Chapter 9:

Umbra

Umbra

Kaien stood alone in the center of the training field.

Three hundred recruits watched him.

Some were curious.

Some were nervous.

Some were still thinking about his words from the first day.

"I want revenge."

"I want to destroy the nation that took everything from me."

Everyone wanted to know what kind of Echo someone like Kaien would awaken.

Would it be something destructive?

Something violent?

Something that matched the anger burning inside him?

Instructor Owen stared at him.

"Five minutes."

Kaien closed his eyes.

The world became quiet.

The voices disappeared.

The wind disappeared.

Everything disappeared.

Only darkness remained.

At first, he thought nothing would happen.

Maybe he was different.

Maybe he couldn't awaken.

Then...

A voice echoed.

Not from outside.

From inside.

"Finally..."

Kaien's eyes widened.

"You found us."

His breathing stopped.

The voice was familiar.

Not because he had heard it before.

Because it felt like he had always known it.

"Who are you?"

His voice echoed through the darkness.

The answer came slowly.

"We are what you have carried since the beginning."

Kaien looked around.

There was nothing.

Only endless darkness.

"What do you mean?"

"You searched for answers."

"You searched for the shadows."

"You searched for the truth."

The darkness began shifting.

Shapes appeared.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

Figures standing silently in the distance.

Warriors.

Kings.

Soldiers.

Creatures.

People who looked like they came from different eras.

"But you never realized..."

"The shadows were never following you."

"They were coming from you."

Kaien froze.

"No..."

The voice continued.

"This is your Echo."

"Umbra."

The word echoed throughout the darkness.

Umbra.

Kaien repeated it quietly.

"Umbra..."

"Your soul creates shadows of what exists..."

"What existed..."

"And what could exist."

The figures stepped forward.

Kaien saw a warrior holding a broken sword.

A soldier wearing armor from a forgotten empire.

A person standing alone among the ruins of a destroyed city.

Then...

He saw something that made him freeze.

A figure who looked exactly like him.

Older.

Different.

Standing among flames.

The same person from his dreams.

Kaien stepped backward.

"That..."

"Who is that?"

The voice didn't answer immediately.

"A possibility."

Kaien's eyes widened.

"A possibility?"

"Umbra does not only summon what was lost."

"It summons what could have been."

The darkness shifted again.

"Forgotten weapons."

A massive blade appeared.

Covered in cracks.

"Lost warriors."

An army of silent soldiers appeared.

"Dead civilizations."

A ruined city rose from the ground.

"Alternate possibilities."

The image of countless versions of Kaien appeared.

Each one different.

Each one walking a different path.

Kaien stared in disbelief.

"This is..."

"My Echo?"

"Yes."

His heart pounded.

"Then..."

He swallowed.

"Is that why?"

"Is that why I've been seeing shadows?"

The voice answered immediately.

"Yes."

"Every time your emotions reached their deepest point..."

"Every time your mind searched for something you could not explain..."

"Umbra responded."

Kaien remembered.

His uncle's shadow.

The shadows in the field.

The voices calling him.

They weren't random.

They weren't attacking him.

They were pieces of him.

"But..."

Kaien looked at the endless figures.

"How many can I create?"

The darkness became silent.

Then...

"As many as you desire."

Kaien froze.

"There's no limit?"

"There is no number."

"There is only your will."

For the first time...

Kaien felt fear.

Not fear of losing.

Fear of what he possessed.

An ability with no visible limit.

A power that could summon armies.

A power that could bring back things that no longer existed.

"Then..."

"What makes Umbra different?"

The voice answered.

"Most Echoes demand payment."

"Every power takes something."

Kaien thought about Owen.

Broken Chain.

Sarah.

Chrono-Perception.

Seraphina.

Position Swapping.

Every Echo had a cost.

Memories.

Years.

Identity.

"What is mine?"

The answer shocked him.

"Nothing."

Kaien's eyes widened.

"Nothing?"

"Umbra has no cost."

"It does not take your memories."

"It does not shorten your life."

"It does not erase who you are."

Silence.

Kaien couldn't believe it.

Everything he thought he understood about Echoes...

Was changing.

He had expected a sacrifice.

A weakness.

Something that would make his power dangerous.

But there was nothing.

Why?

Why would his Echo be different?

The darkness whispered.

"Because Umbra is not taking something from you."

"It is returning what was always yours."

"TIME!"

The voice shattered the darkness.

Kaien's eyes opened.

The training field returned.

Instructor Owen stood in front of him.

"Your five minutes are over."

The recruits looked confused.

Kaien had been standing still the entire time.

Nothing happened.

Owen's expression hardened.

"Kaien Voss."

"You failed."

Whispers spread through the crowd.

"He couldn't awaken?"

"After all that?"

"Maybe he was just talking."

Kaien stared at his hands.

No.

