Chapter 24:

The Five Nation Echo Tournament

Umbra

Dinner that evening felt different.

The academy cafeteria was as loud as ever.

Plates clattered.

Conversations filled the room.

Laughter echoed between the stone walls.

Yet beneath the noise...

Something had changed.

Kaien walked through the serving line with Riven, Seraphina, Jared, and Leon.

He grabbed a tray before quietly sitting down at their usual table.

Almost immediately, he noticed it.

People were looking at him.

Not with admiration.

Not with curiosity.

With uncertainty.

Every time his eyes met theirs...

They quickly looked away.

Whispers spread from table to table.

"...Did you see it?"

"A thousand shadow soldiers..."

"What kind of Echo even does that?"

"I heard he summoned a monster too."

"They said it bowed to him."

"What if he loses control?"

"What if he already has?"

Kaien lowered his gaze to his food.

He didn't say anything.

Across from him, Jared noticed.

"You hearing this?"

Kaien nodded slightly.

Leon frowned.

"They're scared."

"They should be scared."

Jared stabbed his fork into his food.

"They've never seen anything like Umbra."

Riven quietly looked around the cafeteria.

"It isn't just fear."

"It's uncertainty."

"They don't know what Kaien is capable of."

Seraphina remained silent.

She had noticed something else.

No one wanted to sit near their table anymore.

Entire rows that were usually full remained empty.

The recruits weren't avoiding everyone.

They were avoiding Kaien.

One recruit whispered a little too loudly.

"If he wanted..."

"He could wipe out this academy."

Another answered,

"Who could stop him?"

"I don't think even Instructor Owen could."

A third recruit leaned forward.

"What happens if he joins the Iron Dominion?"

"What if Umbra was never meant to protect us?"

Kaien slowly tightened his grip around his spoon.

The metal bent.

Seraphina gently placed her hand over his.

"Don't."

He relaxed.

"I know."

She smiled softly.

"They don't know you."

Kaien looked across the room.

"Maybe."

"But what if they're right to be afraid?"

The table became quiet.

Nobody answered.

Because none of them truly knew.

Elsewhere...

Inside the academy's oldest building...

Instructor Owen climbed a narrow staircase carrying a lantern.

Dust covered every step.

Cobwebs stretched between shelves.

Almost nobody came here anymore.

The Archive Hall.

The oldest library in the Allied Coalition.

Thousands of books filled endless shelves.

Wars.

Kings.

Ancient Echoes.

Forgotten civilizations.

If answers about Umbra existed...

They would be here.

Owen stopped before a massive wooden door.

Above it was engraved:

Restricted Records

Only instructors of the highest rank were permitted inside.

He unlocked the door.

It groaned open.

The room smelled of old parchment.

Shelves reached nearly to the ceiling.

Owen set the lantern down.

"...Umbra..."

He searched through dozens of shelves.

Nothing.

No books.

No reports.

No Echo records.

Hours passed.

He searched every section under:

Echoes.

Darkness.

Shadow.

Ancient abilities.

Nothing.

Owen frowned.

"Impossible..."

"There has to be something."

Then he remembered.

John.

The academy librarian.

An old man who had served nearly fifty years.

Owen hurried downstairs.

John looked up from his desk.

"Working late again?"

Owen nodded.

"I need information."

John smiled.

"About what?"

"Umbra."

The smile disappeared.

For several seconds...

John simply stared at him.

"I was afraid you'd ask that one day."

Owen narrowed his eyes.

"So you know something."

John slowly stood.

Without saying another word...

He walked toward a locked cabinet hidden behind a bookshelf.

He pulled out an old iron key.

The lock clicked.

Inside...

Only three books remained.

All wrapped in black cloth.

John carefully lifted one.

Dust drifted into the air.

"This..."

He whispered.

"...has never left this room."

Owen accepted the book.

Its cover had no title.

Only a silver emblem.

A throne surrounded by shadows.

His heartbeat quickened.

He slowly opened it.

The first page contained only one sentence.

"Should Umbra awaken again... the world will face its final choice."

Owen turned another page.

Blank.

Another.

Blank.

Every page...

Blank.

