"Quentin Lance?"
Damon recognized the middle-aged police officer chasing the thief and was a little surprised.
Was that not Laurel's father?
The distance between the two men was growing wider. The thief was getting closer to Damon, who happened to be blocking the way. Damon stepped back and let the path open.
Seeing that, the thief looked smug and arrogant.
Quentin Lance's face filled with frustration.
This was Starling City.
Not one citizen was willing to help the police.
The thief ran over fast. As he moved, he even spared Damon a glance, his expression saying Damon had made the smart choice.
Damon smiled back and slid his left foot forward.
The running thief pitched forward and flew.
He hit face-first and skidded a long way before finally stopping.
The street went silent.
No one had expected the smiling young man to do that.
Quentin froze for a second, then hurried over, pinned the thief's arm, and cuffed him.
"Thank you for the help," he said to Damon.
"Happy to."
Damon smiled brightly as Quentin hauled the thief up, face smeared with blood.
That was what people called braking with your face.
While they were talking, a breathless woman in business clothes ran up from behind them.
The moment she arrived, she thanked Quentin repeatedly.
"Thank you. Thank you so much. There is an important legal document in that bag. If I lost it, things would get very complicated."
"Thank him," Quentin said, handing the bag back while glancing around. "If he had not helped, you probably would not have gotten it back."
The surrounding pedestrians lowered their heads and hurried away as if nothing had happened.
"Thank you very much."
The woman in business clothes took a card from her bag and handed it to Damon with both hands.
"My name is Anna Loring. I'm an attorney. If there is ever anything I can help you with, call me."
"Sure."
Damon took the card casually, then turned to Quentin.
"Could I borrow your phone? I was supposed to meet someone, but now..."
"Of course."
Quentin handed it over readily.
Damon thanked him with a smile, turned slightly away, and dialed Laurel's number.
After a few rings, Laurel's puzzled voice came through.
"Dad? What's wrong?"
"We agreed to meet today. You did not forget, did you?" Damon asked lightly.
"It's you. How do you have my dad's phone? What did you do to him? I already agreed to your condition, so why..."
Laurel recognized Damon's voice. After his threat yesterday, hearing him call from her father's phone made panic hit her at once.
"Dear, do not be angry yet. Let's talk in person, all right? Same place. I should be there in about half an hour."
Damon ended the call in a gentle voice and handed the phone back to Quentin.
"Thank you."
"Like you said, happy to help."
Quentin smiled as he took the phone back, unaware that his tiny favor had frightened his daughter half to death.
"Am I free to go?" Damon asked.
"Of course."
Damon smiled politely at Quentin and Anna Loring, then left.
Twenty minutes later, in front of the Queen factory, Laurel, anxious and pale, rushed over the moment she saw Damon appear.
"What did you do to my father?"
Damon chuckled.
"I happened to run into your father and helped him catch a purse snatcher. Then I borrowed his phone to contact you. That is all."
"Really?" Laurel sounded doubtful.
"Call him and find out."
Laurel hesitated, then took out her phone and called.
A few seconds later, busy noise came through the line.
"Something wrong? I'm busy over here."
"No. Nothing."
"Then I'll hang up."
Quentin ended the call before Laurel could say anything else.
Just as he was about to put the phone away, Quentin checked his call history on instinct.
No unknown numbers.
The most recent outgoing call was to his daughter.
"Did he delete it after calling?"
Quentin muttered, then thought nothing more of it. He put the phone away and went back to work.
"Next time, do not be this stupid."
Damon looked at Laurel as she relaxed and put away her phone.
"If a villain calls you from someone's phone, confirm the situation first. Do not rush over like an idiot."
Watching her, Damon felt that if someone sent Laurel a message saying, "This is Damon Keller. Send money," she might actually do it.
'Who knows what you might do?'
Laurel muttered resentfully in her heart.
"Did you bring money?" Damon asked suddenly.
"Y-yes."
"Then come with me."
Damon patted her shoulder and led the way.
After walking for a little over ten minutes, Damon brought her to the entrance of a motel.
"Why are we here?" Laurel asked, wary and confused.
"To get a room. Unless you want to do this outside. I do not mind if you don't."