It wasn't over.

He could feel them.

Waiting.

The shadows.

The forgotten.

The lost.

The impossible.

Owen turned away.

"Step aside."

But Kaien didn't move.

Something inside him responded.

Not anger.

Not revenge.

Conviction.

"I didn't fail."

Owen looked back.

"What?"

Kaien lifted his hand.

"I just didn't understand."

The air suddenly changed.

The temperature dropped.

Every recruit felt it.

A pressure unlike anything before.

The ground beneath Kaien's feet darkened.

A shadow spread outward.

Everyone stepped back.

"What is that?"

The darkness rose.

Figures began forming.

One.

Ten.

Fifty.

A hundred.

The entire training field went silent.

Behind Kaien stood an army.

Not normal soldiers.

Shadows.

Warriors made from darkness.

Some carried broken weapons.

Some wore ancient armor.

Some looked like they had walked out of forgotten battles.

Others looked like they had never existed at all.

Three hundred recruits stared.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Even the instructors were frozen.

Riven's mouth was open.

"Kaien..."

Seraphina stared in disbelief.

"That's..."

"Impossible."

The shadow army stood behind him.

Waiting.

Not attacking.

Not threatening.

Simply waiting for his command.

At first, fear spread through the recruits.

Everyone remembered the invasion.

Everyone remembered the enemy.

Everyone remembered the darkness beyond the Veil.

But then...

They realized something.

The shadows weren't looking at them.

They were looking at Kaien.

Following him.

Protecting him.

The army belonged to him.

Instructor Owen slowly stepped forward.

For once...

The experienced soldier looked genuinely surprised.

"I've seen hundreds of Echoes."

He stared at the endless shadows.

"I've studied thousands of abilities."

His voice became quieter.

"But this..."

He looked at Kaien.

"This might be the strongest Echo I have ever seen."

The recruits stared.

Kaien looked behind him at the army of shadows.

The same shadows that had haunted his dreams.

The same shadows he feared.

They weren't a nightmare.

They were his.

And for the first time since losing everything...

Kaien felt something other than anger.

He felt possibility.

But deep inside...

A question remained.

Why did the shadows call him master?

And why did his Echo feel less like something he awakened...

And more like something that had been waiting for him to return?

The training field had never been this quiet.

Three hundred recruits stared at Kaien.

Not because they were afraid anymore.

Because they didn't know what to think.

Behind him stood an entire army made of shadows.

Ancient warriors.

Forgotten soldiers.

Weapons that no longer existed.

Possibilities that should have been impossible.

And every single one of them stood beneath Kaien's command.

Slowly...

The shadows began fading.

One by one, they disappeared back into the darkness until only Kaien remained standing in the center of the field.

The pressure disappeared.

The wind returned.

Everyone finally breathed again.

Then the questions came.

"Kaien!"

A group of recruits rushed toward him.

"What was that?"

"How long have you been able to do that?"

"Why didn't you tell anyone?"

"Are you even human?"

The questions overlapped.

Kaien looked overwhelmed.

"I..."

He looked between them.

"I didn't know."

The crowd became quiet.

"What?"

Kaien shook his head.

"I swear."

"I didn't know I had this."

He looked down at his hands.

"I thought the shadows were something following me."

"I thought they were connected to something outside of me."

"But..."

He looked toward where the army had disappeared.

"They were mine."

The recruits exchanged confused looks.

Even the ones who had doubted him earlier looked different now.

Jared stood among them, silent.

For the first time since meeting Kaien...

He had nothing sarcastic to say.

Instructor Owen stepped forward.

"Enough."

His voice immediately silenced everyone.

"You are soldiers."

"Not children watching a performance."

The recruits straightened.

Owen looked toward Kaien.

Then toward the remaining names.

"We are not finished."

Everyone remembered.

There was still one recruit left.

One person who had not awakened their Echo.

Owen checked the list.

"Riven Ashcroft."

Riven looked surprised.

"Me?"

Owen stared.

"Unless there is another Riven standing here."

Riven smiled awkwardly.

"Fair enough."

He walked toward the center.

Kaien watched carefully.

After everything they had seen today...

Everyone wanted to know what kind of Echo Riven would awaken.

Owen looked at him.

"Five minutes."

"Begin."

Riven closed his eyes.

The field became silent.

One minute passed.

Nothing.

Two minutes.

Still nothing.

Three minutes.

Some recruits started whispering.

"Maybe he can't awaken."

"Maybe his Echo is weak."

Riven remained still.

Then suddenly...

He opened his eyes.

But he wasn't looking at the recruits.

He was looking beside them.

Like someone was standing there.

"Hey."

Everyone looked confused.

Riven smiled slightly.

"No, I haven't changed."

A pause.

"Yeah, I know."

The recruits stared.

"Is he..."

"Talking to himself?"

Another minute passed.

