Chapter 18:
Umbra
The canyon went silent.
The Bloodmist members stood frozen.
Not because they were afraid.
Because they were trying to understand what they were looking at.
Kaien lowered his sword.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then...
He spoke one word.
"Rise."
The ground shook.
The shadows beneath the battlefield began moving.
At first, everyone thought it was the darkness from the trees.
Then the ground cracked.
Black mist poured upward like smoke from the earth.
One shadow became ten.
Ten became one hundred.
One hundred became thousands.
The canyon was filled with the sound of armor forming, weapons appearing, and footsteps echoing from soldiers who had been forgotten by time itself.
The Umbra army had returned.
The Bloodmist members stared.
The mercenaries who had surrounded Squad Twelve slowly stepped backward.
"What..."
"How many are there?"
Nobody answered.
Because there was no answer.
The shadow soldiers stood behind Kaien like an endless army waiting for a command.
Ancient warriors.
Lost knights.
Forgotten soldiers from civilizations nobody remembered.
All standing beneath the banner of Umbra.
The Bloodmist leader's expression finally changed.
Not fear.
But concern.
"So the rumors were true."
Kaien looked forward.
"No."
His grip tightened around his sword.
"The rumors weren't enough."
The shadows shifted.
"And neither was I."
Then something moved.
A shadow different from the others.
Bigger.
Heavier.
Older.
The creature that had always followed Kaien from the darkness stepped forward.
For the first time...
It revealed its true form.
The ground cracked beneath its weight.
It stood nearly ten feet tall.
Its body was made from a deeper darkness than the other shadows.
Not empty darkness.
Something alive.
Something ancient.
Six glowing eyes opened across its face.
The creature's shadow stretched farther than any other.
Even the Umbra soldiers seemed to acknowledge its presence.
Riven stared.
"That was the thing following him?"
Leon swallowed.
"I thought it was just another shadow."
Seraphina watched carefully.
"No."
Her eyes narrowed.
"That isn't a soldier."
"What is it?"
She looked at Kaien.
"I don't think even he knows."
The creature lowered itself slightly.
Not attacking.
Not threatening.
Waiting.
Kaien looked at it.
"You were protecting me this whole time."
The beast's six eyes stared back.
Then it slowly bowed.
A chill ran through everyone watching.
Even the Bloodmist leader became serious.
"Interesting."
He looked at Kaien.
"You don't command that thing."
Kaien shook his head.
"No."
A pause.
"It chose me."
Kaien lifted his sword.
The Umbra army moved.
The shadow soldiers rushed forward.
Not toward the Bloodmist.
Toward the mercenaries blocking the escape route.
The battlefield exploded into movement.
Weapons clashed.
Echo abilities activated.
The mercenaries who thought they had an easy victory suddenly found themselves fighting an army that never seemed to end.
One soldier destroyed a shadow warrior.
Two more appeared.
Another mercenary knocked away five.
Ten replaced them.
The more they fought...
The more hopeless it became.
The Umbra army wasn't powerful because every soldier was unbeatable.
It was powerful because it refused to disappear.
The giant Bloodmist member stepped forward.
"So that's my opponent?"
The shadow beast turned toward him.
The assassin laughed.
"Good."
"I was getting bored."
His body transformed.
Stone-like armor covered his skin.
His Echo activated.
"Let's see if your monster can break Titanhide."
The beast stared silently.
Then it moved.
The ground exploded beneath its feet.
The giant barely raised his arms before the creature collided with him.
The impact sent a shockwave through the canyon.
Everyone stopped for a moment.
The giant smiled.
"Finally."
"Something interesting."
The two monsters began fighting.
Stone against shadow.
Strength against strength.
Meanwhile...
The other six Bloodmist members surrounded Kaien.
The leader stepped forward.
"You really think summoning an army makes you untouchable?"
Kaien looked around.
Six deadly assassins.
All with powerful Echoes.
He would've been terrified.
But now...
