Chapter 11:
Umbra
Autumn slowly gave way to winter.
The first snowfall blanketed the academy grounds in white, softening the harsh stone walls that had once seemed so unwelcoming. The recruits barely noticed.
Their days followed the same relentless rhythm.
The bell rang at five every morning.
Ten-mile runs.
Strength drills.
Swordsmanship.
Hand-to-hand combat.
Tactical classes.
History.
Survival.
Then more training until the stars filled the sky.
Every day.
Every week.
Every month.
The instructors never became easier.
The recruits simply became stronger.
The three hundred hopeful recruits who had first arrived at the academy were almost unrecognizable.
The cocky boys who bragged on the first day no longer smiled so confidently after months of bruises, failures, and exhausting lessons.
The timid recruits who barely spoke had learned to stand their ground.
The weak had become stronger.
The arrogant had become humbler.
They had all changed.
Some recruits had already quit.
Others had been dismissed after failing physical and tactical evaluations.
The remaining students understood something they hadn't when they first arrived.
Strength wasn't enough.
You needed discipline.
Trust.
And someone willing to pull you back to your feet when you fell.
Slowly...
Three hundred strangers became something closer to a family.
One freezing morning...
Instructor Owen watched the recruits spar across the training yard.
Wooden practice swords cracked together as pairs fought one another under the watchful eyes of several instructors.
John walked beside Owen.
"They're improving."
Owen nodded.
"Most of them."
John smiled.
"They've stopped acting like children."
Owen raised an eyebrow.
"You clearly haven't watched the eastern practice yard."
John sighed.
"Jared and Kaien?"
"Again."
"Come on!"
Jared grinned while spinning his practice sword over one shoulder.
"I know you've got more than that."
Kaien blocked another strike before pushing Jared backward.
"This is training."
"Exactly."
"So stop talking."
Jared laughed.
"You're no fun."
They circled one another.
Months of training had sharpened both of them considerably.
Jared was aggressive.
Quick.
Always looking for an opening.
Kaien was different.
Calm.
Patient.
He rarely attacked first.
Instead, he waited.
Observed.
Countered.
Their personalities carried directly into their fighting styles.
Wood slammed against wood.
CRACK!
Kaien redirected Jared's swing before tapping his shoulder with the practice blade.
"Point."
The nearby instructor called.
Jared rolled his eyes.
"Lucky."
Kaien shrugged.
"If saying that helps."
Jared immediately charged again.
"You know..."
he said while attacking,
"I still think your revenge speech was ridiculous."
Kaien's expression didn't change.
"I didn't ask."
"And that shadow army?"
Jared swung again.
"Show-off."
Kaien sidestepped.
"I didn't summon it to impress anyone."
"No?"
"Then why?"
Kaien answered simply.
"I was proving I awakened."
Jared clicked his tongue.
"There you go acting mysterious again."
Kaien sighed.
"There you go talking again."
Nearby recruits chuckled.
Months had passed.
Yet somehow...
Nothing had changed between them.
"ENOUGH!"
Instructor Owen' voice echoed across the yard.
Both immediately lowered their practice weapons.
Owen pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Why is it always you two?"
Neither answered.
Owen sighed dramatically.
"I've started recognizing your footsteps."
Several recruits laughed.
"You've managed to argue during sword practice..."
"...archery..."
"...breakfast..."
"...laundry..."
"...and once..."
He looked directly at Jared.
"...while standing in complete silence."
Jared scratched the back of his head.
"...That one wasn't my fault."
Kaien looked at him.
"You started it."
"I was breathing."
"You sighed dramatically."
"It annoyed me."
The surrounding recruits burst into laughter.
Even Owen struggled not to smile.
"Go cool off."
Both replied together.
"Yes, sir."
Unfortunately...
Cooling off lasted approximately three minutes.
By lunchtime...
They were arguing again.
"I still think you're wrong."
Jared crossed his arms.
"You haven't even explained what I'm wrong about."
"I don't need to."
Kaien blinked.
"...What?"
"I can tell."
Kaien looked toward Riven.
"Does he always make this little sense?"
Riven shrugged while eating.
"I stopped trying to understand him months ago."
Seraphina sat between them like usual.
Which wasn't an accident.
It had become an unofficial tradition.
If Jared sat on one side...
Kaien sat on the other.
Otherwise...
Something inevitably happened.
Riven called it...
"The Peacekeeper Formation."
Seraphina hated that name.
Jared pointed his fork toward Kaien.
"You always act so serious."
Kaien continued eating.
"I'm eating."
"Exactly."
"You're serious while eating."
"How should I eat?"
"I don't know."
"Happier."
Kaien looked genuinely confused.
"...It's soup."
Riven nearly choked laughing.
Seraphina covered her face.
"I can't believe this is a real conversation."
"It is."
Jared nodded proudly.
"I'm trying to improve his personality."
Kaien answered without missing a beat.
"Good luck improving yours first."
"Ouch."
Riven grinned.
"He got you there."
Jared opened his mouth to respond.
Before he could—
Seraphina held up one finger.
"No."