"What?"

He flipped faster.

Nothing.

Hundreds of empty pages.

He looked at John.

"It's empty."

John nodded.

"It always has been."

"Then why protect it?"

John looked toward the window.

"Because..."

"It isn't meant for us."

Owen frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"The book only reveals itself to the rightful reader."

Silence.

Owen slowly closed it.

"So nobody has ever read it?"

John hesitated.

"...One person."

Owen immediately looked up.

"Who?"

John's face became pale.

"I don't know."

"The records don't say."

"They only say..."

"...the reader disappeared."

A chill ran through Owen.

He looked back at the empty book.

Then another thought entered his mind.

"The eyes."

John looked confused.

"What eyes?"

"The Crimson Iris."

John's expression froze.

"You've seen it?"

Owen nodded.

"Today."

John quietly sat down.

"I hoped..."

"...that wasn't real."

Owen immediately noticed.

"You know that name."

John slowly nodded.

"I've only heard whispers."

He walked toward another shelf.

This time...

He removed a single scroll.

Much older than the book.

The paper was cracked with age.

He carefully opened it.

At the very bottom...

A faded drawing appeared.

An eye.

Its iris was crimson.

Around it...

Black rings.

Covered in shifting symbols.

Owen's breathing stopped.

It was identical.

Exactly what Kaien had shown during the Bloodmist battle.

"The Crimson Iris..."

John whispered.

"...is not an Echo."

Owen looked at him.

"Then what is it?"

John shook his head.

"No one knows."

"But every legend agrees on one thing."

Owen waited.

"It only appears..."

"...before the Shadow King rises."

Silence filled the archive.

Owen looked back toward the drawing.

"So Umbra..."

"And the Crimson Iris..."

"They're connected."

John nodded slowly.

"But not in the way people believe."

"What do you mean?"

"The old stories never mention Umbra creating the eye."

"They mention..."

"The eye choosing Umbra."

Owen's mind raced.

"So Kaien's Echo..."

"...isn't complete."

John looked uneasy.

"No."

"I think..."

"...Kaien himself isn't complete."

Meanwhile...

Back in the cafeteria...

The whispers continued.

One recruit slammed his tray onto the table.

"I don't care how strong he is."

"If he ever betrays us..."

"We have to kill him first."

Several recruits nodded.

"Exactly."

"Did you see those soldiers?"

"He could conquer nations."

Another recruit shook his head.

"Forget nations."

"He could destroy them."

A girl sitting nearby looked nervous.

"What if Umbra corrupts people?"

"What if he becomes another Bloodmist?"

The room slowly grew louder.

Fear spread faster than facts.

Kaien quietly stood.

"I'm finished eating."

Seraphina looked up.

"Kaien..."

"I'm fine."

He forced a smile.

"I just need some air."

Without another word...

He walked out of the cafeteria.

Everyone watched him leave.

No one stopped him.

Outside...

The evening sky had begun to darken.

Kaien walked alone through the academy courtyard.

He stared at his own shadow stretching across the stone path.

"...Are they right?"

He whispered.

For the first time...

His own shadow answered.

Not with words.

But by moving.

Just slightly.

As though listening.

Far away...

Deep inside Umbra...

The unknown figure stood before the ancient throne once more.

It looked toward the human world.

Then quietly spoke.

"They fear him..."

"...exactly as they feared the first king."

Another ancient voice echoed through the darkness.

"And fear..."

"It is always where the story begins."

The throne remained empty.

Waiting.

Patient.

As if it already knew...

Someone would eventually sit upon it.

Night settled quietly over the academy.

Moonlight spilled across the stone walls, casting long shadows through the empty hallways.

Most of the recruits had long since fallen asleep after another exhausting day of training.

Dormitory 214 was no exception.

Riven was already asleep, his breathing calm and steady.

Jared snored loudly from the opposite side of the room.

Leon threw a pillow across the room without even waking up.

"Shut... up..."

Jared only snored louder.

Kaien lay awake, staring at the wooden ceiling above him.

The whispers from dinner echoed inside his mind.

"What if he betrays us?"

"Could anyone stop him?"