He understood something.
An Echo wasn't just a power.
It was the person using it.
And he had spent years training.
Years surviving.
Years learning how to fight.
"I don't need to be untouchable."
Kaien raised two shadow blades.
One appeared in each hand.
Dark twin daggers formed from Umbra.
"I only need one opening."
The Bloodmist members smiled.
The assassin with threads attacked first.
Invisible strings flew toward him.
Kaien moved.
Not backward.
Forward.
He slipped between the threads with impossible precision.
The assassin's eyes widened.
"Fast."
Kaien spun.
One dagger struck the ground.
A shadow weapon erupted upward, forcing her to jump away.
Before she landed...
Three shadow knives flew toward her.
She barely avoided them.
The leader watched carefully.
"He isn't fighting like a soldier."
"No."
The disguised assassin answered.
"He's moving like a killer."
The laughing Bloodmist member released his Echo.
The strange purple mist spread across the battlefield.
"Let's see how long you last when reality changes."
Kaien felt the world shift.
The canyon disappeared.
For a moment...
He was back in Veyral Village.
His mother was alive.
The walls were still standing.
No war.
No flames.
No pain.
"Kaien."
He froze.
His mother's voice.
"Come home."
His heart tightened.
The illusion was perfect.
Almost.
Then he noticed something.
His mother was smiling.
But her eyes were sad.
Because she knew.
This wasn't real.
Kaien closed his eyes.
"You aren't her."
The illusion cracked.
The Bloodmist member frowned.
"What?"
Kaien opened his eyes.
"Because my mother wouldn't ask me to run from my pain."
The illusion shattered.
He appeared back in the canyon.
The assassin stared.
"You broke through it?"
Kaien moved.
"Pain is the one thing I know better than anyone."
A shadow dagger appeared.
The assassin barely blocked.
The Bloodmist leader finally stepped in.
The others moved away.
He studied Kaien.
"You've changed."
Kaien didn't answer.
"You were angry before."
"You were reckless."
"Now..."
The leader narrowed his eyes.
"You're calm."
Kaien tightened his grip.
"Anger is easy."
"It makes you feel powerful."
A shadow formed around him.
"But control..."
He looked directly at the Bloodmist captain.
"Control is what makes you dangerous."
The leader smiled slightly.
"Are you sure this is your first real fight?"
The others paused.
Because even they were wondering.
Kaien fought like someone who had spent years in battle.
His movements weren't random.
Every step had a purpose.
Every attack had a reason.
The leader continued.
"Your first battle against people like us."
"Your first battle against monsters."
"Your first time killing?"
Kaien's expression hardened.
"No."
A pause.
"But it's the first time I've fought something like you."
The leader smiled.
"Meaning?"
Kaien raised his twin shadow daggers.
"You're not soldiers."
"You're not protecting anyone."
"You're not fighting for a cause."
The darkness around him grew.
"You're just people who decided other lives don't matter."
The Bloodmist leader's smile disappeared.
For the first time...
He saw something dangerous.
Not Kaien's power.
His belief.
The battle continued.
Six assassins against one boy.
An impossible situation.
Except Kaien wasn't truly alone.
Behind him stood Umbra.
An army.
A beast.
A power that had chosen him.
But more importantly...
Behind him stood his friends.
The people he had almost lost.
The people he had finally learned to trust.
And that was the difference.
Before...
Kaien fought because he wanted revenge.
Now...
He fought because he had something left to protect.
The Bloodmist leader looked at him carefully.
And for the first time...
A terrifying thought entered his mind.
Maybe the legend wasn't dangerous because Umbra was powerful.
Maybe it was dangerous because the person holding it...
Was finally starting to understand why he had it.
The shadow soldiers continued marching.
The six Bloodmist members attacked.
The beast roared against the giant.
The battlefield had changed.
What was once a simple escort mission had become something far beyond anything Squad Twelve could have imagined.
The canyon was no longer a road.
It was a battlefield.