Both boys looked at her.
"No arguing."
"We're eating."
"We're always eating," Jared protested.
"Exactly."
"So learn to eat quietly."
Both reluctantly returned to their food.
Riven leaned closer to Seraphina.
"I don't know how you do it."
She sighed.
"Neither do I."
Despite their constant arguments...
Something strange had begun happening over the months.
Whenever another recruit insulted Kaien...
Jared usually responded first.
Likewise...
Whenever someone unfairly blamed Jared...
Kaien quietly corrected them.
Neither ever acknowledged it.
Neither thanked the other.
And if anyone pointed it out...
They immediately denied everything.
"You defended him."
"I did not."
"You literally did."
"I was correcting bad information."
"That's defending him."
"It isn't."
"It definitely is."
"It absolutely isn't."
Everyone eventually stopped trying.
One evening...
The recruits gathered around a campfire after survival training.
Stories were exchanged.
Embarrassing moments.
Training accidents.
Old memories.
Laughter echoed through the forest.
Leon laughed so hard he nearly fell backward after hearing Riven describe accidentally saluting a tree instead of Instructor Owen.
"It was dark!"
Riven defended himself.
"The tree looked authoritative."
Even Owen, watching from a distance, allowed himself a faint smile.
The academy had changed these recruits.
Not just physically.
Emotionally.
They trusted one another now.
They depended on one another.
If one recruit fell during training...
Three others reached down to help.
If someone struggled with swordsmanship...
Another stayed late to practice.
Competition remained.
But cruelty had mostly disappeared.
Mostly.
Later that night...
Kaien sat alone outside the barracks.
Snow drifted quietly through the air.
He looked toward the stars.
"So..."
he whispered.
"Umbra."
The shadows beneath the nearby trees shifted slightly.
The familiar silver-eyed figure appeared beside him.
Only visible to Kaien.
"You called."
Kaien nodded.
"I still have questions."
"Of course."
"I haven't used you since the awakening."
"That was your choice."
Kaien looked at his hands.
"I'm afraid."
The shadow tilted its head.
"Of what?"
"Of becoming someone different."
The figure remained silent.
"Power changes people."
"But refusing to understand it changes them too."
Kaien thought about Owen's words.
Hatred makes soldiers blind.
Then he thought about his mother.
About the promise he'd made.
"I don't want revenge to be the only reason I grow stronger."
The silver eyes watched him quietly.
"Then perhaps..."
"You are already changing."
Before Kaien could answer—
A familiar voice echoed from behind him.
"There you are."
It was Riven.
"You've been disappearing a lot lately."
Kaien turned around.
When he looked back...
The shadow was gone.
Only darkness remained.
"You okay?"
Riven asked.
Kaien nodded.
"...Yeah."
"For once."
The two friends walked back toward the barracks together.
Neither noticed Instructor Owen watching from the second-floor window of the administration building.
He had seen Kaien talking.
But he hadn't seen anyone else.
His expression grew thoughtful.
"...Umbra..."
he murmured.
"It isn't finished awakening yet."
And somewhere deep beneath the academy...
In a forgotten chamber sealed long before any of the recruits were born...
An ancient stone door trembled ever so slightly...
As though something on the other side had just awakened to Kaien's existence.
That night, the academy was quieter than it had been in months.
Snow drifted gently outside the barracks, coating the training grounds in silver beneath the moonlight. The sounds of laughter from earlier had long since faded. The recruits had finally fallen asleep after another grueling day of training.
Inside Dormitory 214, Kaien lay awake for a while before exhaustion finally claimed him.
Across the room, Seraphina slept peacefully.
In another dormitory, Jared was already snoring loud enough that several recruits had thrown boots at him.
Riven...
Was still awake.
He sat on the edge of his bunk, staring at his hands.
His Echo had awakened months ago, but unlike Kaien or Seraphina, it had always been... inconsistent.
Sometimes it worked.
Sometimes nothing happened.
Instructor Owen had described it as an Echo that resonated with "fragments of truth."
Whenever it activated, Riven caught brief visions of places or moments he shouldn't have been able to see.
Most lasted only seconds.
Broken images.
Random conversations.
Nothing that made sense.
It frustrated him.
"...Come on."
He looked down at his palms.
"You've got to work eventually."
The room remained silent.
His roommate had been asleep for hours.
Riven closed his eyes.
He took a deep breath, remembering Owen's lessons.
"Don't force your Echo."
"Listen to it."
"Your soul already knows the way."
He breathed slowly.
The world around him disappeared.
Darkness.
Silence.
Nothing.
"...Still nothing."
He sighed.
Maybe tonight just wasn't—
A sharp pain exploded behind his eyes.
His breathing caught.
The darkness around him suddenly cracked like shattered glass.
Heat.
Unbearable heat.
Riven opened his eyes.
He wasn't in the barracks anymore.
He stood in the middle of a ruined city.
The sky burned crimson.
Ash drifted through the air like black snow.
Buildings collapsed all around him.
The smell of smoke filled his lungs.
"...What is this?"
Screams echoed from every direction.
Men.
Women.
