Chapter 0:

power vaccum

The Veil-Etched Hourglass: Kith and Kin.

The High Mage of Valerion floated several feet above the ground, surveying the battlefield.

A full moon hung high above, its pale light catching the wisps of his silver hair. A magnificent blue robe fluttered in the powerful currents rising from the void below.

On one side, a colossal chasm threatened to swallow the kingdom. The nearest towers leaned ever so slightly toward the abyss.

Ancient stone walls groaned beneath an invisible pull as cracks slowly spread across their surfaces.

One by one, chunks of masonry broke free, lingering for the briefest of moments before disappearing into the endless darkness below.

A forbidden ritual had gone horribly wrong. Its caster had never realized the corruption it would unleash threatened to bring the kingdom to the brink of ruin.

The king's priority had always been his people. Though he had faced many betrayals, this one was personal.

It left him shattered. Even shattered, he remained their king, and the weight of the crown demanded he endure.

On the other side, an endless army advanced. Their skin had darkened with unnatural decay. Black veins crawled across hollow faces, while eyes that had once held life had become empty pools of darkness.

Many wore faces the king recognized—faithful soldiers, loyal knights, and citizens he had once walked among. Whatever had once made them who they were was gone. Now they marched with a single purpose:

To destroy their king.

The High Mage, the king's most trusted companion, stood waiting for the order with unwavering resolve. The mission was clear.

One would contain the ever-expanding void, while the other would face the advancing army with only a handful of the faithful.

The answer came in the form of a graceful nod.

In that single moment, they made a desperate gamble. Each drew a knife across the palm of one hand before clasping hands, sealing an ancient pact with their blood.

The instant their hands met, both pairs of eyes ignited with radiant light.

A soft luminescent glow spread through their bodies as unimaginable power answered their sacrifice, causing their robes and cloaks to billow beneath the violent surge of mana.

They offered every remaining year of their lives. In return, they were granted the full height of their power until the rise of the sun, their remaining lifespan consumed with the coming dawn.

As part of the blood pact, a magical imprint was woven into their bloodlines, one that would remain with their descendants long after they were gone.

They held each other's gaze as a faint smile crossed the king's face.

"Until we meet again."

The High Mage returned a graceful nod.

"In the hereafter."

Without another word, they turned and walked toward their separate battlefields, their radiant forms illuminating the darkness as their followers watched in silent awe.

Knowing they had just witnessed two people surrender the rest of their lives for one final chance to save the kingdom.

In the grand throne room, the caster sat upon the throne, sedated and utterly unaware of the consequences brought about by the failed ritual. His eyes wandered aimlessly in a daze.

Outside, the enemy's mage continued battling what was believed to be the king.

Queen Relliana had conjured a lifelike illusion of the king, drawing the enemy's attention long enough to cover his brief absence from the battlefield.

Moments later, the king returned. Beneath a crown of windswept brown hair, his golden-brown eyes burned with radiant light as his entire body remained wrapped in a faint luminescent glow.

The violet flames engulfing his sword had swelled to an unprecedented size, burning with such overwhelming intensity that parts of the fire appeared almost black at their core.

It was that same fire the enemy's mage glimpsed from across the battlefield—and in an instant, he understood. The king he had been fighting was never real at all.

The illusion shattered under his fury. A devastating spell tore through Relliana's abdomen, sending her to one knee just as the king arrived at her side.

His eyes lingered on her for a moment—a look of gratitude, love, and longing. Or perhaps, a farewell of sorts.

Relliana gazed into his eyes and immediately understood.

The blood pact had been made.

The king and mage will not survive the coming dawn