"He's too dangerous."

He slowly closed his eyes.

"...Am I?"

Across the room, Seraphina quietly noticed he still hadn't fallen asleep, but she chose not to disturb him.

Some battles...

People had to fight alone.

Meanwhile...

Instructor Owen hadn't slept.

The lantern on his desk burned low as another stack of ancient books lay scattered across the archive floor.

Hours had passed.

Hundreds of pages had been read.

Thousands of names had been searched.

Yet...

Nothing.

No explanation for Umbra.

No explanation for the Crimson Iris.

No explanation for the mysterious Shadow Throne.

Owen rubbed his tired eyes.

"There has to be something..."

He stood and walked toward another forgotten shelf hidden behind layers of dust.

The books there were older than the academy itself.

Most of the titles had faded away.

He carefully removed one after another.

Kingdom Records.

Ancient Geography.

Military Strategies.

Echo Classification.

Nothing.

He sighed.

"I've searched everything."

John, the elderly librarian, slowly approached carrying two cups of tea.

"You won't find what you're looking for."

Owen accepted the cup.

"Why?"

John smiled sadly.

"Because someone wanted it forgotten."

Owen looked at him.

"You mean destroyed?"

John shook his head.

"Worse."

"Erased."

Owen frowned.

"There's a difference?"

John nodded.

"If a book is destroyed..."

"Someone may remember what it said."

"But if history itself is rewritten..."

"No one even knows something is missing."

Silence filled the archive.

Owen looked back toward the blank black book.

"What happened seven hundred years ago?"

John quietly answered,

"I don't know."

"And that's exactly what frightens me."

For the first time in decades...

Instructor Owen admitted something to himself.

He wasn't searching for answers anymore.

He was searching for pieces of a story someone had intentionally buried.

Morning arrived far too quickly.

CLANG!

CLANG!

CLANG!

The academy bell echoed across the base.

"WAKE UP!"

Instructors marched through the dormitories.

"Outside!"

"Three minutes!"

"Move!"

The recruits jumped from their beds.

The usual complaints began immediately.

"Already?"

"My legs still hurt!"

"I think I'm dying!"

Jared stumbled out of bed with his blanket still wrapped around him.

"I vote we sleep another hour."

Leon shoved him toward the door.

"You vote wrong."

Within minutes...

Three hundred recruits stood assembled on the massive training field.

Everyone expected another brutal morning.

Ten-mile runs.

Swimming.

Combat drills.

Instead...

Instructor Owen walked to the front with an unusual expression.

He looked almost...

Excited.

The recruits exchanged confused looks.

"When does he ever smile?"

Riven whispered.

Seraphina looked just as confused.

"I don't think I've ever seen it."

Owen raised one hand.

The field became silent.

"This morning..."

"There will be no running."

Several recruits gasped.

"No swimming."

More surprised whispers.

"No endurance drills."

Jared nearly cried.

"Is this heaven?"

Leon elbowed him.

"Wait for it."

Owen smiled slightly.

"Today..."

"We have something much more important."

He unfolded a sealed letter bearing the crest of the Allied Coalition.

"This arrived last night."

"It has been approved by every allied nation."

Everyone listened carefully.

Owen continued.

"In two weeks..."

"The Five Nation Echo Tournament will begin."

The recruits erupted with excitement.

"A tournament?"

"Against other nations?"

"Seriously?"

Owen nodded.

"Five nations."

"The greatest young Echo users each nation has to offer."

He pointed toward the map behind him.

"The Kingdom of Aster."

"The Republic of Velmora."

"The Frost Dominion."

"The Allied Coalition..."

He paused.

"And..."

His expression became serious.

"...The Iron Dominion."

The entire field fell silent.

Every recruit knew that name.

The nation responsible for countless wars.

The nation Kaien hated more than anything.

Without thinking...

Everyone turned.

Their eyes landed on Kaien.

He hadn't moved.

But something about him...

Had changed.

His fists were clenched so tightly that blood dripped from his palms.

His jaw remained locked.

His breathing slowed.

His icy blue eyes...

Were filled with something much darker.

Hatred.

Pure.

Unfiltered.

