The primary core burned like a captured star.
It hovered in the center of the living storm, a basketball-sized sphere of white-hot singularity humming with terrifying magnetic power.
Every high-frequency vibration felt like a heavy hammer striking Kazuma's exposed nerves.
Around him, the internal walls of the Shiver-Colossus were violently collapsing, silver needles writhing like dying serpents as energy bled out into the surrounding air.
Kazuma stood wedged between two glowing structural struts, his leather boots melting against the superheated metal.
His left arm hung useless at his side, charred, broken, and completely dead to sensation.
His right hand tightened around the leather-wrapped grip of his carbon-steel katana.
The cobalt gravity stone set into the guard throbbed with every pulse of his failing heart, fully saturated with stored kinetic force.
"This is it," Kazuma whispered, his voice eaten instantly by the screaming magnetic tempest.
No more running through dark sewers.
No more dodging needle-hounds in narrow Shibuya alleyways.
No more watching the city crumble brick by brick into fine gray sand.
Three years of hunting shadows.
Three years of carrying Yumi's ghost in every quiet corner of this city.
It all comes down to a single inch of steel.
The core flared violently, sensing the mortal parasite wedged deep within its vascular gut.
A wave of sheer, unrefined gravity rippled outward from the singularity, trying to crush Kazuma’s ribs into splinters.
Kazuma bent his knees, anchoring his heels deeper into the melting struts.
Blood welled from his mouth, spilling over his chin and vaporizing instantly against his kinetic aura.
He ignored the blinding agony tearing through his shattered left shoulder. He ignored the red haze narrowing his vision to a dark pinprick.
You took everything from this city, Kazuma thought, drawing the katana back until the tip pointed directly at the heart of the glowing star.
You took the rain.
You took the neon.
You took her voice.
Now give it all back.
With a guttural roar that tore through his blood-soaked throat, Kazuma thrust the blade forward with every ounce of strength left in his fading body.
STRIKE
The carbon-steel tip pierced the outer event horizon of the magnetic singularity.
For a fraction of a second, the universe seemed to stop moving.
The howling storm inside the titan froze into absolute, terrifying stillness.
Then Kazuma released the entire kinetic charge stored within the cobalt gravity stone.
BOOM!
A massive shockwave of pure force detonated deep inside the singularity, shattering its delicate magnetic balance.
White light exploded from the point of contact, blinding, pure, and absolute.
The singularity didn't just rupture; it imploded, sucking the surrounding vascular conduits and liquid mercury into its hungry center before detonating outward in a violent supernova of raw magic.
The Shiver-Colossus shrieked; a high-frequency death rattle that shattered every remaining glass panel within a ten-mile radius across Tokyo.
Its colossal living structure began to violently unravel from the inside out.
Trillions of vibrating silver needles lost their magnetic alignment, dissolving like salt tossed into boiling water.
Kazuma felt the metal struts beneath his boots disintegrate into weightless ash.
Gravity inverted, flinging his battered body into open space as the mountain-sized leviathan burst into a fountain of blinding silver embers.
He was falling.
Free-falling through a sky made of burning stardust, shattered magic, and tearing clouds.
Below him, the ruined landscape of Shibuya rushed upward to meet him at terrifying speed.
The Ley Line Spire was glowing softly below, its deep violet light stabilizing as the parasitic draw of the monster vanished completely.
Kazuma tilted his body in mid-air, forcing his burning eyes to stay open against the rushing wind.
One last trick, he thought, his conscious mind slipping away like sand through open fingers.
Just enough gravity magic to survive the impact.
Just... a tiny spark.
Come on, blade. Give me one last favor.
He channeled the pathetic residue of energy left in his boots, creating a localized gravity cushion beneath him twenty feet above the ruined asphalt.
CRASH!!
He slammed into the cracked pavement of Shibuya Crossing, rolling across the glass-strewn rubble before skidding to a halt near the base of the shattered Hachiko statue.
The brutal impact rattled his bones, knocking the last breath of air from his lungs.
He lay flat on his back, staring up at the vault of the sky.
Above him, the Shiver-Colossus was gone.
In its place, a gentle rain of silver dust sifted down through the atmosphere, glowing like harmless fireflies against the twilight.
The suffocating dome of static mist peeled away, revealing real, dark storm clouds rolling over the Tokyo skyline.
Then came the sound.
It started as a low, distant rumble of thunder echoing across Tokyo Bay.
Then came the wind, whistling through the hollow shells of broken skyscrapers.
Then came the rain; cool, heavy drops splashing against Kazuma's bloodstained face and burned lips.
In the distance, emergency sirens began to wail, their rhythmic tones cutting through the cool night air.
Voices drifted through the alleyways; cries of relief, shouts of survivors coming out from underground shelters, the hum of returning electrical grids.
The deafening silence that had choked Tokyo for days was finally broken.
Kazuma let out a long, ragged breath, watching his misted exhalation rise into the cold rain.
Beside him, his carbon-steel katana lay embedded in the cracked concrete, its gravity stone dark and drained, but its blade unbroken.
He couldn't lift his arm.
He couldn't feel his legs.
His body felt completely hollowed out by pain, blood loss, and utter exhaustion.
Yet, for the first time in three long years, the heavy, suffocating knot in his chest felt lighter.
We did it, Yumi, he thought, letting his eyelids flutter shut as the soothing rain washed the silver ash from his skin.
The sky is clear again.
The city is breathing.
Your sacrifice wasn't in vain.
In the distance, footsteps sounded against the wet pavement; rapid, synchronized, heavy tactical boots.
Red defensive flares ignited in the gloom as a Vanguard SSD medical retrieval squad rounded the corner of the ruined department store.
"Investigator on the ground!" a voice shouted over a crackling radio, clear and loud through the falling rain. "We found Kazuma! Medical team, move in!"
Kazuma didn't open his eyes, but a faint, tired smile touched his lips.
High above Shibuya Crossing, the giant neon screens on the surrounding towers flickered once, twice, and then roared back to vibrant, buzzing life, illuminating the dark street in brilliant shades of electric blue and neon magenta.
The city was noise.
The city was light.
The city was alive.
Kazuma closed his eyes and finally let the darkness take him, knowing that when he woke up, Tokyo would still be standing.
His war was over.
