Chapter 7:

7 - The Gravity of Rock Bottom

To Bleed a Golden Sky

The descent was not a clean fall; it was a violent, bone-snapping eclipse.

When Valen let himself slip backward into the dark drainage chute, the world above vanished in a rushing hiss of steam and the fading wails of emergency klaxons. Then came the gravity. It took hold of his bruised, exhausted body with a merciless, crushing weight, dragging him down into the throat of the mountain.

He fell through miles of absolute, suffocating blackness. The vertical chute was a jagged artery of iron and stone, and Valen ricocheted off its calcified walls like a broken wooden doll. The wind roared in his earsโ€”a deafening, freezing gale that tore the breath from his throat before it could form a scream.

Every impact jarred his skull, but the true torment was the agonizing unraveling of his inner self. His core was ruptured. The brilliant, pure light of the vanguard that had defined every breath of his life was hemorrhaging from his wounds. Shards of golden mana bled from his pores in erratic, weeping trails, instantly evaporating against the rancid air.

During the chaotic, tumbling descent, his body slammed violently against a structural bend in the shaft. A twisted, razor-sharp brass bracketโ€”one of the heavy clamps anchoring the high-pressure pipesโ€”was protruding from the iron wall.

It struck the left side of his face with sickening force.

A sharp, wet tearing sound echoed in the narrow chute, instantly drowned out by Valenโ€™s choked, agonizing scream. The metal sheared directly across his left brow, slicing through flesh, muscle, and the delicate nerves of his eye. The impact literally tore the eye from its socket, leaving a jagged, weeping ruin. Blinding, white-hot agony flared through his skull, so intense that his entire nervous system briefly short-circuited.

He was falling, blinded in one eye, clutching the left side of his face as a torrent of hot, dark blood poured through his fingers.

And then, the vertical tunnel suddenly ended.

Valen burst through the iron mouth of the chute, falling through a vast, empty subterranean void for several agonizing seconds before crashing into the ground with a muffled, wet thud.

He did not die. But only because the surface he landed on was not stone.

The ground yielded beneath his weight with a horrific, collective crunchโ€”a sound like dry autumn leaves and brittle twigs being crushed under a heavy boot. Valen gasped, his right eye blinking weakly against the darkness. He tried to push himself up, but his hands slipped, sinking deep into something cold, stiff, and terrifyingly hollow.

He triggered a microscopic, dying spark of Holy Light from his right palm just to see where he had fallen. The brief, golden flicker illuminated a landscape of nightmares.

He had not landed in a garbage dump. He had crashed onto a mountainous, sprawling pile of drained human husks.

They were stacked dozens of feet high, spilling out into a colossal subterranean cavern that stretched far beyond the reach of his failing sight. These were the leftovers of Director Kaelenโ€™s grand designโ€”the empty, discarded shells of the homeless, the orphans, and the country folk after the processing machines had systematically wrung every drop of light, memory, and soul from their blood.

Their skin was a uniform, leathery ash-gray, stretched tight over their ribs. Their jaws were clamped open, their hollow, sightless eye sockets staring blankly at the ceiling in an eternal, silent scream.

This was the true Abyss pit beneath the factory. The secret graveyard where Solaria buried the ashes of the people who kept its golden sky burning.

A choked, hysterical sob tore from Valenโ€™s throat. He scrambled desperately down the mound of corpses, his boots sliding against the brittle, interlocking limbs of the dead, his hands covered in the gray dust of their decaying skin. He collapsed onto the damp, slick stone floor at the base of the pile, his body shivering violently.

"Jace..." he whimpered, clutching his bleeding face. "Jace, I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..."

But there was no mercy at the bottom of the world.

The air in this colossal cavern was thick, heavy, and luminous. Here, at the deepest roots of the continent, the raw, unpurified concentration of the Abyss did not look like the thin purple mists of the surface. It was a dense, rolling fog of a haunting, sickly green-blueish hueโ€”the color of decaying copper, stagnant deep-ocean depths, and bioluminescent rot.

The moment Valen drew a ragged breath, the toxic, green-blueish miasma flooded his system.

It felt as though he had swallowed a draught of liquid acid. The raw Abyss energy immediately began to burn his skin, turning his open wounds a bruised, veiny, and glowing green-blue. Inside his chest, his lungs began to blister and liquefy under the caustic weight of the fumes. He coughed violently, spraying dark, corrupted blood onto the damp stone, his single remaining eye tunneling into a narrow pinprick of gray.

Even worse, the toxic mist began to seep directly into the open, weeping wound on the left side of his face. The exposed nerves of his empty eye socket shrieked as the green-blueish rot began to eat its way toward his brain.

So this is how it ends, Valen thought, his cheek pressing against the cold, wet stone as his physical strength abandoned him completely. In the dark. Blinded. Broken. Covered in the ash of the people I swore to protect.

His right eye fluttered closed. The final, microscopic sparks of his Holy Light core flickered once, twice, and then went completely, utterly dark.

His mana was dead. The light of Solaria had abandoned him. The cold, heavy silence of the grave began to wrap around his consciousness, dragging him down into the quiet dark.

But deep within the subconscious recesses of his mind, beneath the layers of grief, betrayal, and physical trauma, something else stirred. It was not the noble, refined training of a vanguard officer. It was the raw, ugly, and animalistic instinct of survivalโ€”the absolute refusal of his flesh to stop breathing.

As the dense, green-blueish miasma of the Abyss flooded his ruined chest, seeking to dissolve his organs, it encountered the volatile, fractured fragments of his shattered light core.

The two opposing forces did not cancel each other out. They collided.

A sudden, violent spasm racked Valenโ€™s entire body, arching his spine off the stone floor with a sickening crack. His single right eye snapped open, the pupil dilating until the hazel iris was completely swallowed by black.

The ambient rot of the surrounding graveyard began to churn. A sudden, unnatural atmospheric vacuum centered on Valen's body, drawing the heavy, green-blueish fog toward him in spiraling currents. The toxic corruption sinking into his flesh didn't dissolve him anymore; it began to bind directly to his nervous system, fusing with the dead, broken pathways of his light magic.

It was a crude, agonizing baptism.

The light had failed him. His soldiers had betrayed him. And in their place, the raw, forbidden rot of the deep earth offered a terrifying, mutated path to survival.

Valen threw his head back, a silent, guttural scream tearing from his throat as the transformation ripped through his body. The agonizing fusion of dead light and raw Abyss energy rewrote his core, birthing a crude, dark magic that had no name in the archives of the Capital: Necrotic Alchemy.

Black, smoky tendrils of corrupted energy began to seep from his fingernails, hissing as they touched the stone. But the most terrifying change occurred on his face.

The raw, green-blueish miasma that had poured into his ruined left eye socket did not heal the wound. Instead, the necrotic magic cauterized the flesh, hollowing out the socket completely and sealing it into a permanent, empty void. Within that dark, hollow space, a brilliant, cold flame ignitedโ€”burning with the exact same haunting, green-blueish color of the deep Abyss.

He was no longer a shield of the light.

Valen slowly rose from the stone floor, his single right eye cold and dead, while his empty left socket burned with a silent, vengeful green-blue light, casting a ghostly glow over the mountains of the dead.
