Chapter 26:

Training

Umbra

The field remained silent after Owen finished announcing the representatives.

Everyone was still processing everything.

The tournament.

The other nations.

The Iron Dominion.

And most importantly...

Kaien Voss.

Owen looked across the recruits, making sure everyone was listening.

"There is something else you need to understand."

The recruits straightened.

"This tournament is not a normal competition."

He held up the rule sheet in his hand.

"You are not fighting for entertainment."

"You are not fighting for pride."

"You are representing your nation."

The wind moved across the training field.

"Your actions will be watched by soldiers, commanders, and leaders from every nation."

"One mistake could change how the world views you."

Kaien listened carefully.

Because he understood.

This wasn't just a tournament.

It was a stage.

And everyone would be watching.

Owen unfolded the paper.

"Now."

"The rules."

A few recruits immediately became more serious.

"Rule one."

He raised a finger.

"Once you are eliminated, you are finished."

A few people looked confused.

"Meaning?"

Owen looked toward them.

"You do not return."

"No second chances."

"No hidden entrances."

"No excuses."

"If you lose, you accept defeat."

The recruits nodded.

"Rule two."

"No teaming up."

A few people exchanged looks.

"Unless the match specifically allows teams."

"During a one-on-one battle, you fight alone."

"You do not interfere with another match."

"You do not help your teammate."

"Anyone caught doing so will immediately be disqualified."

Another finger.

"Rule three."

"No cheating."

His voice became colder.

"I don't care how talented you are."

"I don't care what nation you represent."

"If you attempt to manipulate the rules..."

"You are done."

The entire field became quiet.

Owen lowered the paper.

"Those are the important rules."

A few recruits looked relieved.

"That's it?"

Owen sighed.

"There are smaller rules."

"Don't intentionally attack after your opponent is eliminated."

"Don't threaten judges."

"Don't destroy the arena."

"Don't insult your opponent's family."

Jared raised his hand.

"Wait."

Everyone looked at him.

"That's actually a rule?"

Owen stared.

"Unfortunately."

Jared lowered his hand.

"People really need to be told that?"

Leon sighed.

"Apparently."

A few recruits laughed.

Even Owen smiled slightly.

"But understand something."

His expression became serious again.

"Confidence is good."

"Arrogance gets people hurt."

"You will meet fighters stronger than you."

"You will meet abilities you have never seen before."

"You will meet people who have trained their entire lives for this moment."

He looked at the three representatives.

"Especially you three."

Seraphina, Kyle, and Kaien stood forward.

"You are not the strongest because you were chosen."

"You were chosen because people believe you can become stronger."

Owen folded the paper.

"Starting tomorrow..."

"Your preparation begins."

The recruits became excited.

"For the next month, you will train."

"One month."

"Thirty days."

"That is all you have."

A few people whispered.

"Only a month?"

Owen continued.

"During that time, you will improve your Echo control."

"You will improve your combat skills."

"You will learn how to fight against unfamiliar abilities."

"Because when you arrive at Taku Island..."

His eyes narrowed.

"You will not be facing classmates."

"You will be facing the best recruits from five different nations."

The name caught everyone's attention.

"Taku Island."

Many recruits had heard of it.

A mysterious island far north of the continent.

An island that belonged to no nation.

A neutral territory.

Owen explained.

"Long ago, Taku Island was built as a place where nations could settle disputes without starting wars."

"The arena there has existed for hundreds of years."

"It has witnessed countless battles."

"Some peaceful."

"Some..."

He paused.

"Not so peaceful."

The recruits listened carefully.

"Tomorrow morning, we begin preparing."

"After the month is complete..."

"We leave by ship."

The field erupted into conversation.

A month.

That was all they had.

A month before they stood in front of the world.

A month before they met the Iron Dominion.

A month before Kaien faced the nation connected to his greatest pain.

Later that evening...

Dormitory 214 was quieter than usual.

The excitement from earlier had faded.

Now everyone was thinking.

Jared sat on his bed, staring at the ceiling.

"So..."

"We're actually doing this."

Leon cleaned his weapon.

"Looks like it."

Riven looked toward Kaien.

"You okay?"

Kaien sat near the window again.

Watching the night sky.

"Yeah."

Riven narrowed his eyes.

"You always say that."

Kaien smiled slightly.

"Because usually I am."

Seraphina walked over and sat beside him.

"You know everyone noticed."

Kaien looked at her.

"Noticed what?"

"The way you changed when Owen mentioned the Iron Dominion."

The room became quiet.

Kaien looked away.

"I didn't."

"You did."

Seraphina's voice wasn't accusing.

Just honest.

"You looked like you wanted to destroy something."

Kaien remained silent.

Because she wasn't wrong.

Seeing their name.

Hearing their nation.

It brought back memories.

Fire.

Smoke.

His mother's final moments.

The ruins of Veyral Village.

