Chapter 8:
The Cold Wicked Witch
I'll become the greatest mage in the world! And becoming one of the Five Mages is just the first step toward my goal."
"Maybe graduate first" I commented.
"Yeah, graduation is another step too. Good point my assistant!" he claimed confidently.
“I don't remember anything about being your assistant.” I looked at the teacher, listening to the lesson.
“And that's why Manipulation Magic is stronger than Defense Magic, while Defense Magic is stronger than Attack Magic…” the professor explains in the background, but all nobles in the class aren't listening.
I glanced at this full of himself, redhead with blue eyes beside me, the lower of his hair tied in a braid. You might ask now, how did I become his 'assistant'?
Well, the story started when I became a famous student for breaking a record in the entrance exam. The student who was late but solved all questions correctly and faster than everyone else, only in the written exam though.
Which of course made me unpopular with them, but this annoying guy started chatting with me every day, talking about his plans to become the greatest mage.
"Rei the lesson finished, let's go to the cafeteria" he's not letting me have any chance to refuse.
"I don't want to eat now. Go alone"
"What are you saying? Eating is an important part of training too" try to understand...
I got up and adjusted my dark blue uniform, then he suddenly grabbed my hand and led me to the cafeteria. We chose a table in the middle and after taking our trays we sat together, eating.
"Also, it's good to think that we both have the same magic type right? We can train together" now he wants to train with me…
"We have the practical lesson now, let's go, my assistant" he got up, returning his tray.
We go to the academy's lower courtyard, where the three professors separate us based on our magic type, and each professor is responsible for one group. I look beside me, the weird guy- Felix, smiles at me.
"Now, everyone in the row has to show me your strongest element" the muscular professor spoke to us.
"I'll go first, I must show these commoners how magic works" the guy in the middle bragged, he's the son of the Marquis Felipe.
He must hate that his skills made him go to the second class and study with us, commoners. While the skilled nobles study in the first class.
He moved forward and raised his palms with a confident smile, then muttered a few words. Then, weak gusts of wind began to appear. It wasn't that strong but he looked so proud of it.
"Good, now next"
I looked around, most of the students are holding anger but they don't have the courage to step forward. Unless one student.
"I'll go next!" He raised his hand, then strided forward.
He raises his hands up, and then a fireball flares to life above his palms, then vanishes just as quickly. Felipe stared in frustration.
"Tsk, commoners" he mutters, walking away.
Then other students stepped forward one by one, showing their skills. Then my turn. I step up and summon a large sphere of water.
"As expected from my assistant" Felix walked toward me.
After my turn, only the nobles are left, the ones who never take these lessons seriously. They only got into the academy because of their parents and that's why they're stuck in the second class with commoners.
"Alright, that's the end of the lesson" the professor announced.
"Let's go together, my assistant!" I stared at his excited eyes, he's just like a dog.
"That's the end of the lessons for today, and you need to go to the dormitory too."
"Eeeh! We can train more!" he caught my hands.
"Alright, just a little."
"I knew you would say it!" he cheered.
"What you need to do first is to feel your mana.” It's the most important step to restore lost mana.
"Feeling mana… like that boring training about sensing nature and that stuff?" He looks so disappointed.
"Yes. It might seem like useless training, but it's the most important one. When you sense the mana around you it makes the boundaries between your own mana and nature clear, so you can control…"
"Yeah, I get it, I get it! So stop. And why are you acting like a teacher now?”
Why did he cut my perfectly good lecture? Kids these days.
After one hour of mana sensing training, we parted ways. I walk through the academy corridors, heading toward the dormitory.
Then, a pink curly haired girl looked at me before walking toward me. Tiring person again...
She suddenly catches my hand, Beatrice, the duke's daughter. Her social skills have made her the girls' leader, not to mention she's the crown prince's fiancée. Why would someone from the first class talk to me?
"I heard about you, Rei Verleit. YOU'RE AMAZING! I used to study everyday but I couldn't do it as fast as you!" she cheers, still holding my hands, her purple eyes glowing.
"Thank you Ms. Valdemar, I appreciate it" but she seems like she did her best too "you're good too, you're in the first class after all."
"If you were a noble your skills would make you enter the first class easily" she laughs "also, my sister is much more amazing and skilled!" Her sister huh.
"Alright, it's time to go, Ms. Val-"
"Call me Beatrice" she interrupted me, I know immediately that I can't go against her.
"Okay, it's time to go now, Beatrice."
"Why? I want to invite you to my tea party" no please.
"No need. Look there, your fiancee"
She turns her head and he is there, the crown prince, blonde haired with bright blue eyes, he looks at us while smiling. Edwen Ellis Cerellion.
"Oh you're right, okay I'll go now. Bye bye!" she waved, heading toward him.
What a storm.
I walked away to the dormitory, after this long day full of excited people, and eating then bathing. I wear my robe, then raise my head on my pillow, closing my eyes and falling asleep.