Children.
Soldiers.
Thousands of voices crying out in terror.
The streets were covered with bodies.
Entire buildings had been reduced to rubble.
The city looked familiar...
Yet impossible.
It looked exactly like the place Kaien had described in his recurring dreams.
Riven's heartbeat quickened.
"No..."
He slowly turned.
A woman stumbled through the flames carrying a child.
She looked toward someone in the distance.
Her face twisted with fear.
"No..."
She screamed.
"Please!"
Another voice cried out.
"Run!"
"The king has gone mad!"
Riven's breathing became uneven.
The words echoed through the ruined streets.
Then...
He heard another voice.
One filled with hatred.
"It's all your fault!"
Riven looked toward the center of the city.
There...
Standing atop a mountain of broken stone...
Was a single figure.
Tall.
Wrapped in flowing black robes that moved like living shadows.
A massive sword rested at his side.
The figure's face was hidden beneath darkness.
But somehow...
Riven knew.
"...Kaien?"
The figure slowly turned.
For just a brief second...
Moonlight touched his face.
It was older.
Harder.
Colder.
But unmistakable.
Kaien.
Only... years older.
People weren't charging toward him.
They were running away from him.
Entire armies surrounded him.
Not to protect him.
To stop him.
Voices echoed from every direction.
"Monster!"
"Don't let him escape!"
"Kill him!"
"He destroyed everything!"
Another explosion shook the city.
A tower collapsed.
Flames swallowed the streets.
Riven stood frozen.
"This..."
"This can't be real."
The older Kaien slowly lifted his sword.
Behind him...
An endless legion of shadows emerged from the smoke.
Far larger than the hundred Kaien had summoned during his awakening.
Thousands.
No...
Hundreds of thousands.
The earth itself disappeared beneath the sea of darkness.
Riven felt his body trembling.
"What happened to you...?"
Before anyone could answer...
Everything vanished.
Darkness.
Absolute silence.
Riven found himself standing inside a room so black that he couldn't see the walls.
There was no floor.
No ceiling.
Only endless darkness.
"...Hello?"
His voice echoed forever.
Then...
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Someone was approaching.
But no figure ever appeared.
Only a voice.
Ancient.
Deep.
Calm.
"So..."
"Another has arrived."
Riven swallowed.
"Who's there?"
The voice ignored the question.
"You have seen the throne."
"The... throne?"
"The one who sits upon it has not yet claimed it."
Riven's heart pounded.
"What are you talking about?"
Silence.
Then...
The voice spoke again.
Every word echoed through the endless void.
"Tell Kaien..."
A pause.
"His throne is waiting for him."
Riven frowned.
"What throne?"
No answer.
"Who are you?"
Nothing.
"What does that even mean?"
The darkness began collapsing.
The voice faded.
"The King..."
"Must eventually return."
Everything shattered.
Riven's eyes flew open.
He gasped for air.
His entire body was soaked in sweat.
The dormitory was exactly as he'd left it.
Moonlight filtered through the window.
His roommate continued snoring.
Nothing had changed.
Except...
His hands were shaking uncontrollably.
"...No..."
He whispered.
"No..."
He stood so quickly that his chair fell over.
His breathing refused to slow.
"What..."
"What did I just see?"
The dream...
No.
It hadn't felt like a dream.
It felt...
Real.
Far too real.
He looked toward the window.
Outside, the academy slept peacefully.
Somewhere in another dormitory...
Kaien was asleep.
Completely unaware.
Riven leaned against the wall.
His thoughts raced.
Should he tell Kaien?
Should he tell Instructor Owen?
What if it was just another random vision?
But...
It had never felt like that before.
Every previous Echo vision had been fragmented.
Blurry.
Meaningless.
This one...
Had been clear.
Detailed.
Like witnessing a memory.
Or...
A future.
He slowly sat back down.
The words echoed inside his head.
"Tell Kaien..."
"His throne is waiting for him."
"...What throne?"
Riven whispered to himself.
"And why did everyone blame him?"
He remembered the ruined city.
The screams.
The armies.
The older Kaien.
The hatred in everyone's voices.
It didn't match the Kaien he knew.
The Kaien who trained harder than anyone.
Who quietly helped weaker recruits after hours.
Who still carried guilt over leaving his mother behind.
That Kaien...
Would never destroy a city.
Would he?
Riven immediately shook his head.
"No."
"He wouldn't."
Yet...
The image refused to leave his mind.
The older Kaien hadn't looked evil.
He had looked...
Broken.
Like someone carrying the weight of the entire world.
Riven stared into the darkness until sunrise.
For the first time since joining the academy...
He was afraid.
Not of war.
Not of training.
Not even of death.
He was afraid...
Of the future his Echo had just shown him.
And somewhere far away...
Beyond the reach of kingdoms...
Beyond the forgotten ruins where history itself slept...
An ancient stone throne sat alone in a vast chamber carved from black obsidian.
No guards stood beside it.
No king occupied it.
Yet shadows gathered around its base like faithful servants.
As if...
They were patiently waiting.
Waiting...
For their master to finally come home.