The feeling of being powerless.

Riven spoke quietly.

"Kaien."

"We know what happened."

"But don't let them control you."

Kaien looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

"Your anger."

Riven closed his book.

"If the Iron Dominion can make you lose control..."

"Then they already won."

Those words stayed with Kaien.

For a moment...

Nobody spoke.

Then Jared broke the silence.

"Okay."

Everyone looked at him.

"Enough serious stuff."

He pointed at Kaien.

"You are officially a tournament fighter now."

Kaien blinked.

"Okay?"

"That means we need to train you."

Leon raised an eyebrow.

"Train him?"

"Yes."

Jared nodded.

"Because apparently having an army of shadows isn't enough."

Kaien almost smiled.

Seraphina laughed.

"You know..."

"He actually has a point."

Kaien looked confused.

"You too?"

"Your Echo is powerful."

She looked toward him.

"But your biggest weakness is still yourself."

Kaien didn't answer.

Because he knew.

Umbra wasn't the dangerous part.

The dangerous part was what happened when his emotions controlled it.

The Crimson Iris.

The unknown shadow.

The power he didn't understand.

A month of training would not just be about becoming stronger.

It would be about control.

Meanwhile...

Far across the ocean...

Inside the Iron Dominion headquarters...

A similar meeting was taking place.

Three young fighters stood before a commander.

Victor Kane.

Cassia Thorn.

Damien Ashcroft.

The chosen representatives.

A general looked at them.

"You understand your mission?"

Victor crossed his arms.

"Win."

Cassia smiled.

"Obviously."

Damien remained silent.

The commander continued.

"This tournament is not only about victory."

"It is about showing the world the strength of the Iron Dominion."

His eyes narrowed.

"And one more thing."

The three looked at him.

"Kaien Voss."

The atmosphere changed.

Victor smiled.

"The shadow user?"

Cassia laughed softly.

"I heard he thinks he's some kind of chosen hero."

Damien said nothing.

The commander looked at them.

"Do not underestimate him."

Victor frowned.

"Because of Umbra?"

"No."

The commander answered.

"Because of his mind."

The three became quiet.

"He adapts quickly."

"He learns during battle."

"And he has something most powerful fighters lack."

"What?"

The commander stared out the window.

"A reason."

One month.

Thirty days.

The countdown had begun.

The academy would become a battlefield.

Friendships would be tested.

Rivals would appear.

Secrets would be revealed.

And on Taku Island...

Five nations would gather.

Some seeking victory.

Some seeking recognition.

Some seeking revenge.

And one boy carrying the power of shadows...

Would step onto the stage where the entire world would finally see him.

Not as a survivor.

Not as a weapon.

But as Kaien Voss.

The announcement changed everything.

For the first time in academy history...

The recruits weren't training just to survive.

They were training to represent their nation.

And only three names would carry the hopes of the Allied Coalition.

Kaien Voss.

Seraphina Ashvale.

Kyle Mercer.

Three completely different fighters.

Three completely different Echoes.

And three completely different reasons for wanting victory.

Day One

The morning after the announcement, Instructor Owen brought the three representatives to the training grounds.

The field was empty.

Only them.

No audience.

No other recruits.

Just three fighters preparing for the biggest battle of their lives.

Owen looked at them.

"You have thirty days."

"Thirty days to improve."

"Thirty days to understand your weaknesses."

"Thirty days before you stand against the strongest Echo users from five nations."

Kyle crossed his arms.

"I'll be ready."

Seraphina smiled.

"You always say that."

Kyle looked at her.

"Because it's true."

Kaien stayed quiet.

Owen noticed.

"Kaien."

Kaien looked up.

"Your biggest challenge won't be the opponents."

"It will be yourself."

Kaien understood immediately.

Umbra.

The Crimson Iris.

The unknown shadow inside his Echo.

The things he still couldn't control.

Owen continued.

"Power you cannot control is just another enemy."

Kaien nodded.

"I know."

Day Three

The first training session was simple.

No Echoes.

Only combat.

Kyle immediately challenged Kaien.

Everyone expected it.

Even Owen.

Kyle stepped forward.

"I want to fight him."

Seraphina looked at him.

"Already?"

Kyle stared at Kaien.

"I need to know something."

Kaien tilted his head.

"What?"

Kyle's expression hardened.

"Are you actually strong..."

"Or are you only dangerous because Umbra chose you?"

The words were harsh.

But Kaien didn't get angry.

Instead, he looked at Kyle.

"Why do you care?"

Kyle clenched his fist.

"Because everyone keeps looking at you."

"Everyone keeps saying you're special."

"The Shadow Chosen."

"The strongest Echo."

"The future of this generation."

He stepped closer.

"But nobody asks if you actually deserve it."

The air became tense.

Seraphina frowned.

"Kyle..."

But Kaien raised his hand.

"It's okay."

