Chapter 3:

Flowerfield Sanctuary

A Curiosity Kept

I have never breached this deeply into a terrestrial construct before. I have never needed to; their superficial, outward reactions are always sufficient data to determine my course of action: send them back to the mud-sphere where they belong.

Yet, I cannot read Silas immediately, even after my tendrils map the thumping rhythm of his steady heart and diagnose the chemical balances in his brain. The heart is beating at an entirely optimal, resting rate. Can certain primates manually override their own autonomic nervous systems?

I dig deeper into his subconscious, pushing until I discover a fold in the dimensional architecture of his mind—one that is shockingly as vast and layered as my own.

I peel back the first layer. Maps of plans and branching strategies are laid out like a complex, glowing matrix. Years of accumulated tactical thinking put him leagues ahead of his peers, acting as the ultimate security system for his mind.

I push through the labyrinth, arriving at a highly erratic second layer: emotions. The chemical imbalances of his primate biology. Fascinatingly, these are perfectly mixed and masked with the strategic layer. For Silas, worry is synonymous with planning, and fondness is derived entirely from perfect execution.

I hesitate for a fraction of a second before pushing deeper, past the logic and the neurochemistry.

I am met with a void.

And that is when the resonance frequency hits me. It is like staring into a mirror but turned inward. Waves of hurried, suppressed emotion spiral up my tendrils. I taste an insatiable, ravenous hunger for knowledge. And beneath it all, the crushing, infinite loneliness of being entirely unable to find someone who understands.

I do not dive into the void this time; I am pulled.

I am wrapped inside a vortex of intense, alien emotions. The boundary between our consciousnesses begins to disintegrate, the strict lines of my ancient geometry failing until I can no longer differentiate between I and He.

Before my processing matrices can reboot, the environment shifts. I find myself in a vast flower field—an impossible, biological construct blooming right in the middle of the deep cosmic sea where I usually reside.

Silas stands amidst it, his coat floating in an artificial wind. Scentless petals catch in his hair. As if sensing my localized manifestation, he turns and waves.

I attempt to move my limbs but find my center of gravity entirely altered. I look down at my newly rendered manifestation. I am small. I am helpless. I am... the exact frowning, two-dimensional octopus Silas has doodled earlier.

The mage fails to suppress a laugh. He jogs to my side and scoops me up, pressing my squishy form against his chest. From this proximity, I can hear his heartbeat again. It is erratic and fast—entirely unlike the perfectly controlled, calculating rhythm from before.

"Where am I?" I manage to vocalize, though the sound escapes my new cephalopod form in a pitch significantly higher than my preferred tectonic rumble.

"Inside my subconscious," Silas answers cheerfully. He rests his chin on the top of my squishy head, holding me tightly against him, utilizing the exact grip a primate child uses to secure a stuffed animal.

I squirm in his grip, my nonexistent skeletal structure protesting, "This manifestation is highly undignified!" I mumble through my beak. Silas just laughs and sits down on a comfortable boulder chair, putting me on his lap this time. I miss hearing his heartbeat, but this is not too bad. Then he starts to play with my tendrils, squishing them. I let out another high-pitched yelp of protest. Though it just makes him more entertained.

Within this mental architecture, I am a small, squishy cephalopod being held tightly by a primate.

Yet, simultaneously, my vast external consciousness feels my physical meat-suit in the real world finally dissolve. The tailored fabric and biological flesh melt away, leaving only my true, sprawling geometrical shape. My giant tendrils remain wrapped securely around Silas's unconscious physical body on the floor of the void.

The center of my mass begins to fold inward, forming a dense cocoon around him. Sparks of electrical signals, deep cosmic energy, and looming, protective shadows weave together to form a localized veil over the mage.

Back in his subconscious realm, the sky is vast and a soft blue—gentle and peaceful, a stark contrast to the crushing, dark indigo of my abyss. Silas is absentmindedly playing with my small, plush tendrils, twirling them side to side.

I question the environmental design. Why a flower field? I expect a far more sophisticated neurological setting for a mind as complex as his, though I have to admit the artificial wind settles against my form like a biological lullaby.

"When I'm tired of running my mind, I come here." Silas stops twirling my appendage and pulls me closer for another secure hug. "The constant calculations, the magical formulas, the endless logistics of running the kingdom... it drains me. Yes, even the fabulous me."

He pokes a finger gently into the squishy flesh of my cheek.

"This is the only place in my mind where nothing happens. It is my sanctuary."

A null void. A sanctuary for an exhausted soul. I calculate the probability of my own vast, chaotic existence truly belonging in such a quiet place. But my matrices conclude that the data is irrelevant now.

Silas already has me in his grip.
