Chapter 2:
SHIROI TSUKI NO KEN: The Sword of the White Moon
On the first day he stepped through the massive wooden gates of the School of Swordsmanship, the burden weighing on Yamato’s shoulders was not just the Kurunomi he carried on his back, but the toxic whispers of hundreds of students around him. The children of noble families, gathered in the courtyard with their tall statures, striking looks, and gleaming swords, began to laugh as they looked at this short, frail youth entering the gate.
"Look at that," said a heavily built student, nudging the shoulder of the boy next to him. "He's not even tall enough to match the length of his own blade. Is this kid supposed to hunt demons? The government must have completely lost its mind."
"Look at his hair," whispered another with a mocking smirk. "Half of his hair must have turned white from sheer terror. This isn't a playground; he'd better go back home."
These mocking laughs, the nicknames thrown at him, and the deprecating stares caused no fracture in Yamato’s facial features, which hardened even more beneath his black hair with its single white strand. He simply fixed his eyes straight ahead. Though his heart beat with hatred, his face was as expressionless as marble. Their words were not made of steel, so they held no power over Yamato.
However, when they stepped onto the training grounds, things became far more difficult than mere words. While the other students made their swords glide elegantly through the air like swans, the moment Yamato drew his black sword, Kurunomi, from its sheath, the entire atmosphere of the area grew heavy. The second the black blade met the daylight, the uncontrollable spiritual power within the sword erupted like a wild tornado, sweeping the dust of the training ground into the air.
Kurunomi absorbed the rage inside its master but vomited it back out like a monster. The power crushed Yamato under its own weight, causing his knees to tremble. "Ha! He can’t even hold his sword properly!" shouted one of the students in the courtyard when Yamato missed his targets, lost his balance, and fell flat on the ground.
Yamato clenched his hands, digging them into the dirt. The pebbles pressing into his palms stung, but this pain was nothing compared to the fire of vengeance burning inside him. Instead of shattering the bamboo scarecrows in front of him with a single strike, he lost his balance every single time due to the wild, swinging weight of his sword. With every failure, he heard the mocking laughter rising behind him.
But Yamato did not give up. What they did not know was that Yamato already had no life left to lose.
For two full months, when everyone in the school dormitory fell into a deep sleep, Yamato remained alone on the training grounds. From the first light of the morning to the cold moonlight of midnight, he sweat without ceasing. The calluses on his hands burst, bled, scabbed over, and burst again. Those two months spent alone in front of the bamboo scarecrows sharpened not only his sword, Kurunomi, but also tempered his ferocious soul like iron.
During the duels they fought among themselves, the other students had finally stopped mocking him. They were secretly terrified of the uncontrolled, dark, and predatory power that radiated whenever Yamato drew his sword, and they would change their paths just to avoid being matched with him. Yamato spoke to no one; he simply grew faster and more proficient each passing day. The black sword was slowly beginning to recognize its master's will.
And finally, when that great day of graduation arrived, the echoing silence that had gripped the school for two months was completely shattered.
Yamato stepped forward to face the school's most senior, most severe master for his absolute and irreversible official examination. As he stood in the center of the exam arena, the sound of Kurunomi being drawn from its scabbard echoed through the entire hall with a heavy, metallic ring. All the surrounding students held their breath, watching to see what this strange boy would do.
The master drew his sword and lunged forward with the speed of lightning. A fierce, clash-of-iron battle had begun.
As the master’s experienced and heavy blows rained down upon Yamato, the young boy began to display the reward for every drop of sweat he had shed and every callus that had burst over the past two months. For the first time, he did not completely suppress the wild, untamable darkness within him; instead, with the iron discipline brought by those two months, he brought order to the darkness, channeling it toward the razor-sharp edge of his blade.
As the master’s sword came down in a relentless overhead strike, Yamato evaded to the side with a flawless reflex. Kurunomi’s pitch-black blade drew a dark arc through the air. Detonating his inner power at the exact right microsecond, the young boy completely shattered his master’s defense and stopped the tip of his blade just a few centimeters away from the master's throat.
A deep, deathly silence fell over the hall.
Feeling the coldness of the black death at his throat, the master slowly stepped back. He looked at Yamato with deep respect in his eyes and bowed his head. Standing before him now was no longer a "student" to be mocked, but a officially recognized, proven, true "Master of the Sword."
Amid the astonished stares of the onlookers, Yamato slowly sheathed his sword. That final sound of clashing steel echoing in the air was not just the declaration of a victory; it was the first, definitive, and irreversible triumph on Yamato's bloody path of vengeance to wipe out the lineage of demons.