He looked at Kyle.

"Then prove it."

Kyle smiled.

"Gladly."

The fight began.

Kyle activated his Echo.

Iron Pulse.

His body strengthened.

His muscles tightened.

His movements became faster.

He charged.

Kaien didn't summon Umbra.

He dodged.

Kyle swung again.

Kaien blocked.

The impact pushed him backward.

Kyle smiled.

"You're holding back."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I don't need Umbra to fight you."

That answer annoyed Kyle.

He attacked harder.

Punches.

Kicks.

Heavy strikes.

Every attack carried enough force to break stone.

But Kaien wasn't fighting like before.

He wasn't relying on shadows.

He was using the academy training.

Footwork.

Timing.

Reading his opponent.

Kyle realized something.

Kaien wasn't just powerful.

He was skilled.

The battle ended with both exhausted.

No winner.

Kyle looked frustrated.

Kaien looked impressed.

"You're strong."

Kyle looked away.

"Not enough."

Day Seven

Seraphina's training began.

Owen wanted her to fully understand her Echo.

"You still think of your ability as teleportation."

Seraphina tilted her head.

"Isn't that what it is?"

"No."

Owen shook his head.

"Teleportation is movement."

"Your ability is connection."

Seraphina became quiet.

Connection.

That word stuck with her.

Owen continued.

"You don't move because you want to escape."

"You move because you refuse to be trapped."

She closed her eyes.

Thinking.

About home.

About the people she cared about.

About the moments she wished she could return to.

Then...

She disappeared.

Kaien and Kyle watched in surprise.

A second later...

She appeared behind them.

Kyle jumped.

"That's dangerous."

Seraphina laughed.

"Sorry."

Owen smiled.

"You're getting closer."

Over the next few days...

Seraphina pushed her Echo further.

She learned she could swap with:

Objects.

Places she remembered.

People she had a connection with.

But there was a limitation.

The stronger the connection...

The easier the movement.

The weaker the connection...

The more energy it required.

Owen warned her.

"Do not forget."

"Every Echo has a price."

Seraphina nodded.

Day Fifteen

Kaien's training began.

And it was different.

Because Kaien wasn't learning new abilities.

He was learning control.

Owen ordered him not to summon soldiers.

Instead...

"One shadow."

Kaien looked confused.

"One?"

"Yes."

"Anyone can control an army when they are overwhelmed."

"But can you control one?"

Kaien closed his eyes.

A single shadow appeared.

It moved perfectly.

No explosion.

No pressure.

No anger.

Just obedience.

Owen nodded.

"Again."

Another.

Then another.

Slowly...

Kaien learned precision.

Not destruction.

Control.

But the Crimson Iris remained a problem.

Every time Kaien pushed himself...

The eye appeared.

The symbols moved.

The pain returned.

Blood flowed.

And every time...

Kaien stopped.

Because he was afraid.

Not of dying.

Of losing control.

One night...

Seraphina found him training alone.

"You were worried."

Kaien looked away.

"I'm fine."

She smiled.

"You always say that."

He stayed silent.

After a moment, she asked:

"What are you afraid of?"

Kaien didn't answer immediately.

Then...

"I don't know what happens if I stop controlling it."

Seraphina looked at him.

"Kaien."

"You aren't your power."

He looked at her.

"Umbra chose you."

"But you choose what Umbra becomes."

Those words stayed with him.

Day Twenty

The three fighters started training together.

And slowly...

They became a team.

Kyle learned how to fight alongside Seraphina.

Instead of charging forward, he protected openings she created.

Seraphina learned how to use her movement ability offensively.

She would swap Kaien into perfect positions for attacks.

Kaien learned how to support them instead of fighting alone.

For the first time...

He wasn't carrying everything himself.

Day Twenty-Five

The academy received reports.

The other nations were ready.

The Kingdom of Aster had powerful fighters.

The Republic of Velmora had brilliant strategists.

The Frost Dominion remained mysterious.

And the Iron Dominion...

Had everyone nervous.

Especially one name.

Damien Ashcroft.

Nobody knew his Echo.

Nobody knew his fighting style.

Only one rumor existed.

He had defeated an entire squad alone.

Kyle looked at the report.

"We need to beat them."

Seraphina looked at him.

"Why?"

Kyle answered immediately.

"Because they think they're the strongest."

Kaien looked at the Iron Dominion symbol.

For a moment...

His eyes darkened.

Seraphina noticed.

But said nothing.

Day Thirty

The final day arrived.

Thirty days ago...

They were three talented fighters.

Now...

They were something different.

Kyle stepped forward.

"I'm going to win."

Seraphina smiled.

"You say that every day."

"Because every day it's true."

Kaien looked at both of them.

"We're ready."

Owen nodded.

"I agree."

Then he became serious.

"But remember."

"The tournament isn't about proving who is strongest."

"It's about proving who you are."