Riven laughed quietly.

"You always did complain too much."

The confusion grew.

Even Kaien looked uncertain.

"Riven..."

He whispered.

"What are you doing?"

Riven didn't answer.

He continued speaking to empty space.

"Yeah."

"I miss you too."

The last few seconds passed.

Then...

The strange feeling disappeared.

Riven looked back at everyone.

He smiled.

"I awakened."

Nobody spoke.

Owen stared.

"State your Echo."

Riven took a breath.

"My Echo..."

He looked down.

"Is called..."

"Afterlife Connection."

The recruits waited.

Riven looked around.

"I can speak with the dead."

The entire field froze.

"What?"

"You mean..."

"Dead people?"

Riven nodded.

"Yes."

Immediately, everyone started talking.

"Can you talk to my grandfather?"

"My brother died during the war!"

"Can you ask my mother something?"

"Please!"

The recruits moved toward him.

Hope filled their faces.

But before Riven could answer—

"Enough."

Owen's voice stopped them.

Everyone went silent.

Owen looked at Riven.

"Your cost."

The smile disappeared from Riven's face.

The field became quiet.

Every Echo had a price.

Riven looked down.

"When I die..."

He paused.

"I won't be with the people I knew."

Nobody moved.

Riven continued.

"I won't see my family."

"I won't see my friends."

"I won't be with anyone I've ever loved."

The recruits became uncomfortable.

"My Echo lets me communicate with the dead..."

"But when I become one of them..."

His voice became quieter.

"I'll only be surrounded by strangers."

Silence.

"I'll never meet new people there."

"I'll never make new friends."

"I'll never find the people I care about."

A few recruits looked away.

Even those who had wanted him to contact their loved ones didn't know what to say anymore.

Because they finally understood.

His power wasn't a gift.

It was a reminder.

Riven could speak to the dead.

But he would never truly belong with them.

Kaien looked at his friend.

For the first time...

He understood how heavy Riven's Echo really was.

Seraphina quietly stepped closer.

"Riven..."

He smiled weakly.

"It's okay."

But everyone knew it wasn't.

The sun had already begun setting by the time Owen dismissed them.

"That's enough for today."

The recruits relaxed slightly.

"Return to your dorms."

"Wash up."

"Eat dinner."

"Lights out by midnight."

He looked across the exhausted group.

"Tomorrow..."

"Real training begins."

Nobody complained.

Not anymore.

They had seen what Echoes truly were.

Not just powers.

Pieces of someone's soul.

That night...

The academy was quieter than usual.

Three hundred recruits went to their rooms carrying new knowledge.

Some were excited.

Some were afraid.

Some wondered if they truly wanted to become soldiers.

But three recruits sat together outside the dormitory.

Kaien.

Riven.

Seraphina.

For once...

None of them spoke.

They simply looked at the stars.

Eventually, Riven broke the silence.

"So..."

Kaien looked over.

"What?"

"I can talk to dead people."

Seraphina smiled slightly.

"That is what you took from today?"

"I mean..."

Riven shrugged.

"It's pretty weird."

Kaien laughed quietly.

A real laugh.

Something he hadn't done in a long time.

And for a moment...

They were just three friends again.

Not soldiers.

Not survivors.

Just friends.

But far away...

Beyond the borders of the Allied Coalition...

Another conversation was taking place.

In the far western lands...

A massive fortress stood above a black mountain range.

The walls were made of dark stone.

Hundreds of banners moved in the cold wind.

The symbol of the Iron Dominion hung above the highest tower.

Inside the royal war chamber...

A long table was covered with maps.

Generals stood silently around it.

At the head of the room sat the ruler of the nation.

King Miles III.

A man known throughout the western territories as a brilliant strategist.

And a ruthless conqueror.

His fingers rested on a map.

A single location was marked.

The Veyral Village.

"Their defenses have weakened."

One general said.

"The survivors have fled."

Another added.

"The Allied Coalition believes they are safe."

Miles smiled.

"Good."

The room became silent.

"They always believed walls protected them."

He tapped the map.

"But walls only make people comfortable."

A general stepped forward.

"What are your orders, Your Majesty?"

Miles looked toward the window.

Two years.

That was all he needed.

"Prepare the plan."

The generals listened carefully.

"In two years..."

"The operation begins."

"And when it does..."

He looked back at the map.

"The Veyra Village will disappear completely."

No one spoke.

"Their soldiers."

"Their civilians."

"Their history."

Everything.

Miles placed his hand over the village's name.

"We will erase it."

The room remained silent.

Then the king smiled.

"Let them train."

"Let them believe they have time."

"Because when the plan begins..."

"They won't be fighting a war."

"They will be fighting extinction."

Far away...

Kaien slept peacefully for the first time in years.

Unaware that the future he had been preparing for...

Was already coming for him.
