Chapter 7:

A Chat Among Three

Blood Sugar Rush!

Evelyn's house may be a simple one painted in a soft pastel yellow and a classic crimson roof, nevertheless she tried to make the best of it by decorating every single window with potted plants, the two on the first floor with deep blue pansies, the other two above with snapdragons in orange-pink. A black, thin garden arch with white roses growing up to it from the sides stands in front of the house to welcome whoever the next guest may be. The two friends open the dark brown entrance door, enter, and Evelyn shuts it close behind her again. In the privacy of her own home she opens up her bag at last, making Bee fly out who seems  relieved to finally get out of the dark, limited space. The entryway of her house is held in a simpler, minimalistic design: White walls surrounding an outdated parquet floor that is barely spacious enough for six people standing closely together, plus the little table directly to the right of the entrance. Whereas Bee started to check out the interiors of her house, Evelyn and Gertrud take off their shoes, leaving them on a carpet next to the table. All of them advance to the next room in front of them, showing a small dining table directly to the left and the living room with a middle-sized table and a caramel brown leather couch right behind it. The old-fashioned lamp from the ceiling combined with the matching furniture give off perfect "cozy grandma"- vibes.

Evelyn: Here we are. Make yourselves at home while I bring something to drink. That reminds me... Bee, you would not want tea, right? Would you care for something else instead?
Bee: True, I don't drink that. Do you have honey at home, maybe?
Evelyn: I do. I always get it fresh from my sister, they have their own apiary.
Bee: Wow, cool! Then I would love to try it!
Evelyn: Alright. And Gertrud, you go with fruit tea, like always?
Gertrud: Yes, please.
Evelyn: Fine. I will be right back.

While Evelyn heads to the kitchen opposite to the dining table, Gertrud sits down at its other end. Bee, on the other hand, sits down on the tabletop, taking its size into account. A short and weird silence follows as Gertrud stares at the bee, gradually increasing its nervousness. Then Evelyn returns with a white plastic serving tray, with two teacups and a jar of honey atop of it including a little bowl, a spoon and a toothpick. She puts it down on the table, serving them to the respective places. Then Evelyn dips the spoon into the cream-colored, smooth honey, pulls it out again and puts the spoon - now entirely covered in honey - into the bowl. Seeing that, Bee visibly looks forward to trying it, given the big broad smile on its face now.

Evelyn: Here you go. I thought that a spoon might be too big for you to handle, so I brought you a toothpick.
Bee: Thank you so much! I'm digging in!

Bee, overjoyed, grabs the toothpick and moves it through the honey on the spoon until it sticks, then leads it right into its mouth. The cheeks turn red as the bee delightfully continues to lick the honey off the wooden stick. Evelyn flashes a slight smile as she sits down next to her guests.

Evelyn: It seems the honey is to your liking.
Bee: Oh yeah! It's delicious!
Evelyn: That is nice to hear. I wonder how my sister would react if I told her that a bee praised their honey?
Gertrud: Who knows? But imagining it is actually hilarious. Just thinking about your sister's reaction is funny.
Evelyn: Hehe, you are right. So, now we are in a more fitting environment for a conversation. I would like to do a proper introduction. I am Evelyn, it is nice to meet you. ...Gertrud?
Gertrud: ...Fine. My name is Gertrud, and I regret not having hit you with my flyswatter.

Bee flinches from the shock and stops eating the honey.

Evelyn: Gertrud! Please be nice, okay?
Gertrud: Hrmpf.
Evelyn: I am sorry, she is a bit quirky around new acquaintances of mine. Now your introduction, please.
Bee: Uh, okay... I am Bee. I hope we can get along.
Evelyn: Very good. Then please tell us what this is all about.
Bee: Sure. I will try to explain it as good as I can. Evil forces, commanded by The Dark Queen and The Dark King, have set out to destroy your world. The ruler of my world, The Queen Bee, noticed their movements and sent me - the Chosen Scout - to find the heroes foretold in our legend. So I began to search for them: The Hive Five. The legendary warriors destined to save the world. Luckily, I was able to find one right on time. That was you, Evelyn. Judging by the power you displayed earlier, you must be the strongest among them: The Vanguard. And to protect earth, we need to find the rest of your companions: The Sentinel, The Sage, The Maverick and The Caretaker. Only if all of them are gathered, we will be able to return peace.

Evelyn leans back on her chair, apparently lost in thought.

Evelyn: That means everything weird that happened to me today occurred because I am one of those heroes, and the strongest one at that?! Me?!
Gertrud: Wait. Evelyn, you don't actually believe those weird things this insect tells you, right? They can be nothing but outright poppycock.
Bee: How mean! Everything I just said is the truth! I didn't make things up for fun, the danger is real! Evelyn, you believe me, right? You saw it happening right in front of you!
Evelyn: I am still struggling to think of it as true. But, you see...

Evelyn, still with her black handbag on her, opens it to pull out her glucose meter, still in its new design. She shows it to Gertrud, prompting her to look at the device, puzzled by its different appearance.

Gertrud: What happened to your blood sugar meter? We had the same model, but yours looks nothing like before. Did you get a new one for yourself?
Evelyn: No. That is the point. A beam of light hit it and afterwards it looked like this.
Gertrud: Seriously?
Evelyn: Seriously. Why else do you think I wanted to enter the mental hospital at first? Everything seemed just so... unreal. But you can also see Bee, and my device really changed its looks. Do you understand my confusion now?
Gertrud: Yes, I think I understand what you are getting at. However, that is still hard to believe.
Bee: ...Fine. If you don't believe it, I will make you beelieve!
Gertrud: Did you just drop a terribly bad bee pun?!