Shadow soldiers clashed against mercenaries.
The massive Umbra beast fought against the Bloodmist's strongest member.
And in the center...
Kaien stood alone against six assassins.
For a moment, the Bloodmist members had underestimated him.
They thought Umbra was everything.
They thought without his army, Kaien was just another recruit.
They were wrong.
But now...
They stopped laughing.
The Bloodmist captain raised his blade.
"Enough playing around."
The other members looked toward him.
The captain's expression became serious.
"We stop testing him."
"We finish this."
The six members nodded.
For the first time...
They stopped holding back.
The first one stepped forward.
The man who had been silent the entire fight.
His name was Varek.
Unlike the others, he didn't smile.
Didn't joke.
Didn't underestimate.
He simply placed his hand on the ground.
"Echo..."
The earth beneath everyone began shaking.
"...Faultline."
The canyon trembled.
At first, Kaien thought it was another attack.
Then the ground beneath his feet moved.
The entire battlefield shifted.
The earth rose like waves.
Stone mountains formed instantly.
The flat ground became a maze of cliffs and valleys.
Kaien jumped backward.
A wall of stone erupted where he had been standing.
He landed on another piece of rising earth.
But immediately...
That ground dropped.
He jumped again.
Another hill formed.
Another disappeared.
The entire battlefield was moving.
Not randomly.
Controlled.
The Bloodmist member smiled.
"You're fast."
"But let's see how long you can keep moving when the battlefield itself is against you."
Kaien narrowed his eyes.
He understood immediately.
This wasn't an attack meant to hurt him.
It was meant to control him.
Another Bloodmist member stepped forward.
A tall man carrying dozens of knives.
He spun one blade between his fingers.
"Echo..."
His eyes sharpened.
"...Perfect Path."
The dagger left his hand.
Kaien moved.
The dagger changed direction.
It followed.
Kaien blocked with a shadow blade.
CLANG!
The dagger flew away.
The Bloodmist member smiled.
"You blocked it."
He pulled another dagger.
"And that's the problem."
Another throw.
Another.
Another.
Every single weapon curved toward Kaien.
No matter where he moved...
They followed.
Kaien dodged between them.
One cut his sleeve.
Another scratched his cheek.
A third shattered against his shadow armor.
"He doesn't miss..."
Kaien whispered.
The assassin smiled.
"Exactly."
"But I never said they were impossible to block."
Before Kaien could move forward...
A third Bloodmist member raised both hands.
The stones around him lifted.
Trees ripped from the ground.
Massive rocks floated into the air.
"Echo..."
The man grinned.
"...Graviton."
Everything around Kaien became a weapon.
The first boulder launched.
Kaien jumped.
A tree came from the side.
He twisted.
A rock came from above.
He blocked.
The impact forced him backward.
The assassin laughed.
"You're trapped."
Kaien landed.
The ground moved again.
A hill pushed him upward.
Immediately...
Five daggers came toward him.
He swung both shadow blades.
Blocking them.
But the force behind the attacks pushed him back.
The Bloodmist had created a perfect combination.
One controlled the battlefield.
One controlled the attacks.
One controlled the objects.
Kaien couldn't move forward.
Then the fourth Bloodmist member opened his eyes.
A strange blue light appeared.
He smiled.
"I know what you're going to do."
Kaien froze.
The man pointed at him.
"My Echo."
A pause.
"Ten Seconds Ahead."
The assassin stepped forward.
"I see the future."
Kaien stared.
"How far?"
"Ten seconds."
The man smiled.
"Enough."
Kaien moved.
The assassin immediately reacted.
A blade blocked his attack before it happened.
Kaien's eyes widened.
The man wasn't reacting.
He was already there.
Another attack.
Blocked.
Another movement.
Countered.
Every decision Kaien made...
The man already knew.
"You can't surprise me."
The assassin whispered.
"Because I've already seen you try."
For the first time...
Kaien was pushed back.
Not because he was weaker.
