Caius was more than satisfied with the power of Divine Flame. It made him look forward to the future even more.
Every time he thought about the monsters from the original story, those mighty figures who stood at the peak of the sea, the blood in his body felt like it had been set alight. For a while, he could not make it settle.
He only snapped back to reality when the pirates outside kicked the door open.
Bang!
The door was kicked off its frame. Five or six pirates rushed into the room, and when they spotted Caius, cruel smiles spread across their faces.
"Captain was right. We still had one fish slip through the net."
"Yeah. Bad luck, kid. You ran into us. Try to reincarnate better next time."
As soon as they finished speaking, they walked toward Caius. The long blades in their hands rose high, then hacked down.
The pirates behind them cackled, already waiting for the end.
Thud.
They saw the last thing they would ever see.
The impossibly handsome man in front of them had stopped the blade with nothing but his palm. The smile on his face seemed familiar, somehow.
They did not get the chance to remember where they had seen it.
Caius snatched the long blade away and moved. In a single instant, every pirate in the room was cut down, their bodies split cleanly apart.
"Hah..."
"That felt good."
He laughed, low at first, then louder.
"Hahahahaha!"
Once the room was cleared, Caius did not stop. He stepped outside, and the world beyond the door opened in front of him.
A pirate ship sat on the sea not far away. Dozens of pirates stood aboard it, weapons raised, faces twisted with greed and ugly laughter as they looked toward the town.
When they realized the person walking out of the house was not one of their own, they froze for a moment. The surprise lasted only a heartbeat before savagery returned to their faces.
"Jihahahaha! Looks like this last brat is a little tougher than expected."
"Captain, those useless idiots could not handle him. Let us do it!"
"Yeah, Captain. I love watching people look scared. Nothing feels better than that."
"Nathan, you really are never fixing that sick habit."
"Why not leave this pretty little thing to me?"
"I like soft-faced boys the most. Jihahahahaha!"
The pirate who said that looked almost feminine, and he was clearly the captain of this crew. He stared at Caius with a filthy look in his eyes, a thread of drool gathering at the corner of his mouth.
"Now let Gunter Pierce take good care of you."
He lifted his personal blade, leapt from the ship, and used the momentum to charge straight at Caius.
"Go, Captain! We believe in you!"
"Just do not forget to let us have some fun after you are done!"
"Hahahahahaha!"
Caius stood where he was and lowered his head, trying to hide the rising curve of his mouth and the growing madness in his eyes.
He waited until Gunter Pierce reached him.
Shing.
Thud. Thud.
Two halves of a body hit the ground.
Fresh blood filled the air, and for some reason, Caius found the scent almost comforting.
"No way... He cut the captain in half with one strike!"
"Who is he? How could someone this strong be in a place like this?"
"He is looking over here. Run! Hurry, before it is too late!"
Chaos erupted across the ship. Dozens of pirates scrambled over one another in a desperate rush to escape, so frantic that some of them trampled their own crewmates.
At some point, Caius had already appeared aboard the ship. He looked down at the pirate beneath his foot.
"You ants."
"I gave you a chance, and you still could not use it."
"In that case, die."
Blood splashed across the deck.
The pirates, still trapped in panic, went still.
The fear remained on their faces, but now it was joined by the madness of men who realized they could not escape.
"Damn brat. If you are going to kill us all, then do not blame us for fighting with everything we have!"
"Everyone, kill him! No matter how strong he is, he has to run out of strength eventually!"
"Right! What kind of strong fighter could a tiny place like this have? The real monsters are already out at sea. He must be bluffing!"
"All together! Kill him!"
Once one pirate stepped forward, the rest followed. Their faces twisted with fear and frenzy as they rushed at Caius, ready to tear him apart and crush the terror in their hearts.
In the New World, especially in this era, the sea never lacked mad pirates like them.
The Rocks Pirates had not yet been founded, but the shape of the age had never really changed.
When people faced death and had nowhere left to run, they became vicious.
Unfortunately for them, they had completely misjudged Caius's strength. He had only just received the system's rewards, but he was already far beyond the reach of insects like these.
"Hahahahahaha!"
"Good. Come on, all of you."
"Let me enjoy this slaughter."
He threw away the long blade, as if it had become a burden. Golden fire rose around him, and the corner of his mouth lifted.
"Divine Flame."
The golden blaze around him seemed to receive a command. It turned into a roaring river and crashed forward, sweeping through the pirates who did not know when to stop.
Faced with power that seemed almost divine, they showed despair and regret.
Perhaps running earlier had been the right choice.
Unfortunately, there was no second chance.
The flames swallowed them all in an instant.
When everything was over, Caius drew the fire back into himself and returned to shore. He stood there, staring at the distant horizon in silence.
'Something was wrong with me just now.'
'I was an ordinary man before I came here. How did I face all that without panicking?'
'Is that my real nature?'
'If it is...'
'That is perfect.'
"Jihahahahaha!"
On the empty shore, madness twisted across the man's face.
A long while passed before Caius finally understood the shape of his own emotions. Then he turned and walked toward the town behind him.
He passed corpse after corpse along the road, his gaze sweeping over them with cold indifference.
He kept walking until he saw a survivor.
Only then did something gentle return to his face.
He approached at an unhurried pace.
It was a little girl. She was carefully searching for food, terrified of making any sound that might draw the pirates still inside the town.
"Hey, little one. Are you by yourself?"
"Where are your parents?"
The girl's body jerked at the sound of his voice. She tried to run, but fear and hunger had made her legs too weak. After struggling for a moment, she closed her eyes as if accepting death.
Death did not come.
Instead, a warm hand rested on her head and gently stroked her hair.
She opened her eyes and saw a very handsome older brother looking down at her. Little by little, she relaxed.
"B-Big brother... My father is sick, and my mother has to take care of him, so I came out to find food."
"What about you? Why are you here?"
"There are a lot of bad people here right now. They kill people. We should leave."
Caius smiled gently.
"It is all right. Big brother already dealt with those damned pirates. There is no danger anymore."
"Relax. You can bring your parents out now."