For just a moment...

The recruits forgot who the enemy was.

Because the look on Kaien's face...

Didn't belong to a hero.

It looked like the face of someone preparing for revenge.

Someone preparing for war.

One recruit quietly whispered,

"...That's terrifying."

Another nodded.

"I've never seen someone look like that."

Even Jared looked uneasy.

Riven gently stepped beside Kaien.

"...Kaien."

No answer.

Seraphina quietly reached out and placed a hand on his shoulder.

His body tensed.

Then slowly relaxed.

He blinked.

The murderous look disappeared.

Almost instantly.

He looked around and realized everyone had been staring at him.

"...Sorry."

The field remained quiet.

Owen had noticed everything.

He said nothing.

But deep inside...

He worried.

Hatred was becoming easier for Kaien to reach.

That wasn't a good sign.

Owen cleared his throat.

"The tournament is not simply about winning."

"It is about observing."

"You will witness Echoes you've never imagined."

"Every nation develops abilities differently."

"Some specialize in defense."

"Some in speed."

"Others in assassination."

He looked across the recruits.

"You will learn from one another."

Then he raised three fingers.

"However..."

"Only three recruits from each nation may participate."

Groans immediately spread across the field.

"What?"

"Only three?"

"That's not fair!"

"What about everyone else?"

Owen nodded.

"The remaining recruits will attend as spectators."

"You will cheer."

"You will observe."

"And you will learn."

One recruit raised his hand.

"Sir..."

"How are the three chosen?"

Owen smiled.

"You."

The recruits looked confused.

"Today..."

"You will vote."

A wave of murmurs spread through the crowd.

"Vote?"

"For who?"

Owen nodded.

"Every recruit may cast three names."

"No voting for yourself."

"The three recruits receiving the most votes..."

"...will represent our nation."

Jared immediately looked at Leon.

"I'm voting for me."

Leon sighed.

"He literally said you can't."

"I was testing him."

"No you weren't."

Riven chuckled.

Seraphina smiled.

Kaien remained silent.

Owen continued.

"Choose carefully."

"This isn't about popularity."

"It isn't about friendships."

"It is about trust."

"If these three fall..."

"They represent every one of you."

The seriousness of those words settled over the recruits.

This wasn't just a competition.

It was politics.

It was diplomacy.

It was showing the world the strength of their nation.

Owen folded the letter.

"By tonight..."

"The voting boxes will be placed outside the main hall."

"You may cast your votes until lights out."

"Tomorrow morning..."

"I will announce the three representatives."

He looked over the crowd one final time.

"I expect every one of you to think carefully."

"Dismissed."

Immediately the field erupted with conversation.

"Kaien has to be one."

"Obviously."

"What about Seraphina?"

"She's incredible."

"I think Riven deserves it."

"What about Jared?"

"He protected everyone against Bloodmist."

"Leon is strong too."

Small groups began debating across the field.

Meanwhile...

Several recruits stood farther away, speaking quietly.

"I don't know if I want Kaien representing us."

Another frowned.

"Are you serious?"

"He's our strongest fighter."

"Exactly."

"What if he loses control?"

"What if he attacks the Iron Dominion during the tournament?"

A third recruit whispered,

"...What if that's exactly what starts another war?"

None of them noticed...

Kaien had heard every word.

He looked toward the distant mountains where the Iron Dominion lay beyond the horizon.

His voice was barely audible.

"...I'm coming."

"Just wait a little longer."

Far away...

Inside the Iron Dominion's capital...

General Magnus Draven stood before a massive war map.

A messenger entered the chamber.

"The Five Nation Tournament has been confirmed."

Magnus smiled.

"As expected."

"And Kaien Voss?"

The messenger bowed.

"Our spies believe he will almost certainly be chosen."

Magnus looked out the fortress window.

"Good."

"The board has been set."

He turned toward Orion, who stood silently in the shadows.

"Our next move begins at the tournament."

Orion nodded once.

"Understood."

Neither man smiled.

Because they both knew...

The tournament was never just a tournament.

It was the first time every future enemy...

Would stand face-to-face.

And before it was over...

Someone's destiny would change forever.
