; it's not entirely impossible either, I guess.” My Mom said giving me a mini lecture.

My Mom is a beautiful lady. I'm lucky to get her eyes, but she keeps her hair down all the way to her waist with messy bangs that spread over her right eye. “ Okay, but what if it does happen?” I asked because I was reincarnated, not a pure-blooded Vilanova. This was absolutely a concern for me.

“ Well, we would expel you from our house, but we’ll give you some protections like a sword and some cash. It'd be an absolute disgrace for the fire monarchy to bear an heir to any other element.” My mom must have looked up because she stopped herself from going any farther, probably seeing the worry in my face.

“ I see,but I’d still be your daughter, so you’d still love and provide for me; I’d just be out of the succession line?” I asked, trying to clarify exactly what she was saying, if this went how I think she’s saying, I’d be a Vagabond.

“ Well, it’s hard to say; I would still love you, but we couldn’t provide for you. All our resources are used for the uplifting of fire powers; it'd be like throwing dirt in the face of our followers to keep sheltering you.” My Mom sighed, clearly uncomfortable with the direction of this conversation. I felt like she was keeping a secret from me, but before I could ask any further questions, we arrived at the cleric village.

Everything was so clean. Unlike the stadium we had just come from, there wasn’t a single piece of trash in sight. All the buildings were a sparkly grey color. “ Oh, you must be Mrs. Eiliana, and this must be Miss Airis. We welcome both of you to the land of the church, Kilise.” An older lady wearing a white robe and an eye covering bowed before leading us to a big building. It was as tall as Tokyo Tower, if not bigger!

I hid behind my Mom as we were led into the big building. “ On our top floor, one of our priestesses, Ruby, will see you.” The old lady led us to the elevators. We quickly floated up to the highest floor, where we were greeted with a white room. It was purely white except for a little purple wave in the corner.

“ Welcome, my name is Ruby. I can assume I’ll be seeing the kid today?” The purple wave turned around, revealing her face. She was a beautiful young lady with sapphire blue eyes and plum purple hair.“ Yes, my daughter Airis is 10; I’d like to know when she’ll awaken.” My mom pushed me forward towards Ruby.

“ Cool, Airis, I’m going to place the palm of my hand on your forehead, okay. This will let me sense the activity of your magicules. That should give us a timeline for your power awakening.” Ruby sat down on the ground, urging me to do the same. As soon as I did, she placed her hand on my forehead and closed her eyes. I felt some strange force forcing my body to relax, and soon I was fast asleep. I woke up in my mom’s arms; her face was full of worry.

“ What’s wrong, Mom?” I asked groggily, wiping my eyes. “ Honey, don’t freak out, but your body has some unique cells never seen before; you have thrice as many magicules as other people, so it’s accelerated your body's awakening… you’ll know by the end of the week your ability.” My Mom was panicking. I didn't really see the problem with it, though the sooner, the better. In fact, I’d rather it happen as soon as possible so I can know my future with the family.

“ So, what’s wrong with that? Isn’t it a good thing I can get tons more practice with my ability this way?” I looked up at my mom ‘ With or without the family, if it comes to that. “ No, it's so much worse. We can’t just..I mean, you can’t control an ability at 10, especially with so many magicules. You could be burnt by your own fire!” My Mom had convinced herself I was going to die if I lost control of my powers. “ Well, I guess Fraize could move in closer to me that way; if there is a fire, she’ll be there to put it out with water.

” My mom absolutely hated the idea of having a water user close to the center of the family like that, but she understood the idea. When we finally arrived back home, my mom bolted through the doors. She ran straight to my dad’s study. They locked themselves in there, knowing it was the one room I couldn’t get into. Throughout the years, I developed a talent for just randomly appearing in places all around the castle. If this is what we nobles live in, imagine how the royal family lives.

I decided that instead of just sitting back worrying, I’d hone my physical body in hopes of having better control over my magic. It’d been years since I cleared Kira’s challenge, but every now and then she’d come back, and we’d race. I still get left in the dust, but now at least I’m not out of breath running 12 miles.

I sprinted as fast as I could. My goal was to clear 20 within two hours. When I got back from the run, I decided to do some basic pushups and situps to train my core strength. After 500, I ended off running a weighted lap around the mansion. By the time I got in the bath, I was halfway asleep. I pushed myself hard today, but to control this insane power, it sounds like I need to push myself as hard as I can this week.