Because he couldn't find an opening.
Every path was controlled.
Every attack predicted.
Every escape blocked.
The Bloodmist captain watched.
"Now you understand."
Kaien breathed heavily.
The captain continued.
"You have power."
"But power means nothing if you can't use it."
The others surrounded him.
The ground moved.
Daggers flew.
Rocks fell.
The future reader waited.
Kaien dodged again.
And again.
And again.
But slowly...
He was being pushed exactly where they wanted.
From a distance...
Seraphina noticed.
Something was wrong.
"They're not trying to kill him."
Riven looked confused.
"What?"
"They're moving him."
Leon watched carefully.
"They're controlling his position."
Jared's eyes widened.
"They're building a trap."
Seraphina nodded.
"They're not fighting him individually."
"They're fighting as one."
The Bloodmist continued their plan.
Varek moved the earth.
"Left."
The future reader looked ahead.
"Ten seconds."
"He dodges right."
The dagger user threw.
Kaien blocked.
The rock manipulator sent a boulder.
Kaien jumped backward.
Exactly where they wanted.
The future reader smiled.
"Perfect."
The captain watched.
The only open space left was behind Kaien.
A narrow path between two cliffs.
A place where he couldn't dodge.
The future reader stepped forward.
"I see it."
Everyone looked toward him.
"The next ten seconds."
A smile appeared.
"He jumps backward."
"He avoids the rock."
"He turns."
"And then..."
He raised his blade.
"I stab him."
Kaien landed.
Exactly where they predicted.
The future reader disappeared.
Behind him.
A blade moved toward his chest.
"You're finished."
But...
Kaien smiled.
The assassin froze.
Something was wrong.
Kaien didn't look surprised.
Didn't look afraid.
The blade stopped inches away.
"You're right."
Kaien said quietly.
"I was going to jump backward."
The assassin's eyes widened.
"What?"
Kaien slowly turned.
"You see ten seconds ahead."
The assassin stepped back.
"Yes."
"But that's all."
The darkness beneath Kaien moved.
The assassin looked down.
Shadow chains wrapped around his ankle.
"When you see the future..."
Kaien's eyes glowed faintly.
"You only see what happens."
"You don't see what I decide."
The assassin's expression changed.
The Bloodmist captain narrowed his eyes.
"Interesting."
Kaien pulled the assassin away with Umbra.
"You've been using the same mistake everyone makes."
The shadow soldiers around him shifted.
"You think knowing my actions means knowing me."
The canyon became darker.
"But you don't."
The Bloodmist members paused.
Kaien stood up straight.
Blood covered his clothes.
His breathing was heavy.
But he was smiling.
"You only know the Kaien who reacts."
A shadow dagger formed in his hand.
"You haven't met the one who chooses."
The future reader immediately looked ahead.
Ten seconds.
Twenty possible futures.
Thirty.
His expression changed.
Because every future...
Was different.
Kaien wasn't moving the way he expected.
He wasn't following patterns.
He was creating them.
The assassin whispered:
"What are you?"
Kaien looked at him.
"Someone who learned."
A pause.
"Your future isn't guaranteed."
The Bloodmist captain finally stepped forward.
The others stopped.
He understood.
The battle had changed again.
At first...
They were hunting Kaien.
Now...
They were studying him.
And that was dangerous.
Because every time Kaien was pushed into a corner...
He adapted.
The captain tightened his grip.
"Everyone."
"Stop treating him like a recruit."
The Bloodmist members looked at him.
The captain's eyes remained on Kaien.
"Treat him like what he is."
A pause.
"The beginning of something dangerous."
Kaien raised his shadow blades.
Behind him...
The Umbra army continued fighting.
The six Bloodmist members prepared again.
The canyon shook.
The air became heavy.
Because now...
Both sides understood.
The first phase of the battle was over.
The Bloodmist had revealed their abilities.
Kaien had revealed his determination.
Now...
The real fight was beginning.
